CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1 Background of the Study

Applying make-up has been a trend nowadays especially to the majority of female
teenagers. High-school students get head over heels when it comes to cosmetic products. Some
may ask this, probably men, “Why do women wear too much make-up?” For beauty? For
confidence? , and the list of possible answers goes on and on.

According to the website theatlantic.com (2013), applying make-up is one of the best way
to make herself more attractive or appealing in the eyes of other people. But, the problem is that,
people tend to be terrible at imagining what other people find attractive.

So we, the researchers, conducted this research to find the reasons about the application of
excessive make-up inside the campus. We will perform our research inside the STI College
Marikina campus and we were going to select 5 female students from TOPE101A to be our
respondents. We would also want to know their point of view or their perceptions regarding this.
1.2 Statement of the Problem

This study will analyze the reasons of the selected senior high school students of STI
College Marikina towards excessive make-up application by this problem: Why do some senior
high school students of STI College Marikina applies excessive make-up?

1.3 Significance of the Study

The goal of this research is to know what triggers the excessive make-up application of
some female senior high school students. Also, this research aims to help the future researchers to
gain more knowledge about their future researches linked into the facial cosmetics use.

1.4 Assumptions of the Study

The assumptions made for this study were as follows:

• The participants evaluates that heavier make-up looks professional and glamorous when
applied.

• The interviewee answered the interview questions accurately.

• That the attitude of the respondents are stable.

• That the respondents rated some situation truthfully.

1.5 Scopes and Limitations of the Study

The researchers suggests possible limitations of the study:

• The participants of the study are female senior high school students of STI College
Marikina during the academic year 2015-2016.

• The reference of make-up in this study is limited in facial cosmetics.

1.6 Definition of Terms

The following definition was relevant to the study:

• Cosmetics/Make-up- “Articles intended to be rubbed, poured, sprinkled, or sprayed on,

introduced into, or otherwise applied to the human body or any part thereof for cleansing,
beautifying, promoting attractiveness, or altering appearance.” (Food and Drug Administration,
2009, Sec. 201.).

• Application- “The act of applying or use of a substance to be poured out into a surface.”
(Webster’s Universal Dictionary and Thesaurus, 2005.)

• Excessive - “An act of doing or applying something.” (Cambridge Dictionary,2006.)

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 Make-up/Cosmetics

According to Fann & Workman (2015), Make-up is femininity made tangible. Make-up
can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different women. For many, make-up is a way to
invoke one’s self. In this day and age, female students uses make-up to shields their faces from
natural and man-made elements such as the wind, sun, and pollutants while enhancing their innate
features. Female students of this day have come to rely upon their cosmetics to the point where
some will not leave their own homes without at least foundation on. Their dependence upon these
products has made people to think continuously about the conversion of make-up to be an essential
need for women. If used in moderation, make-up can be a morale boost to every girl who chooses
to wear it. It might give her the added confidence to talk to someone she admires, or prompt her
to be more outgoing and photogenic.

According to Poran (2002), Cosmetics serve as a sign of femininity in their symbolization

of stereotypical feminine values. They are often seen as a way to enhance feminine beauty ideals
and serve to help women to conform to our society’s beauty expectations. Also according to Cash
& Pruzinsky (2002), Cosmetics are often a tool used for social self-presentation and self-image
management. For some women, especially those of adolescent and college-age, wearing make-up
is partly due to their concern for their complexion and how they feel about themselves when others
look at their blemished skin. A blemish on the skin can lead to embarrassment, humiliation, or
other negative body-image experiences, which in turn can diminish self-esteem. Using cosmetics,
such as foundation and concealer, can help a woman hide facial blemishes and other abnormalities
which cause her to feel self-conscious. Such use of facial cosmetics may help to boost a woman’s
sense of confidence in her appearance, thus making her more self-assured overall.

2.2 Application of Make-up

According to Ogilvie (2005), as the application of make-up is an everyday habit for most
women within the present society, it is considered to be important because it has become an
essential need for the majority of women populace ranging from adolescent to collegiate period.
In some part, the application of make-up was meant to entice the opposite sex and it is practiced
by humans for centuries. One of the main reasons for women to apply make-up throughout the
centuries is for beautification purposes. Some researchers perceive that applying beautifying
substance into one’s body and appearance delivers elements of control over the interaction the
individuals receive from other people. Also, application of make-up gives boost of confidence
among its female users. The women of this day have come to rely upon their cosmetics to the point
where some will not leave their homes without any foundation on their bare-faces or even a streak
of eyeliner. The purpose of applying make-up was to highlight our inborn qualities that isn’t
showed

2.3 Excessive use of Make-up

According Fann & Workman (2015), women tend to apply excessive make-up, almost
every day, especially the teenagers. Girls believed that the more make-up they wear, the more
attractive they are. However, if these products are not utilized properly, there is a chance for it to
bring negative effects on our skin and/or in our health. If make-up has been excessively used too
often, it is not only other people’s perspective that will be affected but as well as the physical
health of its user.
Also, According to Charlton (2016), school is not a fashion parade. But because of some
female students who wore excessive make-up, the impression of the people around them changed.
There was an old saying “All too much can harm.”, and this saying is proved to be true. Using
excessive cosmetics can lead to physical ailments and in the worse scenario, even death. Excessive
application can also affect other people psychologically because not all of people are in the same
track of psychological pattern.
CHAPTER 3

METHODS AND PROCEDURE

3.1 Methods of Research

The method of research to be used in this study is qualitative method of research. This
method of research is appropriate because the data that will be gathered is not measurable yet it
can be analyzed through subjective analysis. According to Neville, C. (2013), qualitative research
focuses on experiences or data that cannot be expressed numerically. This method concentrates on
description and interpretation and it uses flexible research process. Also, it takes account of the
complex situation in the real world. And it studies behavior in natural setting.

3.2 Subjects of the Study

The subjects for the study are the 5 female student respondents that will be chosen from
the section TOPE101A. The said respondents are enrolled in the second term of S.Y. 2016-2017.
The reason for this senior high school section to be picked by the researchers is due to the majority
of this section being female. As well, tourism students have a very diverse fashion statement and
are obviously pampered.
3.3 Description of the Research Instrument

The research will be conducted through a structured interview. According to Cohen D.

and Crabtree B. (2008), in this type of interview, the interviewer asks each respondents the
same series of questions, which are prepared ahead of time. But there is only a limited set of
responses possible.

We, the researchers will conduct a structured interview. But before we proceed to our
interview, we will seek first the permission of Ms. Dalia Canteros through a letter of approval to
conduct an interview. A series of questions will be asked about the reasons of the selected female
Senior High School students of STI College Marikina regarding the excessive application of
make-up inside the campus. The questions that will be asked will be planned ahead of time. The
questions made by the interviewers will be checked by the Course Teacher, Mr. Nikko Capote of
the subject Practical Research 1.
