Liquor was indeed a free roaming product in the Philippines, anyone above the legal drinking

age can purchase them, but newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte wants to limit this product.

From accidents, crimes and chaos that were caused and triggered by consumption of liquor, “The

reason he has this liquor ban because we have to work the next day. Nothing to do with denying

us our freedoms. When you go home, you can drink to your heart’s content in the privacy of your

homes,” Laviña (2016), Duterte’s spokesman.

To have further insight on the liquor banning it is said that at 1am sales of liquor will cease, “No

drinking beyond 1 o’clock.” Duterte (2016). Additionally, this also prohibits consumers to drink

on the streets outside of their homes.

Looking at this alone anyone would think that this won’t affect the liquor companies much “If

there is liquor ban, let’s say 1 a.m., I think consumption will not be reduced since people will just

drink faster in order to get home earlier.” Ramon Ang (2016), San Miguel Corporation’s

President and COO. Other companies are stating that the banning doesn’t pose a threat as their

products are usually consumed at home “We don't expect any immediate impact, there will be a

change of lifestyle but in terms of consumption, I don't think there will be an impact." Winston

Co (2016), President of Emperador Inc. "Pag sinabing bawal, lalong gagawin, masmaaga lang sa

bahay," Ang (2016).

Though bars and KTV’s are getting an opposite reaction compared to these companies. "Bars

typically run until dawn, so if he proposes a liquor ban, what will happen to us who primarily sell

alcohol to people? We are doing legitimate business," Marivic Ramos, karaoke bar owner. Some

other consumers were open and accepting to the banning "I agree since it will limit the excessive

drinking. Most of the time, people are drinking too much and are not conscious of their actions,"

Glen Decena, observer of heavy night drinking in his neighborhood. "I am sick of criminals and

want a stop to crime on the streets so I welcome this ban. Children need to be staying indoors at

night anyway for their safety. For a better Philippines!" Anzel Deschanel (2016).
