INMOL is one of the twelve medical centers established by Pakistan Atomic
Energy Commission ± PAEC across the country. INMOL is located in the
metropolitan city of Lahore, one of the most thickly populated cities of Pakistan
with a rich cultural heritage. INMOL is situated adjacent to SHEIKH ZAYED
Hospital facing the lush green lawns of Punjab University campus.

INMOL has been offering exemplary services in the fields of nuclear medicines
and cancer management since 1984. Equipped with modern instruments and state
of art facilities in both nuclear medicine and radiotherapy divisions, it caters for
about 60,000 patients per annum. Highly qualified and professionally devoted
physicians and doctors of Nuclear Medicines and Oncology are available at
INMOL. It also extends free medical aid to deserving patients that range from 80-
90% of the total patients attended. The International Atomic Energy Agency has
also declared it as the ``Center of Excellence`` and a referral center for Asia-
Pacific regional countries.

Over past 15 years, the INMOL has transformed into reputable establishment for
its highly professional and outstanding clinical performance and also as a teaching
institute for under and postgraduate medical students.

INMOL takes pride for its outstanding clinical performances, national and
international conferences and seminars, symposia and as a source and forum for
academic pursuit. INMOL has been organizing many IAEA training workshops,
clinical meetings, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine conferences and symposia.

INMOL had another bright feather in its cap is that IAEA has been regularly
sending doctors, scientists, technicians and allied personals for teaching and
training at INMOL.

INMOL is providing high quality medical services in the fields of nuclear
medicines and oncology with the availability of outdoor and indoor patient
treatment facilities, clinical and radioimmunoassay laboratory, diagnostic
radiology and state of art modern equipment for radiotherapy in cancer patients.

Our medical social officer assigned us to take the case histories of patients who
applied for Zakat fund. Zakat card is issued to those individuals who do not earn
more than 6500/- per month .Some of the examples of case histories which we did
are as follows:

Nasreen begum was suffering from Breast Cancer for last 1 year. Three months
before she was operated in Sheikh Zaid Hospital.

Her husband was a peon, one son was working and he was a taxi driver. His
income was very low and he could not bear the expenditure of treatment.

!5 Nasreen begum was very reluctant to talk to us. I healed her
which boosted up her courage. I took the case history. I filled the zakat form, my
M.S.O signed it and zakat card was issued to her.

Muhammad Nadeem was a cancer patient. 3 months ago it was diagnose that he
was on the last stage of cancer.

He was a very poor man. He was jobless and his all brothers were married and
lived apart from him. His family could not afford his expenditure for the treatment.

He was very depressed due to this dangerous disease and own economic
conditions. We build up his courage then we took his case history and we guided
the patient to the process of meditation. After the process of verification Zakat card
was issued to him.

We took almost more than 250 of the case histories of the deserving patients and
tried our best to help them in any aspect. These patients are already very depressed
and much tensed. Dealing them properly, listening to them patiently and talking to
them courteously make them much comfortable and for instant they also forget
their problems.

We observed the importance of sociology in practical life. The subjects who we
observed mostly and which helped us during our volunteer work are as follows:

Social work helped us in taking case histories of the patients those were admitted
in wards. During case histories we observed the problems of the patients that they
face and what their perceptions about those problems are. By using different
principles of social work we solved their problems.

It also helped us to do counseling of patients. Most of the people were suffering
depression and stress. We observed those things that made the patients aggressive.
We tried to identify those factors that involve in creating problems. We found that
inaccurate communication, misunderstandings between patients and doctors,
nurses and other staff. Patient`s negative thinking about the system and about his
or her own self also create stress for them.

It helped us to understand the health. It helped us to understand the cultural norms
and values of patients, visited social welfare department. We talked to them and
this thing makes us easier to communicate. We observed the attitude of the patients
and also sometimes the attitude of the staff towards society and system.

During our volunteer work we had the opportunity to do the practical experience of
research methods as when we took case histories of patients or when the
information was gathered about any department of hospital.

Dealing with the patients is the most important activity. Patients are sometimes
very lenient, sometimes very rude. But this volunteer activity helped us to control
our nerves in any situation.

In the end, to wrap up our volunteer work, firstly I we would explain that we had a
wonderful experience. We had a lot pleasure in doing such activity. We are so glad
that we joined such kind of area in which we helped the humanity. We felt
ourselves as helping hands for those patients who were suffering from different
diseases in the hospital.

work in groups instead of as an individual.
ëÊ Departments itself should refer the students to specific institutions neither
relying on their choice of interest.
