Using social media in your daily life now is a must. The purpose of social media
now is not only about seeking information mostly it is now all about getting new
friends and connecting with them every day, keeping in touch with your friend and
relative, stalking the people that you adore, hearing the opinion of other people to
every issue in society, having a enemy and you can also have a hater on social media.
Social media is being investigated by numerous social science researchers and an
increasing number of academic commentators are becoming more and more interested
in studying every social networking sites in internet because of their probable impact
on students in terms of there academic performances and to their behavior. Social
media can connect every people to someone they did not know its either you have the
same interest in life ,same political views , and even economic views ,the viewers can
either be different from you or it can also be they was attracted by you because you
have the same similarities in life. But still even though the purpose of using social
media is now different to every people it is still about sharing information to every
people and encouraging us to communicate with other to speak for our self.
Chatting is most popular activities when it comes to social media and it is one of
the easiest way to communicate to someone. There are web-sites where a person can
create a profile that can connect to someone ( facebook , twitter , instagram ,line ,
pinterest , tumbler , youtube ..etc)
Can you tell how many students logging in to every social networking sites every
morning and even at night? It would be million plus more students. That is why it can
effect their behavior because the longer you stay in the world of social media the
greater the chance it can effect your behavior to different and every means of
socializing in personal.
The target population on our research was defined as the students who always use
to logging in to every social networking sites and have a multiple social media
account. This was done to have a insight to student whom is a avid user of social
media that can provide a exceptional responses.
The responses were collected by giving questionnaire to students. The responses
were taken from the students in Central Luzon State University.

OBJECTIVE:

No matter where you are distance is not a barrier to anyone now when it comes to
communicating to someone all thanks to internet on having a different social
networking sites. Social media can build relation and staying in touch with all people
in the world. This research goal is to address the effect of social media towards the
student behavior and the consequences of using to most of your time in social
media .On the other objective that we wanted to achieve through our research is to:
Find out the influence of social networking sites on the behavior of students. We
wanted to know that: how would these sites affect the behavior of students in
socializing in person?
2
Specific Objective;
1. To know how the student in Central Luzon State University use social
media in their daily lives.
2. To determine the effect of each social media sites in the students.
3. To determine the effect of social media in the behavior of the students..

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This research aims to explain the importance of the proper usage of social
networking sites also to point out the particularly unpropitious effects it poses to
student’s daily lives. In order to provide much help, this study would like to give
enlightenment to the said problem. We would like to provide, through this research,
information about the impact of these sites to student that would hopefully lead to a
realization of their own standing in terms of SNS addiction. We would like to give a
certain form of guidance to those who are delved in situations aforementioned. Lastly,
we would also like to provide evidences that would solidify the support on controlling
the usage of social networking sites, thus reducing the risk of assimilating such
addicting activities.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY:

The study seeks to find out the effect of social media among the students on behavior
change. This study will limit itself only to the students in Central Luzon State
University. The study will focus itself only in one universities that are based in
Munoz Nueva Ecija.
On its scope and time-frame, it focused only on the effects of social media to the
behavior of CLSU High School students who were officially enrolled in the First
Semester, 2018-2019. Moreover, only basic statistics were employed since the study
is descriptive in nature. Finally, the purposive sampling was employed in choosing the
respondents of the study.

LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY:

The study is limited by time and financial resources and as result the research
will have to source for more financial resources and use alternative means. Since few
similar studies have been done especially in institutions of higher learning, there is
limited empirical literature on the area of impacts of social media on behavior change
especially in the context of Kenya. Another expected limitation is that the youth might
fail to give correct information on the basis of invasion of their privacy. The
researcher will explain to them that the study is purely for academic purposes and not
motivated by any other interests whatsoever.

DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS:

In order to understand clearly the subject matter, we define the following key
concepts: social media, and behavior, as they are essential to fully comprehend the
issue in focus.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to

community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.
3

Here are some prominent examples of social media:

 Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered

users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in
touch with friends, family and colleagues. According to statistics from the
Nielsen Group, Internet users within the United States spend more time on
Facebook than any other website.
 Twitter is a free microblogging service that allows registered members to
broadcast short posts called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast tweets and
follow other users' tweets by using multiple platforms and devices.
 Google+ (pronounced Google plus) is Google social networking project,
designed to replicate the way people interact offline more closely than is the
case in other social networking services. The project’s slogan is “Real-life
sharing rethought for the web.”
 Reddit is a social news website and forum where stories are socially curated
and promoted by site members. The site is composed of hundreds of sub-
communities, known as "subreddits." Each subreddit has a specific topic such
as technology, politics or music. Reddit site members, also known as,
"redditors," submit content which is then voted upon by other members. The
goal is to send well-regarded stories to the top of the site's main thread page.
 Pinterest is a social curation website for sharing and categorizing images
found online. Pinterest requires brief descriptions but the main focus of the
site is visual. Clicking on an image will take you to the original source, so, for
example, if you click on a picture of a pair of shoes, you might be taken to a
site where you can purchase them. An image of blueberry pancakes might take
you to the recipe; a picture of a whimsical birdhouse might take you to the
instructions.

BEHAVIOR

The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially towards others. Crdt.
Oxford Dictionary

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Transition in behavior has led the youth to explore new patterns of information
and perform multitasking. Though, this multitasking has to affect the time utility and
distribution in both positive and negative ways. One significant effect of these
channels is on the student’s academic performance and several empirical studies have
reported that the excessive unproductive time spent on social networking sites have
affect the students grades. (Facebook and Academic Performance)

According to recent studies, Facebook has negative effect on the academic

performance. The Britain School study which was about the Facebook and its effect.
Testing was done for a period of three months, the first two months access to
Facebook was denied and the third month access to Facebook was allowed. In this
study, it was noticed slight decline of grades, but what is even more important is lack
of concentration and poor knowledge acceptance. The problem does not occur only in
case when students were actually logged on to Facebook and didn’t pay attention to
what teacher says. The problem is in the fact that current event on the Facebook divert
them also in the time when they are not connected to it. The students do not
concentrate on their studies because their concentration is divided into study and
Facebook both. The test showed that the use of social networks in school has a
negative impact on grades.

Students&id=5692798 )

Same as mentioned above, a 2011 study found that the social networking sites
effects the students. It seems that only large amounts of time spent on Facebook
produce the greatest effect on outcome measures such as GPA and time spent
studying. This study also tell that there is no strong link between students and study
those who use the facebook. Ninety-two percent of students said that spending at least
some time on Facebook. Facebook users in this sample spent a substantial amount of
time on Facebook, tell that by a mean of 106 minutes on the site per day. So 106
minutes spend on the facebook slightly effects on the student grades. It is definitely a
distraction during class but Study says it depends on the person whether how much
time spend on the Facebook. Sharing links and checking to see what friends are up to
are positive predictors of GPAs, the study found. Checking to see what friends are up
to may be related to the construct of student engagement leading to greater academic
gains. (http://www.dailytargum.com/news/facebook-slightly-affects-student-grades-
study-says/article_75cdde4a-4584-11e1-84aa-001a4)

Similarly, a preliminary analysis of the “Effects of Facebook usage” by

undergraduate students at Lulea University of Technology in Sweden. The research
model used for this study tests the perceived affect of self regulation, trust and
personality traits on student achievements. The research model suggests the negative
mediating affects of the Social Networking Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and
Skype etc. The concluding remarks are that, a decrease occurs in the student’s

academic performance but a positive effect on the satisfaction with life. (Impact of
SNS usage on Students Academic Achievements)

As a students we have a responsibilities we need to full fill in school but

Nalwa and Anand (2003) stated that those who are addicted users love to use the
internet to set back their personal and professional responsibilities in which the final
outcome is poor academic performance and changes on their behavior.
According to the Abode 2013 Mobile Survey, 71 percent of people access social
media using mobile smartphones (Pun, 2013). The technology revolution has
enhanced the quality of human life. The advancements in social media, however, are
destroying relationships, compromising personal privacy, and degrading academic
performance.

In a survey conducted by Bagget and Williams (2012), students agree that social
media is a means to connect between individuals and is used as means to share
common interests. Social media represents useful tools for communication and
education, and provides an opportunity for networking in any profession. With time
constraints and demanding class schedules, social media helps students to multitask
because they do not want to spend time creating multiple individual messages. They
commonly use Facebook, watch television or a video, talk, email friends and family,
and write papers or conduct research all at the same time.

According to Tapscott (1998), the digital literacy possessed by youth has given
power to children in their relations with adults as 10 well as autonomy in the world.
Children are authorities on the internet. (Rettie, 2002). Also, technological modern
developments have contributed to the democratization of the family, especially in
countries that are pioneers in Information Communication Technologies (ICT.) The
domestication of media used by youth can be seen across ―diverse individuals versus
socially stratified culture, and nationally versus global identities and community‖
(Livignstone and Bober, 2005). The anxieties about ―the solitary nature of new
media use is contrasted by worries about lost community traditions and values‖.
(Livignstone and Bober, 2005). More specifically in relation to our aim the intensive
or high levels of online participation or internet use has been associated with online
risk. But, the simple use of internet cannot predict risk. (Enhancing Child Safety &
Online Technologies, 2008 for Internet & Society at Harvard University, 2008).

Children are socializing in a hybrid virtual space, learning in innovative ways,

creating a new language and practicing multicultural values (Tappscott, 1998). The
main characteristics of the ―N-Gen‖ culture are: independence, emotional and
intellectual openness, inclusion, free expression and strong views, innovative,
preoccupation with maturity, pleasure by the investigation, immediacy, and sensitivity
to corporate interest, authentication, and trust.
(Tapscott, 1998 pp. 62-69).

According to Tapscott (1998), the digital literacy possessed by youth has given
power to children in their relations with adults as well as autonomy in the world.
Consequently, harassment among peers has become unlimited thanks to the youth

access to the modern technologies. Bullying has occurred in a new territory, online
(Li, 2006).

The study (Akubugwo, Ijeoma and Maria Burke, 2013) inspected the significance
with respect to studies, possible consequences and practical progress of inspected the
scholarly significance, conceivable consequences for social conduct and scholastic
advancement of social media. The study utilized both subjective and quantitative
strategies for information gathering including questionnaires and interviews.
Discoveries of this study propose that social media could contrarily effect on the
students' social conduct, scholastic advancement. The study indicated that automatic
software program that will shut down after a certain time, should be used to control its
utilization by students. This showed that the respondents stressed that consistent
association in social media can make the understudy turn into a possible social media
addict. This can lead the subjects under study to disappointment and in the end affect
the grades. Additionally the respondents said that the inappropriate and unfiltered
content seen online can without much of a stretch lead the students to get bad impact
from them. With frequent use of unattended social media, students may indulge in
utilization of terrible slangs, disregard to folks, educators, and the law in the general
public.

Due to the addictive behavior, students use social media even in classrooms
which creates disturbance for other students and concentration issues in them.
Inability to carefully follow lectures affects their grades. In this way, social
networking increase students’ tendency towards non-instructive, unscrupulous and
inappropriate activities, for example, futile visiting and time killing by stalking .The
authors concluded that in order to spare youngsters' and youthful grown-ups'
academic lives, educators and parents should work together. It appears that the best
way to reduce damages of social media is this coordinated effort.

Social interactions through technology also can be an aid for students and families
who are shy or overly anxious in social situations (Pierce, 2009). More generally, social
site networks may be of use in enhancing relationships between teachers and students
(Mazer, Murphy, Simonds, 2007).

With respect to psychosocial development, researchers have suggested that

participation on social network sites influences such matters as identity formation and
social skill development. A recent study suggests such participation may have positive
effects with respect to how youth cope with emotional distress such as grieving following
someone‘s death (Williams & Merten, 2009).

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK:
A theoretical framework is the foundation of Hypothetic-Deductive research,
as it is the basis of the hypothesis that you will develop. A theoretical framework
represents your beliefs on how certain phenomena, variables or concepts are related to
each other i.e. a model and an explanation of why you believe that these variables are
associated with each other i.e. a theory.

The theoretical structure on which this study is based in the theory that there are
meaningful and reliable effects of social media in the academic performance of
students of grade 9 in English.
This study on how the effects of social media in the academic performance in
English. The framework is presented by the schematic diagram in figure 1.

The process of building a theoretical framework includes three basic features:

 Introducing definitions of concepts or variables in your model.

 Developing a conceptual model that provides a descriptive representation of
your theory.
 Coming up with a theory that provides an explanation for relationships
between the variables in your model.
A conceptual model helps you to structure your discussion of the literature. A
conceptual model describes how the concepts in your model are related to each other.
A good model is based on a sound theory. A theory or a clear explanation for the
relationships in your model is the last component of the theoretical framework. A
theory attempts to explain the relationships between the variables in your model.
