In this module, the learner will recognize the functions of each LESSONS AND COVERAGE
mathematical model that represents real- life settings. Formulate and solve
different problems. Apply a method that gives a proof and disproof in real- life

INTRODUCTION A function can also be defined as a set of ordered pairs in which no two ordered
pairs have the same first component but different second components.

FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPT
In this topic we shall review the fundamental concept behind and introduce the
conditional function which is also referred to as the piece-wise function.

FUNCTION

Consider two sets X and Y. A function f is a rule that assigns each


element of X to exactly one element of Y. This rule is formally
written as y = f (x).

A function f from A to B is a relation from A to B where to each a € A, there

DOMAIN and RANGE FUNCTIONS


Set X is the domain Df of the functions; it is the set of elements for which
the function is defined. The resulting values of y are called the range R f of the
function. The element x also referred to as the independent variable and y the
dependent variable.

Function generate a graph. The graph of the function is the set of ordered
pairs (x,y) such that y = f(x) . All function generate graph but not all graphs are
graph of function.

Note : for r5 and r6 they are not function.

Solution

LINEAR FUNCTION
A Linear Function is a function of the form f(x) = mx + b, m is the slope
of the line and b the y- intercept. Domain Df and range Rf is the set of real
number R. b.

Write f(x) = 3x2 -6x +2 in the form f(x) = a (x- h)2 + k and sketch the graph.

Solution:
f(x) = 3x2 -6x +2= 3 (x2 – 2x)+ 2
= 3 (x2 – 2x +1)+ 2 – 3
= 3 (x-1)2 -1
The vertex (h,k) is (1,-1) and the parabola opens up because a>0. The

QUADRATIC FUNCTION

A Quadratic Function of the form f(x)= ax2 + bx + c where a≠0, Its equation
in standard form is f (x) = a (x- h)2 + k

where (h,k) is the vertex of a parabola. If (h,k) is the vertex of the graph .

a. If a>0 , then Df = R and Rf = {y€ R such that y ≥ k}.


b. If a< 0, then Df = R and Rf = {y€R such that y ≤ k }.

POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION

A Polynomial is a function in the form
f (x) = an xn + an-1 xn-1 + ... + a1 x + a0
where a0 , a1 , are real numbers, an ≠0 and n≥0 is an
integer.

Example:
Sketch the graph of f (x)= x3 – x2 -6x

Solution:
Since the function is of degree3, it has the most 2 turning points. Let us find the
x-intercept of y = f (x) by solving the equation x3 – x2 -6x = 0 . This is easily done by
factoring

x3 – x2 -6x = x (x3 – x - 6) = 0
factoring the x-intercept are x= 0,3 and -2 by product rule
PIECE-WISE FUNCTION
x(x - 3)(x +2)=0 AB =0 A= 0 or B=0
A piece-wise function is a function in the form,
