Post Philosophy Statement
This has been the most valuable class I have been taking since I switched my

major. When it comes to special education, this is the most informational class

that everyone should take. I believe that this class should be taught in other

degree classes as well because it would give a better understanding of why

people act and react to things differently than others. In my “Pre-Personal

Philosophy” statement I wrote that even though I can recognize disabled people,

I do not have the knowledge to properly handle a situation when it comes to

disabled people. Now that I have finished this course, I feel that I gained a lot of

understanding on how to approach each situation and what the proper way is to

handle each situation should the need rise. Prior to this class I had no clue about

the different types of assistive technology that are available for students with

special needs. After finishing the course, I can easily identify the available

technology for each disability.

The purpose of special education in our society in my opinion is to accommodate

the educational needs of those who are challenged in some areas. Some of the

areas could be a learning disability where a student would need more time

understanding the lesson than a “regular” student. Other areas of challenge

could be a physical disability in which case the student would need external help

to complete tasks. Some disabilities require assistive technology to write or to

speak. Whatever the case might be, educators should be equipped with all

necessary tools, technology and knowledge to handle each situation accordingly.

Each situation is unique based on the student’s disability and personality. The

role of the special education teacher in the classroom is to recognize the

student’s ability or disability and to come up with the Individualized Education

Plan to suit the student’s needs.

I believe that students with special needs learn best if they have the right tool

and assistance from their teacher and their peers. Since every disability is

different each student would learn best with different method. Some students

learn best with visual help; others are best when they repeat the lessons.

My goals for students with special education needs are to make them feel that

they fit in the classroom. I want to create a classroom environment where special

education needs children can feel equal.

A special education teacher should have the qualities to recognize the type of

need the student have, to provide lessons to them that is easy to understand and

easy to follow. Most importantly, a good special education teacher should look at

each student as equals this way special education students will feel comfortable

in a “normal” setting.

I do believe that all students can learn. We learned about different disabilities,

assistive technology and different technique a student can learn with. The most

important thing is for the need to be recognized and addressed accordingly.

In my opinion what teachers owe to special education needs students is to treat

them just like they treat a student who does not have a special need. Teachers

can create a classroom where all students feel equal and unique their own way.
