HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Before starting the module, kindly set aside other tasks that will disturb you while
enjoying the lessons. Read the simple instructions below to successfully attain the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Read carefully all the contents and follow the instructions indicated on every page of this
module.
2. Write in your notebook or any writing pad the concepts about the lessons. Writing
enhances learning, which is important to develop and keep in mind.
3. Write in your notebook the concepts that you learned. Writing enhances learning and
helps you keep in mind what is important
4. Perform all the provided activities in the module.
5. Let your facilitator/ guardian assess your answers using the answer key.
6. Enjoy studying.

Expectations
In this module, you are expected to express concentrations of solutions
quantitatively by preparing different concentrations of mixtures according to
uses of materials (S7MTId-3)
Pre-Test
DIRECTIONS: Read each question carefully. Choose and encircle the letter of the correct
answer.
1. A solution is prepared by mixing 30 grams of table salt, (Sodium chloride) and 120 grams of
water. What is the concentration of table salt in % by mass?
A. 5 % C. 15%
B. 10% D. 20%
2. 120 grams of sugar solution is labeled to contain 20% sugar by mass. How many grams of
sugar are present in the solution?
A. 15 g C. 24 g
B. 18 g D. 40 g
3. What is the concentration (in % by volume) of a solution containing 70.0 mL alcohol and 430
mL water
A. 14 % C. 16 %
B. 15 % D. 18 %
4. How many grams of salt are needed to prepare 500 mL of a 10% brine solution?
A. 15 g salt C. 60g of salt
B. 50 g D. 75 g of salt

Looking Back to Your Lesson
In module 6, you learned that solutions are made up of two parts: solute and solvent. To
recall this lesson, copy each bubble map below in your notebook. The large circle contains the
solution. Write the solute, solvent, and the type of the solution in the smaller circles.

Brief Introduction
A. Percent by mass
Percent (%) by mass is equal to the mass of solutes divided by the total mass of the
solution times 100. Take note that the mass of the solution is the total masses of the solute and
solvent.
(mass of solution = mass solute + mass of solvent)
mass of solute
% by mass = ——————————— x 100
mass of the solution
EXAMPLE:
What is the concentration in % by mass of a solution containing5.0 g of Salt (NaCl) in 500 g of
water?
5.0 g
% by mass = ———— x 100
502g
= 1.0 %
Percent by volume (% V/ V) =gives the volume of liquid solute dissolved in a definite volume of
solution.
volume of solute
% by volume = ———————————— x 100
volume of solution
4
EXAMPLE:
What is the % by volume of a solution containing 25 mL solute and 500 mL of solvent?
volume of solute
% by volume = ———————————— x 100
volume of solution
25 mL
= ——————— x 100
525 mL
= 4.76 %
