1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction
Mecorr Petroleum Services Co. has been requested by Capital Gas Co. to provide
cathodic protection system for carbon steel gas pipeline from El Hamed station to
gas plant at Ras-Ghareb. The Cathodic Protection scope includes, Pre-Design
Survey, Design, Supply of Cathodic Protection Materials, installation and Testing &
Commissioning.
The Cathodic protection scope includes permanent CP system for Gas Pipeline.
This document details the design concept and theory of permanent CP system
(ICCP) for carbon steel gas pipeline from El Hamed field to gas Plant in Ras-Ghareb,
which are supported by full calculations, specifications, and bill of materials.

3. DESIGN APPROACH
The proposed Gas transmission line is 0.219 m diameter and 14200 m long will be
permanently protected by ICCP system.
One new cathodic protection station will be proposed for the protection of gas
transmission line. The CP station will be installed at Gharib block station at the end
of the pipeline.

3.2. Protective Criteria:
Underground pipeline:
Coating: Epoxy coated with polyurethane wrapping
Current density: 0.8 mA/m2 ISO -15589-1
Safety factor: 25%
Final current density: 0.8 x1.25 = 1 mA/m2

The design calculations are based on using one dedicated Impressed Current
Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system for pipeline external surface. Cathodic protection
system is comprised of the following principle components:
The pipeline will be protected by an ICCP system using mixed metal oxide titanium
anodes (MMO), which will be installed in shallow horizontal groundbed 1.5 m depth,
50~70 m away from pipeline and the spacing between each anode shall be 1.5 m,
each anode will be surrounded by carbonaceous backfill.
All anode feeder cables (16 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC) shall be terminated in 10-Terminal
anode junction box, where they will be connected to a main positive cable (25 mm2
Cu/XLPE/PVC) coming from the positive pole of transformer rectifier.
Pipeline shall be connected to the negative cable (25 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC), which
will be welded to the pipeline surface through thermite welding from one end and
the other end will be connected to the negative terminal of the TRU.
Test station will be installed each 2 km along the pipeline route to monitor the
cathodic protection potential, it consists of measuring cable (4 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC)
tail terminated at test station & connected to pipeline surface by means of thermite
welding, which is used to measure the pipeline potential with help of portable
reference electrode.
4. MATERIAL SELECTION
Transformer Rectifier (TR) will be conventional type, air cooled, rated for non-
hazardous area, with input single phase 220 V a frequency of 50 Hz, outdoor type
with DC output of 30V/25A for external ICCP system. Transformer rectifier will be
installed on a concrete pad suitably done on site.

4.2. Anodes:
ICCP system anodes will be of MMO anodes, complete with 16 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC
cable.
4.3. Cables:
Carbonaceous backfill will be used to lower the total resistance of the anode ground
bed, to improve current distribution and extend anode life.
Test Stations shall be 2 terminals Big Fink type c/w, 3” PVC conduit.
E06 Cable Resistance Per Meter Run Rcable = Lcable x rcable size
Soil resistivity data was provided for the covered structure & data collected is based
on tests performed using Wenner Four-Electrode method in groundbed proposed
location.

section of pipelines.

Type (m) (m) (m²) (mA/m²) Required (A)
Gas pipeline needs a total current of 9.7 A which will be discharged by One CP
station installed at Gharib Gas Plant.
The following table reflects the actual & proposed number anodes required for
protection of buired section of pipelines.
Note: Number of anodes by weight calculation is not applicable for MMO anodes.
Although the Minimum resulted number of MMO anodes is 1.5, Eight (8) anodes
will be used to provide protection for more than 25 year life time, and to lower the
circuit resistance, ensure better current distribution and to make current capacity
equal to or more than TRU rating.
Each anode cable will be terminated at anode junction box, where main positive
cable coming from TRU will be connected to them.
The typical specific coating resistence value (r’c) for new coating with a good quality
is 2 x103 Ω-M2 @ 1000 Ω-CM soil resestivity (reference NACE CP4 Manual)

The required transformer rectifier capacity with spare capacity as per above table is
30V – 25A.
6. INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
6.1. General:
The Cathodic protection systems will be carried out according to client standard and
specifications, and the Project drawings and specifications.
Before commencing installation, these guidelines in conjunction with all relevant
project drawings and documentation should be reviewed and understood.
The pipeline shall be electrically isolated from any other metallic structure at both
ends
The proposed anode bed locations at Ras-Gharib gas plant, where electric power
source will be available for the transformer rectifier have to be approved by client.
Horizontal anode bed installation shall be performed as per the attached design
drawings. Anode shall be handled with a great care.
All cable connections to pipeline casing shall be provided by thermite welding, and
coating shall be repaired using the Epoxy.
The installation works shall always be carried out within an appropriate quality
control system.
All materials associated with the installation works will be considered as fragile and
will be treated accordingly.
All cables will be handled and stored to avoid damage to the installation.
