Welcome to Penguin Music!

Hello students, parents, and guardians! Welcome to the beginning of

another great school year, I am the new music teaching Ms. Stickler. I am
very excited to spend my first year here at Richardson Elementary teaching music
to students of grade levels K-5th. This handbook is to break down content that will be
taught in my classroom and rules/expectations for students to follow:
What Music Class will look like
Each grade will have their own designated music class time each week. Coming into
the classroom, students will put belongings in designated spaces and sit in their
assigned spot until class begins. Content for each grade level will be building upon
and expanding knowledge of content from previous music experiences. Students will
learn many aspects of music, in addition to playing a recorder and clapping to a beat.
They will learn to sing, dance, improvise, and learn music theory.
Class Topics
This is a list of basic topic ideas that will be covered during the school year:
-Learning to use their voice in various ways such as making sound effects
-Solfege pitching with the matching hand signs
-Reading simple rhythms and pitches represented by icons (Older classes will be learning
with actual musical notation
-Use of expressive qualities (soft/loud and fast/slow)
-Learning how to express music through movement, use movement to show beat, and
create movements to lyrics of a song
-Using nonpitched instruments and body percussion to keep steady beat and practice basic
rhythms
-Using pitched instruments to demonstrate high and low of pitches
- Create improvisations using pitched and nonpitched instruments, solfege, and vocal
variations
*All of these topics will vary by grade level and be taught through a variety of folk songs, exercises
and prerecorded music*

Grading
A point system will be used for daily grading. Students will be graded on participation and
demonstration of activities in class:
There is a total of 5 points of a daily grade:
Actively Participating in class and activities- 2 points
Demonstrating content of lesson- 1 point
Positive behavior and during class time- 1 point
All equipment was handled properly and safely- 1 point

Points will be combined and totaled for a midsession grade (Christmas Break) and for a final grade
at the end of the year. The points will be grouped into levels ranging from Excellent to
