We are no stranger when it comes to calamities. Our country, the Philippines, is surrounded
by bodies of water. Thus, we often experience water-related disasters. It should not be these
disastrous, but with how irresponsibly we devour our environment, it seems like we are now
slowly getting a taste of what it’s like to be robbed of our lives.

The recent calamity that came, Typhoon Ulysses, is one of the catastrophic typhoon we
encountered. Ulysses released powerful winds and heavy rains that made millions of us wide
awake and terrified of our lives throughout its stay in our country. With the amount of rain it
unleashed, countless homes were flooded. Even a whole province was submerged in water. It
easily became a nightmare that will be written in our history.

We are all familiar with how reckless we took advantage of our environment. It seems
like as time passes by, we let ourselves be dominated by the captivating powers of money, that
we forget what is important. Capitalists were taking and taking, as long as they see that they can
benefit from it. They never asked, they just take and take. We are ruining our future. We are
destroying our environment for the betterment of our lives, without taking into account the
tragedy it bears.

What I learned in the past weeks was how powerful our environment can be to bring a
such devastating calamity. We now have enough reason not to trash our environment. If we still
continue our harming activities to our nature, then maybe there's no hope for us anymore. It
also made me think of how and what I can do in order to save our country from poor governance.
With the current crisis we are facing, paired with the disaster that came, many of our countrymen
were barely surviving. Most of them not only lost their source of income, but also their homes.
With the piled problems we faced, there's no clear solution, there's no clear plan as to what their
response will be. The happening we experienced only made me want more to fight for this
country. To fight for the better future, we all deserve to have.

This may not be the last time we will experience such destructive happening. We have to
be responsible, and be more mindful of what we do. Little things can be a massive one if done
by many. We may never have a chance again, so all that I can wish is for us to bring back the
humanity we are slowly losing.
