PHOTOGRAPHY

BY EVAN MCMENAMIN
THE TASK

• My tutor has given me the task of researching different types of

photography and creating a presentation showing examples of
each type, along with describing the differences between each
photographic application.
LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

• Landscape Photography is one of the most popular

types of photography.

• It is the practice of taking photos outdoors in order to

capture the area or view of the photographer.

• The main goal is to bring the viewer into the scene.

• This photo shows a wide shot of a beach area also

taking advantage of the rule of thirds.
PHOTOJOURNALISM

• Photojournalism is a type of journalism which

uses photography alone to tell the story, as
opposed to text.
• This concept of journalism is popular as it only
shows the viewer a photo and leaves it to them
to interpret what is happening.
• Two different people could draw two different
conclusions from the same photo.
STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY

• Studio Photography is a type of photography

which is usually done indoors in a controlled
environment, where the photographer has full
control over lighting, background, costume etc.

• Studio Photography is used mostly for taking

photos of people like this one, but it can also be
used for other things like food or a product.

• This type of photography most commonly

features in magazines and promotional content.
PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

• Portrait Photography is a type of photography

which aims to capture the human form and
emotion. It is usually taken from above the
shoulders with the face in focus.

• The difference between this and Studio

Photography is that one is done in a fully
controlled environment and one is not.

• In this photo, the photographer has used a

low aperture to create a blurry background,
leaving the person as the clear subject.
ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

• Architectural Photography is a type of photography

which focuses on capturing a building or structure.

• These photos are usually shot using wide angle

lenses, as they allow a lot more to fit in the frame,
and slightly warp the image to make the subject
seem more prominent.

• In this photo, the photographer has chosen to

stand close to the building and point the camera up,
making it look as if its towering over the viewer.
EVENT PHOTOGRAPHY

• Event Photography is when a photographer

attends an event, such as a concert, and
documents it by taking photographs of it.

• This type of photography would mainly be used

by the event organizer for promotional purposes.

• In this photo, we see an ultra wide-angle shot,

which has let the photographer include the stage,
the crowd, the confetti and the sky. This photo
effectively captures the atmosphere.
ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY

• Advertising Photography is a type of photography that

consists of taking photos of a product or service.

• These photos are then used by the client for advertising

the product or service.

• The goal is to make the product or service look

appealing, which is done in this photo advertising a
Cider by placing the product in ice and capturing the
water drops on the bottle. This makes the drink seem
ice cold and refreshing.
FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

• Fashion Photography is when photography is

used for capturing images of clothing items or
outfits, for use in magazines or advertising.

• Most of the time these photos would be shot

in a studio where the photographer controls
the scene, but sometimes they may shoot
somewhere else.

• In this photo, the background is plain and red,

meaning the only subject to look at is the
model and the outfit she is wearing.
STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

• Street Photography is when a photographer aims

to capture the streets of a particular place, and
the things happening on them.

• This is one of the best types of photography for

capturing real-life situations and encounters. Stuff
that is difficult to capture without perfect timing
and framing.

• In this photo, the photographer managed to

capture a man playing a trumpet while walking
down the street, while also capturing a woman’s
immediate reaction to him.
ILLUSTRATION PHOTOGRAPHY

• Illustration Photography is an interesting type of

photography as it is a combination of both photos and
illustrating.

• A photographer will usually take a photo of a subject

and then edit it in post-production to add a drawing of
some sort which will usually hint at a deeper meaning.

• In this photo, a man is just looking at his phone.

However, after adding the illustration, it turns his phone
into this type of monster that is surrounding the man
and distracting him from the outside world.
SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY

• Sports Photography is a type of photography where

the goal is to capture a very specific moment in
time, of something that is happening during a
sporting event.

• This can be very difficult as it requires a fast camera

and fast photographer to capture the image at the
exact moment, or else miss the moment in time
itself.

• In this photo, we see a footballer being tackled. If

the photo wasn’t taken at that exact moment, we
would not see that tackle as it happened
