COURSE NUMBER: IT101

COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Computing

COURSE CREDIT: 5 units

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provide an overview of the Computing Industry and Computing profession, including Research and Applications in
different fields; of Computing of different fields such as Biology, Sociology, Environment and Gaming; an Understanding of ACM Requirements; an Appreciation of
the history of Computing; and Knowledge of the key Components of Computer Systems (Organization and Architecture), Malware, Computer Security, Internet
and Internet Protocols, HTML4/5 and CSS.(CMO No. 25 series of 2015).
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, student should be able to:
LO1. Explain fundamentals principles, concepts and evolution of computing systems as they relate to different fields.
LO2. Expound on the recent developments in the different computing knowledge areas.
LO3. Analyze solutions employed by organizations to address different computing issues

COURSE OUTLINE:
Section 1.
I. Introduction of Computers
Core Idea: Definition of computer, history, types, characteristics, and some terminologies related to the information technology course.
II. Hardware
Core Idea: Different types of input, output, storage devices, functions of the CPU and its components.

III. Software
Core Idea: Application software and system software.
IV. Number System
Core Idea: Conversion of Binary to Decimal vice versa. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of binary numbers.

Section 2.
I. Computer Virus
Core Idea: Virus, types of virus, how to prevent them and how to fix a system unit affected by it.
II. Network
Core Idea: Network its components, types, categories and why we use them.
III. Internet.
Core Idea: Web, Protocols, URL, Domains, and terms and definitions related to Internet.
IV. Artificial Intelligence
Core Idea: Robotics, speech recognition, face recognition and other latest inventions.
V. The Future of Computer Technology
Core Idea: Technologies that are not yet release to the market or applied but has a potential to be out soon.

I. MS Word
Core Idea: A word-processing program with which you can quickly and efficiently author and format documents.
II. MS Excel
Core Idea: A spreadsheet program with which you can analyze, communicate, and manage information.
III. MS PowerPoint
Core Idea: A program with which you can develop and present dynamic, professional-looking slide presentations.
IV. MS Publisher
Core Idea: A desktop publishing program with which you can layout newsletters, cards, calendars, and other publications.
