Reading Response 1

After reading sections 1.0-1.5 and sections 2.0-2.6, it has been pretty

evident that writers demonstrate a clear connection between genre, rhetorical

situation and audience. These three concepts seem to sum up the motive to the

works behind every writer’s labor. The sections demonstrate an imaginary

triangle, and this indicates that each of these concepts are a chain that are

connected in every writer’s piece of work. Also, genre, rhetorical situation and

audience individually have a vital effect on the way that a text can be analyzed.

Although they are not as formally or explicitly mentioned, perspective and point

of view come into play and can affect the way a person views a specific genre or a

writer’s piece of work based on the type of audience that the writer wanted to

address in his piece of work.

The concept of genre is a very essential part of the writing process as it

helps the audience sort essays and books into specific categories, so it would

become easier for them to identify where they can obtain pieces that they feel

are addressing the needs and interests that they desire at the moment. Also,

genres help the writers recognize what kind of essays or books they seem to love

writing or the areas where they seem to possess a strength. Genres can effect the

way a text is analyzed, because stating the genre of a certain piece would cause

bias in the audience’s analysis due to the background knowledge or opinions they

may previously contain on that specific genre or topic before reading the actual

composition. The rhetorical situation is the main situation in the writer’s piece

that basically forms the crux of the writer’s argument and summarizes where the

reading will be heading. The rhetorical situation can effect the way that a text is

analyzed, because it indicates the context of the situation in the writer’s work and

it also depends on the reader’s perspective and point of view, as mentioned

before, to have the most thorough response possible on the writer’s article. The

rhetorical situation can cause a huge bias to the reader’s textual analysis as the

manner in which the situation and argument are presented by the author affects

the reader’s point of view on the information given to them by the author. In

addition to genre and rhetorical situation, audiences are an essential aspect to

the analysis of textual pieces. Audiences are able to create genres with the essays

and works they have analyzed and they can identify the rhetorical situation in

those pieces too. Audiences are at the receiving end of the writers’ compositions

so they place a huge impact on how the text will be analyzed, because majority

opinion will cause a reputation to be placed on the text and this can cause others

views to be influenced and prejudiced.

Besides how these concepts can place an effect on the way that a text is

analyzed, these concepts are exemplified in real-life everyday. To start off, genre

is a part of everyone’s daily life as there are classifications everywhere in the

world. For example, the concept of movies is a huge aspect of daily life in the

world. These can be viewed as genres as the various kinds of movies and their

scripts are how people classify their interests when deciding what to watch.

Certain movie scripts and events in the movies make them classified as a thriller

genre or action genre, which are the kinds of movies I prefer watching. Specific

elements in each kind of movie genre are what leads them to be differentiated

from one another. Movies in the love genre are centered around affection

between people while movies in the thriller or action genre are centered around

conflicts between two main sides. The preference of each person affects the way

in which the movie will place an impact on them. An example of rhetorical

situation would be the main situation that has been constantly present

throughout the Harry Potter series that I used to read when I was in middle

school. The setting and context of the series being placed around a school of

magic and the conflicts occurring due to the background of the main character,

Harry Potter, is where I felt I was able to be hooked onto the events in the series

the whole time. Lastly, an example of audiences in real-life can be seen through a

book I read when I was in middle school called “Code: A Navajo Code”. The whole

book was told through the perspective of a person that had served in the war,

which forms the crux of the story. The information presented would have

definitely affected a way that the person analyzes the text, because it is biased as

it is told from a first-person perspective. It may not be the most biased

perspective, but the information presented may not be viewed as the most

reliable, so the opinion on the facts depicted will cause a big partiality in the

analysis formed by me or any reader who has been acknowledged of the ideas

received by the book.

To conclude with, the concepts of genre, rhetorical situation, and audience

are essential pieces of a writer’s work. They are all part of an imaginary triangle

and their effects can be seen in each concept. Perspective and point of view also

play a deep role as they exemplify how the writer’s work will be received and

viewed by the outside world. Genre demonstrates the kind of work or type of

work that the writer will be presenting in their composition. Rhetorical situation

revolves around what the crux of the writer’s work will be about. The views of the

audience is by far the biggest role in this triangle as they are part of the receiving

end and the majority opinion forms the reputation that the writers’ articles will

have in the outside world.
