Unit Lesson Plan for Choir

Context: The 4th grade class will be listening, learning, and performing an English piece, titled

“Oh What a Beautiful Morning”.

National Standards:

- MU: Pr4.2.4a: Demonstrate understanding of the structure and the elements of music (such as

rhythm, pitch, and form) in music selected for performance.

- MU: Pr4.2.4b When analyzing selected music, read and perform using iconic and/or standard

notation.

Part One - Introduction to Piece:

- Students will gather into the classroom as the teacher begins to play a video of the

selected piece they will be learning throughout the weeks.

- The teacher will be showing the piece “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” sung by Hugh

Jackman, as well as the original score with lyrics on YouTube as well:

- After the two videos are done, the teacher will invite the students to a discussion about

the piece. Questions:

 How did you enjoy the piece?

 What do you think the piece is about?

 What overall feelings did you get from the piece?

- After the discussion, the teacher will hand out worksheets to all the students with these

questions and ask the students to find other videos of “Oh What a Beautiful Morning” on

YouTube. The teacher will also inform the students that this worksheet should be due by

tomorrow.

Part Two - Further Discussion and Movement:

- The teacher will ask the students to share what they wrote with the rest of the class for

homework.

- After each student has spoken, the teacher will ask them to stand up and be ready to move

around the room.

- The teacher will begin to play the song once more, and instruct the students to do the

following:

 Step to the rhythm of the song until told to stop.

 Step to the melody of the song until told to stop.


 Walk as you would someone singing this song and use broad movements while doing so.

 Try and sing along to the lyrics while doing so.

Part Three - Sing and Follow:

- Once the students are seated, the teacher will hand out the lyric sheets for “Oh What a

Beautiful Morning”.

- The teacher will play the song on YouTube and have the students read along.

- After listening to the song, the teacher will then instruct the students to sing along as

well.

Part Four – Rehearsing I:

- After first listening to the song once more, the class will begin rehearsing the song.

- The teacher will explain to the students that they will be practicing the song and

rehearsing in order to prepare for a performance of the piece.

- The class will rehearse as a group, all singing the same part.

Part Five – Rehearsing II:

- The teacher will separate the students into groups based off high and low parts.
- The teacher will instruct the students in order to give a clearer understanding of their

voice parts.

- The teacher will sing along with the students at first, then after 2 times singing full

through, conduct the students to sing by themselves.

Part Six – Performance:

- The students will perform in front of their parents after school on the day given by both

the parents and the students.

- After the performance, the teacher will evaluate the students and tell them how they did,

and also ask how they think they did or how they could have improved.

Learning Goals:

- Students will identify different voice parts.

- Students will perform the given English piece in front of an audience.

- Students will improvise interpretive and improvised movements.

- Students will define what about their performance was good or needed improvement.
Assessment:

- The teacher will assess student identification of voice parts.

- The teacher will assess student performance of the English piece.

- The teacher will assess student improvisation of movements following song.

- The teacher will assess students understanding what f improvement and regulate after

performing.
