Students rock Carnaval Cohen steps down

DePaul students experienced the
glittered-masks, parades, and Corona
floats at this years’ Carnaval in Mérida,
Mexico.
“Carnaval was a little cheesy and way
too commercial. Almost every float was a
beer commercial” said senior Joel Lydic,
a Spanish and French Major.
“It is like the commercial ball of
consumerism in Mexico. Coca cola and
Corona have taken over this time honored
tradition,” said senior Bianca Jyanti, a
Public Relations and Advertising major.
Mérida’s Carnaval is one of the 12
principal Carnavals in all of Latin
America. From Feb. 10 to Feb. 17,
parades and dances cover the city in
celebration. Each day a parade went from
the North part of Mérida to the center.
“Even if it’s losing substance, it’s still
tradition to many people,” said junior
Leah Jeedas, a sociology major.
The fourth night consisted of a parade
to honor the traditional folk dance of the
Yucatan. People from the community
dance in the parade to celebrate their
heritage. Within this parade, between
every group of dancers was a beer float.

“It was weird to see traditional folk
dance outfits and then a girl practically
naked dancing on top of a beer float,”
Jeedas said. “I’m not sure how traditional
that truly is.”
“Carnaval is traditionally a party that
is now full of sex,” said Omar Teyer, 26,
who lives in Mérida. “This is not good for
children who are in the parade.”
Several students took kids from a soccer
team they are coaching in Mérida to the
parade of traditional folk dance. The
children range from ages 6 to 12 years
old.
“Most of the kids their age have been
exposed to this type of sexuality. They
seemed excited, but used to it,” said
junior Jeff Lydic, a geography major.
“Sex sells, but in a morbid way,” Teyer
said. Carnaval has always centered
around sex and beer for as long as he can
remember, Teyer said.
DePaul students dressed up in different
outfits to celebrate on the third night.
“It was an extremely fun experience that
I will remember forever,” Jeedas said.
“But between the blasting Lady Gaga and
the naked girls on beer floats, it definitely
is a wakeup call to how commercialized
many parts of the world are becoming.”

Embattled Lieutenant Governor Candidate Scott
Lee Cohen has officially withdrawn his name from
the November ballot.
It has been a tumultuous two plus weeks for Cohen
since accepting the party nomination on February 3.
First, it was revealed that he had a domestic battery
charge against him in 2005 that claimed he had held
a knife to the neck of his then 24-year-old girlfriend
(which he divulged information in a March 2009
interview with the Sun-Times).
It was then discovered that this ex-girlfriend, whom
he had met a massage parlor, had a prostitution charge
in her past.
On the same evening, word began surfacing that
Cohen also has a history of federal tax problems
stemming from non-payment of back taxes.
Later Thursday, Cohen’s divorce papers from
his ex-wife Debbie Cohen York became public.
In the papers, York claimed life with Cohen was
“unbearable” and that she lived “in constant fear of
him.”
The divorce papers also claimed that Cohen had
been injecting anabolic steroids, a claim he has since
verified.
Once considered a long shot, Cohen poured $2.3
million of his own money into his campaign and
blanketed the state with advertising while opening a
job opportunity center in his campaign office as well
as arranging multiple job fairs.
Political Sciences Professor Zachary Cook believes
the ordeal isn’t indicative of any thing larger; noting
that the lieutenant gubernatorial position is “lower
profile” and the outcome was a “function of publicity”.
He continued, “We had a, hopefully, unusual set
of circumstances with the Democratic Party, the
candidates themselves, and media collectively
dropping the ball.”
Chair of the Political Science Department, Wayne
Steger agrees. He sees the allowance of such an
unsavory character to reach nomination status as
“complacency on the part of the voters and media”.
The “long odds” of Cohen’s chances made it easy
for “so few people to pay attention”. “Once he was
elected, the digging began.”
The Democratic Party Central Committee will be
responsible for replacing Cohen. A handful of state
legislators have been mentioned, including Cohen’s
runner-up state Rep. Art Turner.

“Mardi Gras on Campus is
Catholic Campus Ministry’s
way of celebrating the last days
before we begin the season of
Lent. But it’s also a celebration
for anyone on campus who
wants to enjoy themselves with
their friends,” explained John
DiMucci, the Assistant Director
of Catholic Campus Ministry.
“For us it’s also a good way to
introduce the Campus Community
to some of the great programs
CCM provides all year long. “
This year was particularly chaotic
in New Orleans for Mardi Gras,
Rousset continued. “After the
Saints going to and winning
the biggest game in their 42
year existence the city is going
absolutely crazy. The parades
this year are packed and the
emotions are hard to describe.
It is undeniable that no city in
the world can throw a post-
Super Bowl party like we can.”
“I have been going to parades
since I was very little. Born
and raised in New Orleans
I just assume that I have seen
everything. Not so, after the Saints
winning the Super Bowl. It is
safe to say that Mardi Gras is not
‘purple, green and gold’ this year,
like the Super Bowl, Mardi Gras is
all black and gold” added Rousset.
The day following Mardi
Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is called
Ash Wednesday. A day in which
Catholics gather for a Mass service
where they mark themselves on
the foreheads with ashes. “Ash
Wednesday is the beginning of
the Lenten season for Christians,”
said Merkt. “It’s a day when
we mark perseveres with ashes
of burnt palms made from last
year's palms from palm Sunday.
As part of our celebration of our
repentance and love for God.”
Catholics are expected to
attend Mass every Sunday and
a number of other special days
throughout the year, including
Christmas and Easter, Easter also
a Sunday Mass, but while Ash
Wednesday is not one of these
days of Obligation, it is commonly
one of the most attended services.
“I think Ash Wednesday,
though not a Holy Day of
Obligation is one of the days
in the Church year that really
speaks to people,” commented
DiMucci. “The day tells us to
remember that we sometimes
miss the mark and fall short of
the persons God calls us to be."
On DePaul’s campus, Catholic
Campus Ministry and the local
St. Vincent’s Parish planned a
variety of masses to celebrate
Ash Wednesday and facilitate
the high numbers of Catholics
and other Christians seeking
to take part in the services.
“Ash Wednesday we have a total
of nine services between both
campuses between CCM and
St. Vincent’s Parish. Catholic
Campus Ministry has two mass
and two masses in the loop and
a couple parish masses and a
couple of ecumenical services.”
While Mardi Gras and Ash
Wednesday have very different
tones and rituals, their pairing
works together for many Christians.

what it means to be human; to be
people who both celebrate and look
