Checkpoint 11.

1
1. One end of a properly insulated copper rod of length 25.0 cm and cross-sectional area 2.00 cm 2 is
maintained at a constant temperature of 100 °C while the other end is at a temperature of 0 °C. If the
rod is in steady state, determine

(a) the temperature gradient along the rod [3 Marks]

(b) the temperature at a point 5.0 cm from the hotter end of the rod [3 Marks]

(c) the rate of heat flow through the rod [3 Marks]

[ For copper, thermal conductivity = 380 W m -1K-1]

2. The base area of a steel kettle of thickness 2.00 mm is 400 cm 2. The temperature of the water in the
kettle is always maintained at 100 °C. It is given that 750 g of water is vaporized in every 5.0 minutes of
heating by a flame. Determine the temperature of the flame. [ For steel, k = 46. 0 W m -1K-1; specific
latent heat of vaporization of water = 2270 kJkg -1] [3 marks]

3. Explain the difference between the mechanism of thermal conduction in metals and that in non-
metals. [5 Marks]

4. Explain the mechanism of heat conduction through an insulator. [4 Marks]

5. One end of a properly insulated copper rod of length 40.0 cm and cross-sectional area 5.00 cm 2 is
maintained at steam point while the other end is placed in ice at 0 °C. Determine the mass of ice that is
melted in 5 minutes if the rate of heat flow of the rod is in steady condition.

[ For copper, k = 380 W m-1K-1 ; specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 333 kJkg -1] [3 Marks]

6. The door of an oven has a piece of glass of dimensions 20.0 cm x 30.0 cm and thickness 0.50 cm.
When the interior of the oven is maintained at a temperature of 200.0 °C and the temperature on the
outside of the glass is at 25.0 °C, determine the quantity of heat that flows through the glass in 2
minutes.

[ For glass, k= 0.800 W m-1K-1] [3 Marks]

7. A properly insulated steel rod has a length of 55.0 cm and cross-sectional area of 2.25 cm 2/ One end
of the rod is maintained at a temperature of 0°C in ice and the other end is maintained at a temperature
of 100 °C. If the rate of heat flow in the rod is in steady state, how much ice will be melted in 10
minutes?
[ For steel , k = 46.0 W m-1K-1 ; specific latent heat of fusion of ice = 333 kJkg -1] [3 Marks]
