Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Chemistry Lesson/Date: Monday/Wednesday Nov 16/18 Time:

Stage 1: Desired Results

GLEs: Students will: Describe the properties and interactions of various household liquids and
solids, and interpret their interactions.

SLEs: Students will:

Recognize and identify examples of the following kinds of mixtures:
• two or more solids; e.g., sand and sugar
• a solid and a liquid; e.g., sugar and water
• two or more liquids; e.g., milk and tea.

Learning Students will:

Objectives  Students will contrast solids, liquids and gases
 Students will understand the difference between a mixture and a pure substance
 Students will identify mixtures of two or more solids, two liquids, and solid and liquid
 Students will recognize examples of each type of mixture.
 Students will experiment with mixtures.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Formative 2 formative assessments will take Summative N/A
Assessment place Assessment
During the PowerPoint
- Will ask students how they are
feeling in regard to mixtures by using
the finger method
4 = I understand, and I could explain
this to someone else
3 = I can understand and do this by
myself
2 = I need more examples and practice
1 = I don’t understand.
If the majority of students are a 2 or
lower I will go over the concept again,
if most of the students are a 3 and
higher we will move on

The second formative assessment is in

form of an activity.
This activity will be a group work
activity for students to demonstrate
their knowledge
Students will get into groups of 3 (one
group of 2)
Each group will get a piece of chart
paper.
I want you to display on your chart
paper (in any way you would like)
 1.) What are the 3 states of
matter?
 2..) What is a mixture?
Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Chemistry Lesson/Date: Monday/Wednesday Nov 16/18 Time:
 3.) What is a pure substance?
 4.) Examples (can be drawings
or words) of the types of
mixtures we covered..
 Solid and Solid – Liquid and
Solid and Liquid and Liquid.
At the end of class the teacher will
look at the chart papers to see if
students understand concepts learned
in today’s lesson.

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to Ensure school has chart paper Resources Laptop
Lesson: Email PowerPoint to my TA to Bring:
or myself so I can access it
Time: Content/Description Notes/
Assessments:
Students will learn about mixtures, pure substances each type of mixture through a
combination of direct instruction and interactive work time. Students will
understand differences between a pure substance and the 3 types of mixtures.
Students will be able to identify examples. Students will get a chance to
demonstrate their knowledge by creating a poster/chart with key definitions and
examples after the direct instructions.

Introduction: 2 minutes
- The introduction will include with stating the learning outcomes.
- Let students know we will be looking at the different states of matter – as
well as what they are called when we combine them – get them hooked!

Transition – continue with presentation

Body:
 Learning Activity 1: 20-30 minutes Introduction to Mixtures! –
Direct/Interactive Instruction.
 I will be using a power point presentation to start with included videos.
 Solid, Liquid and Gas will be defined as.
Solids are objects that keep their own shape and do not flow in each temperature
 Ice, Books, Chairs, Desks
Liquid
 Liquids Do NOT have their own shape but can take shapes of the container
or space they are in
 Can be different colors and thickness, custard vs water
 Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice
Gas
 Gases are air substances that can move around freely
 Can flow to fit in to a container as they do not have their own shape
 You can put your hand through gases and won’t feel them
Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Chemistry Lesson/Date: Monday/Wednesday Nov 16/18 Time:
 I will ask during each if there is another example of solid, liquid or gas they
can think of, take hands.
 What if we mix these? What are they called?
 We will watch a short clip explaining mixtures in form of a picnic.
 Students will then be introduced to mixtures and the definition of mixtures
and given some examples of mixtures (Multiple types of matter mixed all
together, 2 solids together, 2 liquids together, A liquid and a solid
together.)
 Students will be asked to brainstorm mixtures that they have seen around
their house with a partner.
 We will come back in 2 minutes
 We will come back and share as a group and more examples will be
provided. (mixing ingredients for recipes, construction-concrete, water
-contains minerals, lemonade-sugar, lemon flavor, water, salad
dressings- oil and vinegar, soil, paints, sugar and water, hot chocolate
mixture and water, cereal and milk)
Formative Assessment #1
Since we just covered a new concept, I will do a quick formative assessment with
the class to see how we are doing with mixtures. I will ask them to show me
fingers to see how comfortable they feel.
4 = I understand, and I could explain this to someone else
3 = I can understand and do this by myself
2 = I need more examples and practice
1 = I don’t understand.

We will then continue with Pure substances and defining pure substances
Defining pure substances as (When all the atoms or molecules of a thing are made
up of the same thing - All made up of the same “stuff”)
- We will then try and brainstorm some ideas of pure substances to see if
students can come up with some ideas.
- We as a class will then go over examples of pure substances.
Back to Mixtures
- A mixture can be
- A solid and a solid
- A liquid and a solid
- Or a liquid and liquid
Then share examples of each

Transition – The teacher will explain that we will be moving on to an activity to

demonstrate our knowledge
The teacher will make to say “don’t move until I say go”
Learning Activity 2: 10/15 min
Demonstrating knowledge
 This activity will be a group work activity for students to demonstrate their
knowledge
Students will get into groups of 3 ( one group of 2)
Each group will get a piece of chart paper.
I want you to display on your chart paper (in any way you would like)
Subject/Grade: Grade 5 Chemistry Lesson/Date: Monday/Wednesday Nov 16/18 Time:
 1.) What are the 3 states of matter?
 2..) What is a mixture?
 3.) What is a pure substance?
 4.) Examples (can be drawings or words) of the types of mixtures we
covered..
 Solid and Solid – Liquid and Solid and Liquid and Liquid.
Walk around the room to ensure students are on task and if needed help students.

Transition: The teacher will call the group back together.

Let them know to put there chart papers on the U shape desk, markers or pencil
crayons away and to go back to their desks quietly.
Closure:
- When students are back at their desks, we will have a final discussion
- I will ask if any groups came up with some examples we did not mention
and that they would like to share.
- Finally, to close I will mention we will be doing an experiment on
Wednesday

Stage 4: Reflection
1. How the students responded to the lesson as planned and taught:
2. Specific strengths of the lesson plan and delivery:
3. Specific weaknesses in the lesson plan and delivery:
4. What must be addressed to improve this plan?
5. How I have grown from this teaching experience:
