Looking Back - Moving Forward
As the year comes to a close, National University can
look back on a year of significant improvements,
generous donations and unique changes. A brief
summary of 2010’s highlights follow.
Donations
Standard Process donated $500,000 over the next five
years for upgrades to campus facilities beginning with
the biochemistry/neuroanatomy lab in Janse Hall.
Anabolic Labs and Standard Process donated pallets of
vitamins and supplements for use by NUHS in treating
the homeless and medically underserved.
Bequests
A $1 million bequest was received from the estate of a
grateful patient of an NUHS graduate in Michigan.
A Lincoln Chiropractic College graduate donated one-third
of a million dollars to National as part of his will.
Upgrades
New manual flexion tables were installed on the
Lombard campus for use in the Advanced Manual
Therapy Techniques class.
A new fully interactive classroom was created in
Janse Hall.
The last of the university-owned houses on the south
side of East Edward Street were demolished to provide

Renovations to Janse Hall’s main floor in Lombard continue
with the removal of lockers and addition of paneling.
Innovations
A post-traumatic stress disorder clinic offering free
acupuncture care for veterans has been established at
the NUHS Whole Health Center – Lombard. The clinic
is under the supervision of Frank Yurasek, PhD, MSOM,
assistant dean of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
Lombard faculty member, Daniel Richardson, PhD,
is conducting a 90-hour postgraduate course in
pharmacology in New Mexico for chiropractic
physicians wishing to prepare for licensure to prescribe
drugs from a limited formulary under the state’s
expanded scope of care regulations.
The NUHS Whole Health Center – Lombard has
welcomed an allopathic doctor, Sean Rardin, MD, to its
clinical staff. Dr. Rardin specializes in family practice
medicine and has a clinical interest in integrative
medicine.

The Art of Giving
Well, it’s that time of year
again.
I was sitting in the family
room reading the other night
when the phone rang… it
was my college alma mater
asking for my annual
donation. Now, my college
alma mater has an endowment fund that would
make most schools salivate, but it is a private
school and to help keep the tuition from going
into the heavens, many alumni and I make a
donation every year.
I am going to tell you a little secret — when I was
there, I was not their favorite son and some of the
professors should not have had a job (in my
humble, yet all knowing opinion). In any event, I
have decided that sometimes the professor pool is
a little shallow and maybe it wasn’t all the
school’s fault. So, I send them money every year.
I also make a donation to my chiropractic alma
mater. I am going to tell you a little secret —
when I was there I was not their favorite son, and
you can guess at the rest of the story. I also make
donations to my state and national associations.
Why? Because we are small in number, as
professions go, and if we all just think of
ourselves and not our educational and political
bodies, they will go away and we will soon follow.
Don’t misunderstand me, my college alma mater
still has some policies with which I disagree, and
it is possible that my chiropractic alma mater has
some policies with which I would disagree if I
knew of them. But that is all immaterial because
they both need our financial support, especially
in these difficult economic times.

1920s
The late Dr. Harold Solem (1923) of Evanston, Ill., is
the subject of a 20-chapter biography being written by
his daughter, Merilyn Muesing. Dr. Solem practiced as
a naturopath before graduating from National.
Drugless physicians were the enemy of allopathic
medicine back in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s. Dr. Solem
fought that battle for years and was even incarcerated.
Presumed Guilty: A Physician’s LIfelong Battle for
America’s Freedom of Medical Choice is the working
title of Ms. Muesing’s book. She is currently seeking a
third term on the board. Dr. Kruse has 21 years of
clinical experience and practices in the Metairie area.
Dr. Patricia Thompson (1982) of Neosho, Mo., served
as a research specialist at Cleveland Chiropractic
College in Kansas City immediately after graduation.
Later she owned practices in Tulsa, Okla. and
southwest Missouri. Dr. Thompson completed her
certificate in homeopathy from the Hahnemann
Academy of North America in 2005 and has lectured
on homeopathy and chiropractic in several states. She
writes a newspaper column, “On the Other Hand,”
Strengthening and Conditioning. The book offers new
ways to develop muscle power and body hardening
that can be applied to any of the combat sports, and
can be viewed at Wheatmark.com/bookstore. Dr. Gioia
is a certified chiropractic rehabilitation doctor (CCRD)
who practices in Algonquin, Ill. He currently resides in
McHenry with his two daughters, Brianna and Ellie. In

1940s
Ralph D. Sullivan, DC, FICC (1949) of Westville, Ill., is
retired from his practice. He practiced in Chicago from
1949 to 1987 and then in Westville until his retirement
in 2005 after 56 years.
1960s
Dr. Royce Newman (1967) of Rockford, Mich., a
longtime member of the Michigan Association of
Chiropractors (MAC), has sold his practice of 43 years
to Dr. Steven Mikulak, a former patient. According to
the MAC Journal, Dr. Newman had triple bypass
surgery in March and his recovery period spurred him
into finalizing the transition period. He plans to
continue to work at the clinic three days a week for a
couple of years to ensure a smooth transition for the
new owner. Dr. Newman joined the Michigan State
Chiropractic Society in 1967 and served the
association in numerous capacities including
president of the Michigan State Chiropractic
Association at the time of the historic merger of three
chiropractic organizations into the Michigan
Chiropractic Society (MCS) in 1988. He has received
numerous awards and citations including the MCS
Chiropractor of the Year, Pioneer Award and
Leadership Award. He and his wife, Pam, have been
married 46 years and have three children and
seven grandchildren.
1970s

Dr. Kimberly Watson (1985) of Longwood, Fla., is

September. “I was the old girl on the boat at 52+; most
of my team members were in their 20s and 30s. It was
great fun!” Dr. Watson still practices full time, has two

athlete and understands!
1990s
Dr. Brad Case (1993) recently authored
his first book, Thugs, Drugs and the War
on Bugs, Book I, in the Why We’re Sick
health care series. The 528-page volume
is an exposé of Western medicine and
the entire sickness industry in America.

Dr. Mark Kruse (1989) of Metairie, La., has been
elected vice president of the Louisiana Board of

article in the Michigan Association of Chiropractors
Journal, Dr. Gill said, “This has been as good for the
entire profession of chiropractic as it has been for me.
I can’t believe the number of people who approached
me over the weekend about what chiropractic has
done for them,” he said.
Dr. Anthony Gioia (1992) has published a book
entitled Weightlifting for Boxers: A Fighter’s Guide to
questions for future diplomate board examinations,
proctoring the examinations, and assisting in the
presentation of academic seminars. Dr. Denton
received her diplomate from the American Board of
Chiropractic Acupuncturists in January 2010, and is in
private practice with chiropractic orthopedist Dr. Max
L. Denton (1978) in Marion.
