3. DESIGN APPROACH

3.1. Design Basis:

The proposed Gas transmission line is 0.219 m diameter and 14200 m long will be
permanently protected by ICCP system.

One new cathodic protection station will be proposed for the protection of gas
transmission line. The CP station will be installed at Gharib block station at the end
of the pipeline.

Proposed ICCP system summary is given in below table.

3.2. Protective Criteria:

The National Association of Corrosion Engineer (NACE) SP0169 state that

adequate cathodic protection will be achieved if the following terms were fulfilled:
“ A negative polarized potential of at least 850 mV relative to a saturated

copper/copper sulfate reference electrode”

Or:
“A minimum of 100 mV of cathodic polarization between the structure surface and

a stable reference electrode contacting the electrolyte. The formation or decay of

Corrosion control can be achieved at various levels of cathodic polarization
depending on the environmental conditions.

3.3. Coating & Current Density:

Underground pipeline:
Coating: Epoxy coated with polyurethane wrapping
Current density: 0.8 mA/m2 ISO -15589-1
Safety factor: 25%
Final current density: 0.8 x1.25 = 1 mA/m2

3.4. Design life:

As per project specification, the design life time should be 25 years.

3.5. CP System Description:

The design calculations are based on using one dedicated Impressed Current
Cathodic Protection (ICCP) system for pipeline external surface. Cathodic protection
system is comprised of the following principle components:

The pipeline will be protected by an ICCP system using mixed metal oxide titanium
anodes (MMO), which will be installed in shallow horizontal groundbed 1.5 m depth,
50~70 m away from pipeline and the spacing between each anode shall be 1.5 m,
each anode will be surrounded by carbonaceous backfill.

All anode feeder cables (16 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC) shall be terminated in 10-Terminal
anode junction box, where they will be connected to a main positive cable (25 mm2
Cu/XLPE/PVC) coming from the positive pole of transformer rectifier.

Pipeline shall be connected to the negative cable (25 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC), which
will be welded to the pipeline surface through thermite welding from one end and
the other end will be connected to the negative terminal of the TRU.

Test station will be installed each 2 km along the pipeline route to monitor the
cathodic protection potential, it consists of measuring cable (4 mm2 Cu/XLPE/PVC)
tail terminated at test station & connected to pipeline surface by means of thermite
welding, which is used to measure the pipeline potential with help of portable
reference electrode.

4. MATERIAL SELECTION

hazardous area, with input single phase 220 V a frequency of 50 Hz, outdoor type
with DC output of 30V/25A for external ICCP system. Transformer rectifier will be
installed on a concrete pad suitably done on site.
