Fuel Leakage On LP Pipes

1 Background
Recent change in fuel regulations has lead to the necessity of frequent switches between HFO and LFO in
order to use light fuel during permanence in ports.
This quick switching among the two fuels can lead, in some cases, to a quick reduction of the sealing
property of the rings installed on low pressure fuel lines (supply and discharge).

2 Application
All W38B engines.

3 Corrective Action
In order to prevent any possibility of unexpected fuel leakage and to keep expected safety margin, in case
of frequent switching HFO/LFO it is suggested to renew all sealing rings installed on low pressure HP fuel
pumps piping at 6000 running hours, instead of 8000 as previously expected.
Further to this, we strongly suggest to keep also the fuel viscosity and temperature within the limits stated
in the Instruction Manual.

Note: maximum allowed fuel temperature will be anyway 130° C for high viscosity fuels.

4 Parts Replacement
All O-rings shown in Figure 1 must be renew every 6000 running hours.

5 Chamfer On Fuel Pipes

In order to facilitate the installation of the flanges, it is suggested to modify the chamfer on the fuel pipes as
indicated in Figure 2 (chamfer has to be enlarged from 3 mm to 4 mm).
For assistance and information refer to your local Wärtsilä Network Company.
