Activity No. 1/ week 2

Lesson: Materials in Contemporary Art


Most Essential Learning Competency: The learner identify the materials used in contemporary art.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
 describe how technology has redefined art.
 Make an artwork using selected materials creatively
 Explain the process of making one’s artwork.

CONCEPT NOTES:

Contemporary artists feel free to experiment to materials and used technology to explore possibilities.
What would you do with old textile, used plastic bottles, buri or abaca? How can indigenous materials found object,
recycled materials be combined to make an art work? This lesson describes the materials used by contemporary artists
in making their art work.
Contemporary artists salvage materials that can be recycled and make into creative forms. They can make
artworks that combine structures and wood interact with the wind to make music. An example is Chime Halo,
the hanging bamboo chimes that create a sound when blown by the wind done by Cavite- born artist Impy
Pilapil.
Los Baños, Laguna artists Alfredo and Esabel Auillizan’s Project Belonging gathered used object, clothes,
personal accessories, and compress them into cube shapes. These represent the boxes sent by Overseas
Filipino Workers to their family left behind. Moving abroad, the couple artists collected hundreds f rubber
slippers used by inmates in Singapore Changi prison and made these into artwork in the form of wings that

Isabel- aquilizan-2/). They combined various found objects to create a metaphor of everyday human life and
depict issues of identity, journey, migration and displacement

Some artist combine indigenous materials textile and mount these on a painted flat surface. Paintings
is no longer confined I canvas j=hung on the wall. They can be hung on the wall. They can also be found on
ceilings and floors. Some are done outdoors, like the Singapore ArtBridge which was painted by Batanes- born
artist lead the community or students in painting murals on walls to make a more pleasant environment and
to raise consciousness towards environmental protection.
