PREP 1300: MY COLLEGE EXPERIENCE DC SALS ASSIGNMENT 1

PREP –SALS Assignment

Reflect

For this assignment, I chose to complete the SALS ONLINE Editing Skills

Workshop. This workshop reviewed the most common grammatical mistakes

students make in their work and how to correct them. The workshop also went over

how to edit and proofread your work to help make your writing flow better and

bring it to an academic level.

Rate

I would rate this workshop 3.5 out of 5 stars.

First, I found that the quiz that you took before starting the workshop was

very helpful, as it showed me where I was with my grammar knowledge. Second,

the instructor in the video was very informative, going over the 20 grammatical

errors that are most common in detail. Fixing the errors in the video also made it

easier for me to understand why these fixes needed to be done and how they were

done. The instructor also went through how to get to certain pages we would need

to complete the workshop. The only downside was how slow the instructor spoke. I

found that I needed to watch the video at 1.75 speed to stay engaged.

Reflect

While completing the SALS ONLINE Editing Skills Workshop, I found that

it showed me many things, how going over the basics can be refreshing, how being

a native English speaker has its advantages, and how I need to slow down when I

am doing my work. First, the SALS workshop showed me that it can be refreshing

to over the basics of English now and then. Even though I am in an advance

communications class, I find that we sometimes skip over the basics, going straight

into the more complex ways of the English language. We don’t tend to focus too

heavily on the basics, but when I reviewed them in this workshop, I found that I

had a better understanding of them, the instructor shining a new light on things I

didn’t know about. It made me realize how often I should be going over my basics

to fully understand and know why certain grammatical things are done the ways

they are. Secondly, I found that being a native English speaker helps me a lot in the

courses I am in and understanding the complexities of the English language.

Realizing this advantage made me reflect on how grateful I am, as well as how this

will help me in the future, as well as how not being a native English speaker could

have a negative impact on others. During the workshop, I was frustrated with how

slow the instructor was speaking in the video, but I realized that it was not because

he was making the video to help the native English speakers that might be

watching the video, but for those who do not have English as their main language.

It made me realize the privilege I have. Lastly, the workshop made me realize I

need to slow down while I do my work, shining a spotlight on how when I rush

through my work, I am only hurting myself. During the final quiz, I found myself

rushing through the questions and answers, barely glancing at them before I

answered what I believe to be correct. This was not the best idea, as I did not pass

the, to me, simple quiz. I reflected on all of the other times that I have rushed

through my work and gotten a bad mark, all because I wanted to get it done as

soon as possible, and thought myself smarter than I was. Not passing the quiz hit

me hard, making me question why I rush through my work. As of right now, I am

not sure why I still do it, but I plan on breaking this habit as soon as I can. In the

end, taking the SALS ONLINE Editing Skills Workshop made me realize that

going over the basics of English is refreshing, that I am privileged to have English

as my first language, and that I need to slow down when I am doing my work as to

not make silly mistakes.
