Work at Height
Solutions

Collective and Personal

We need to agree terms ….

Working at Height

Hazard : has the means to cause harm

Risk : the chance of occurrence & consequence

Working at Height

Hazard = Fall from Height

Established Hierarchy

REMOVE
HAZARD

PREVENT Restraint
FALL

REDUCE Fall Arrest

CONSEQUENCE
Working at Height

Identify a fall hazard ..

……. issue a harness and lanyard (PFPE)

Difference described as Fall Factors

Fall Factor 2
Free Fall twice lanyard

Working at Height

Fall Factor 0

Fall Factor 0 …… Not often very practical !!

Working at Height
Fall Factor 1

H L+EA

< 4m ?
2m

1m
Fall Factor 1
Free Fall 1 x length of lanyard

Shorten lanyard … raise Anchor point

Reduce free fall, extension, clearance
Working at Height

What is this ? Restraint or Fall Arrest

New Hierarchy was needed ……

Working at Height

What can happen if

suspended in a harness?
• Blood pools in the legs
– We can all hold all our blood volume in our legs ..
– If the blood stays still for long … toxins build up
• Lack of oxygen to the Brain
– We all have three blood pumps ??
– Harness restricts blood return
• Loss of consciousness
– Movement maintains blood flow
– Use legs to stay conscious (push out, down, purchase, etc) .
• Death
– Once a faller has lost consciousness .. Death is only a matter of
time
3.5 – 5 – 8 -10 minutes (NASA, Fr, others)
Working at Height

Rescue is not easy

…….
Next big thing ?
or the Main Reason
NOT to use PFPE

Specify Harness and Lanyard solutions ONLY as a last resort
