Epistle 13. Serving the dead who have no one to care for
Since man is created in the image and likeness of God, it is necessary for
human nature, as an image, to carry the features of a prototype as far as
possible. Since the Divine in fact extends the Providence of His goodness to
everything created by
Him, it would be fair for people to imitate the providential action of
ineffable wisdom as far as possible. Therefore, we, as humble and
insignificant ones, reverently turning our eyes to the Divine and nourishing
a feeling of love for fellow tribesmen, join this pious society, since it was
established to take care of the
repositories of souls left without care, i.e. about the dead who, due to
poverty or because of wandering, are left without carrying and burial in
this reigning city (18). So, following the Divine example and annually
making a reasonable contribution from the gifts sent from God for the
purchase of funeral things necessary for the burial of others, we determine
the following in the Lord: when a deceased person is found on the way by
any of the members of the brotherhood, then he is with appropriate burial
accessories to carry out and lay in sacred tombs designated by you and
annually at the beginning of the indictment (19) and also repeatedly on the
days of Pentecost we perform a common commemoration of all those
buried, at the same time arranging a supper for our bodily consolation with
the money we have collected. However, we must not overstep the
established limits of a meal sufficient for this, so that by drinking or eating
too much we do not dishonor the commemoration being performed, but
with reverence we offer praise to God who made you worthy to celebrate
such a sacred holiday. And in this way, start eating a meal while reading
any spiritual book, so that even while taking food, you can go after what is
pleasing to the Lord, giving our unnecessary things to the poor and not
using idle words, jokes, and even more ridicule during the meal, since
reason forbids anyone Christian to do it. If it is necessary to speak, then
about what is decent for Christians, namely, about refraining from oaths,
having love among ourselves, speaking the truth with our lips, avoiding
deception and envy, doing good deeds if possible, visiting those in prison
and the sick, to be attentive to readings and to the primates of the church,
to honor each other, especially to the priests of God and monks, to accept
pilgrims, to completely abstain from fornication and drunkenness, to
preserve the Orthodox faith, to retire from communion with heretics.
For talking and caring for such matters can be a source of many benefits for
us. Approving and sympathizing with such divine institutions, we join this
society as we do with the Lord, for He says: He who did “to one of the least
of my brothers, did it to me” (Matthew 25:40), thus rejecting nothing of the
decreed, and so without neglecting anything. So, if any of the brothers is
noticed that he either did not pay attention to the lying dead man and did
not report to the leader in the brotherhood, or at the meal he spoke
unlawful things and did obscene things, angering God, the rector will
impose penance on him, deprivation of wine for three days and payment of
one piece of silver, and for the future time correction is required from him.
In addition, you must observe the following: when one of the brothers dies
an ordinary death, then all gather together and carry out his removal
and burial so that through this your beautiful community will receive
praise for the glory and honor of our generous God. So, joining this
brotherhood with faith and fear, we sign our names with the donation,
expecting our reward for this little zeal in the next century from the
Creator, the Righteous Judge of all, Jesus Christ, our Lord and God.
