2.11. Porter’s Five Forces Model

Figure 3: Porter’s 5 forces model

Bargaining power of customers (Low)

In banking industry, the bargaining power of the customers is low. Customers can not change the
rules and regulation of the bank. The interest rate and the charges are also set by bank. Though
there are lots of options in the market. But customers don’t want to change the bank because the
switching cost is high as the process is also a hassle.

Bargaining power of suppliers (High)

Bargaining power of suppliers is high. The main supplier of Jamuna bank ltd is its depositors.
Depositors can deposit their money in any other bank as there are lots of available options. So they
can choose as their requirement.

Threats of new entrants (Low)

Threats of new entrants are low. Because it’s not easy to open a new bank. There are many rules
and regulation to open a bank. In recent time some new bank are opened but they are not major
threat.

Threats of substitutes (Moderately Low)

Substitute of banks can be non-banking financial institutions. In Bangladesh there are some non-
banking financial institutions. They are not much in number. So the threat from substitutes is
moderately low for Jamuna Bank Ltd.

16
Rivalry among existing firms (High)

In Bangladesh banking industry there are lots of strong competitors. They are offering attractive
products and services to attract customers. So the rivalry among existing firm is high.

2.12. SOWT ANALYSIS

Figure 4: SOWT Analysis

STRENGTHS
 JBL is newly commercial bank in banking sector but they build strong reputation in short
time.
 They provide extra ordinary service to their customer for gaining the customer value to their
product.
 Strong network throughout the country and provide quality of service to every level of
customer.
 JBL has been founded by a group of prominent entrepreneurs of the country.
 Jamuna Bank ltd has an interactive corporate culture. The working environment is very
friendly, interactive and informal. And there are no hidden barriers or boundaries while
communicate between the superior and the employees.
 Jamuna Bank ltd has the reputation of being the provider of good quality service to its,
potential customers.
WEAKNESSES
 The main important thing is that the Bank has no clear mission statement and strategic plan.
The Banks not have any long-term strategies of whether it wants to focus on retail.
 Banking or become a corporate Bank. The path of the future should be determined now
with a strong feasible strategic plan.

17
 Higher service charge in some areas of banking operation than that of nationalized banks
discourages customers from opening or maintaining accounts with this bank.
 There is a very little practice for increasing motivation in the workers by the management.
 Small market share.
 They have a limited branch network over the country.
 In terms of promotional sector, Jamuna Bank ltd has to more emphasize on that.
 Some of the job in Jamuna Bank ltd has no growth or advancement path. So lack of
motivation exists in persons filling those positions. This is a weakness of Jamuna Bank Ltd
that it is having a group of unsatisfied employees.

OPPORTUNITIES
 JBL can pursue diversification strategy in expanding its current line of business. The
management can consider options for starting merchant banking or diversity in to easing
and insurance. By expanding business portfolio, JBL can shrink business risk.
 Opportunity in retail banking lies in the fact that the country increased population is
gradually learning to adopt consumer finance. The bulk of our population is middle class.
 Different types of retail lending products have great appeal to this class. So a wide variety
of retail lending products has a very large and easily pregnable market.

THREATS
 Default culture is very much familiar in our country. For a bank, it is very harmful.
 As JBL is new, it has not faced it seriously yet. However, as the bank grows older it might
become a big problem.
 The Central Bank exercises strict control over all banking activities in local banks like JBL.
Sometimes the restriction impose barrier in the normal operations and policies of the bank.
 Rival bank easily copy the product offering of JBL. Therefore, the bank is in continuous of
product innovation to gain temporary advantage over its Competitors.
 Some contemporary, multinational and upcoming banks are competitors of JBL. These
Bank poses threat for JBL. So JBL Should takes necessary steps to compete with them in
the current market.
 Frequent rate devaluation and foreign exchange rate fluctuation is causing problem.
 Government is imposing newer and harder rules and regulations.

5.2 Background of the Problem Statement:

During my internship period I have worked on credit department in Jamuna Bank Limited at
Kamarpara Branch, while I was working, I have seen that car loan is very unpopular loan and
many customers are not interested to taking car loan. The list of customer in car loan is so poor.
For that reason the bank cannot improve financially from this car loan section. So, this research
is all about to identify the exact problem and solution.

5.5 Research Methodology:
5.5.1 Research Approach:
For completing the research, I used quantitative research method. This research is based on the
primary data collecting through a survey on personnel enlisted in JBL located at Kamarpara
Branch. The data then analyzed using t-test.

5.6 Population and Sampling Method:

5.6.1 Population:
Population is a large number that refers to make the total set of observations. It is donated by “N
= 15” The population of this research project is the employees of entire Jamuna Bank Limited at
Kamarpara Branch.

5.6.2 Sample Frame:

The sample frame of this study consists of about 15 employees of Jamuna Bank Ltd, “Kamarpara
Branch”

5.6.3 Sample Size:

To conduct the research I need to select the sample size. The total number of sample size is 11
those all are the employee of JBL Kamarpara Baranch.

5.6.4 Research Instrument:

I used closed ended structured survey questionnaire. I prepared a form with a set of questions
consciously designed to stimulate responses from the selected respondents for data collection. I
have used 5 Likert Scales.

5.6.5 Types of Research:

My research is an expletory research. The expletory research is defined as a research used to
investigate a problem which is not clearly defined.

5.6.6 Methods of Data Collection:

Primary sources:
Some primary data are collected by interview of the bank employee and by discussion with
the executives and officer of JBL. Here primary data are collected through spending three
months in the JBL during the working hour. Here I observed the total banking process of
Jamuna Bank where I took the opportunity to do the research.

51
Secondary Sources: Secondary data are collected from as follows:
i. Annual Report of Jumana Bank Ltd
ii. Official Files
iii. Published Documents
iv. Website

5.6.7 Research Limitation:

 Time limitation due to corona virus.
 Sometimes employees may give biased data
 Authority did not disclose much information due to some rules and regulations of
bank.
 Due to first time experience was the main obstacle of the study.

5.7 Data analysis:

For analysis of data Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, different tables and graphs were used
to make the data meaningful. Hypothesis testing originates to a meaningful conclusion from
the experimental data. In addition, basic statistical techniques of different measures of
central propensity have been used for analyzing the data. As my sample size is l1, I have
used T-test for the study. The following formula has been followed:

𝑇_𝑐𝑎𝑙 = ( X̅ ― µ)/(s/√n)

Where,
μ = mean value
n = sample size
s = Sample Standard deviation
X̅ = Average

tvalue of confidence level (95%) from T table 2.131

52
Level of significance 5%

Based on my analyzed, I made findings, recommendations and conclusion.

5.7.1 Data Analysis and Interpretation:

Hypotheses Test: t test

The following formula has been followed:

We know that,
X 
t test =
S/ n

Where,
µ = mean value
n = sample size
s = sample Standard deviation

5.8.1 Recommendations:
 Though the rate of interest is higher so, JBL’s need to compromise their rate of
interest for car loan. If they do this they can be able to attain their target for car
loan.
 As the income level of Kamarpara residence is higher enough so if they provide
some extra facilities for car loan services people might be attracted for this loan
system. Example: ATM card system.
 If JBL Kamarpara branch give the customer more priority and some extra
ordinary customer services they can achieve their target from car loan.
 As JBL is financially lucrative enough for customer so if they maintain it, it is
possible to gain more success form car loan.
 If JBL want to fill up their target form car loan they need to improve their
marketing activities. Example: By giving advertisement.

5.9 Conclusion:
Jamuna Bank Limited is a strong and active player in the financial system. The performance of
these bank is improving day by day. It earn profited in different sector. The popularity of this
bank is increasing day by day which leads to increase competition as well.

The car loan service of JBL wasn’t popular to the customers. For minimizing the problem and
continuously keep the growing or doing better JBL should identify the customer’s choice area,
their needs, their wants, also fill the communication gap with customers. So, that customer can
feel happy with JBL car loan service.
As this car loan systems has some limitations which I already discussed in my recommendation
part. So if it is possible to overcome those limitations I believe JBL”s car loan system will be one
of the leading facilities for this branch and definitely they can achieve their desire profit from
this car loan scheme.
