trauma

-shocking, terrifying, life-threatening event

Hanora
-was 15 during the omagh bombing (aug 15, 1998)
-was waiting to meet with her friends
-thought it was just a bomb scare because there have been a lot of bomb scares
lately at the time
-became irritated and angry
-made her parents extremly worried
-1st day in queen's university, watched 9/11 on tv, trauma was triggered
-didn't eat, lose weight
-experienced flashbacks
-exams = bomb, thinks that the hall will explode if she go in there
-lost interests in things, couldn't be bothered going out, impossible to
experience any joy in life
-survivor's guilt - can't believe that she was able to walk away uninjured and had
no right to feel like she was injured; felt guilty for not helping a dying boy she
saw (part of therapy was relieving the moment she saw the boy but knowing he is at
peace now)

Claire
-victims of multiple rapes
-was sleeping with a guy, raped by the guy after being rejected, went to a friend
but was dismissed "not the best guy, but is not the worst", afraid to tell the
authorities because of fear of being dismissed or laughed at
-raped by an older guy who used to give her coccaine but has no conscious memory
of what happened
-raped by another guy after an argument (was talking to another man in a club, but
was later dragged by the guy out to go back to his apartment and rape her)
-trigger: cotton or duvet covers
-has flashbacks when triggered
-thought of suicide before
-nighttime flashbacks - woken up in the middle of the night, feels weight on chest
or feels like being pinned (chronic physical pain)
-hypervigilance: all men are threat, leaves a bar if it's filled with me
-met the man who assaulted her, didnt run away

Mark
-just moved to London, was present during Westminster attack (March 22, 2017)
-witnessed a terrorist attack, terrorist drove a car onto pedestrians
-lack of sleep, constant anxiety
-can't cross the pedestrian lane where the attack happened because of fear of
being plowed by a car (hypervigilance)
-looked up westminster bridge on google maps street view, had a panic attack
-fear revolves around things that didnt happen/werent present during the attacks
(bombs, multiple attackers)
-survivor's guilt - felt he has no right to feel that way

Stewart
-was a police officer during the omagh bombing
-was out in a bar when the bombing occured
-helped a pregnant woman
-doubts his ability as a police officer
-had nightmares of a victim of the bombing that looks like his mom
-had become angry and withdrawn
-been feared by his wife about his anger, made his wife afraid that she will lose
him
-disappeared one night without informing his wife, was threatened by another than
that he will kill him
-thought about suicide, and didn't mind if someone killed him
-trigger: burning smells
-watches cars go past their house (hypervigilance)
-hears babies crying
-blames himself for the loss of the pregnant woman (should have dug dipper, went
to help earlier)
-survivor's guilt: should have done more than what he did

victims of ptsd
-ruminate the event after it happened
-first responders: questions their role and ability
-believes that their flashbacks just come out of the blue and that they have no
control of it
-chronic physical pain - induces flashback
-hypervigilance
-supression of memory magnifies the (1) amount (2) strenght of flashbacks
