held under the auspices of The Center of Intelligence, Innovation & Performance Management
(IIPM). The 2nd Innovation & Knowledge Management (IKM) will be held at the Emperors Palace in
Johannesburg from the 26th - 28th of May 2011. The IKM conference aims to bring together. The
1st Innovation & Knowledge Management conference emphasized the relationship between
innovation and KM. The 2nd conference examines the impact of sustainable innovation and KM in
today’s business organizations and showcase the importance thereof in far more detail.

For 3 days policy makers, innovation leaders, business leaders, knowledge management practitioners
& experts, information officers, business executives, government officials, inventors and academics
will gather to bring together their vision, passion and expertise, to share their ideas, to discuss latest
trends and to focus on key challenges. They will jointly debate on how to streamline and transform
innovation into design, new products and services for the next generation, and how to drive into the
next decade through cutting edge innovation and knowledge Management. For detailed and up-to-

Sustainable Innovation continuously makes new knowledge in response to problems and also
enhances the capacity to make new knowledge in response to problems encountered in the past &
future. The 1st Innovation & Knowledge Management conference emphasized the relationship
between innovation and KM. The 2nd conference examines the impact of sustainable innovation and
KM in today’s business organizations and showcases the importance thereof in far more detail.

Innovation is tied to knowledge. Innovation starts with knowledge, it elaborates that knowledge or
generates new knowledge, and produces knowledge as the final outcome. Thus, knowledge is the
engine of innovation. Furthermore, innovation is directly linked to people who realise new knowledge
or extend existing knowledge. Without such people there would be no innovation. People are the
carriers of knowledge.

Their culture and society is largely immaterial, although the importance of background is less strong
for technological innovation than for non technological innovation. If the influx of people from other
cultures is too large, the role of people as carriers of knowledge is affected. Foreign researchers who
develop knowledge will return to their home countries after some time.

This means that knowledge will flow away, which creates problems regarding the continuation of
education in the education-giving countries. As we will discuss, knowledge is not a free-floating
commodity, as economists believe. Knowledge, without human beings, socially and culturally
embedded, is not possible. Innovation is also a process. Besides creating and producing knowledge, it
also requires that knowledge is transferred, available, accessible and usable.

Firms have used technology as an engine of progress since at least the time of the Industrial
Revolution, which gave remarkable ways to marshal the physical world for human benefit.
Innovation, which we use to mean the successful implementation of new developments and ideas,
depends upon much more than technological advance, but technology has consistently provided the
opportunities from which to make and sell better goods and services and to do so more cleanly and
more safely.

Innovation is a key corporate initiative in most firms, yet is often unsuccessful. While it is relatively
easy to generate ideas, most firms lack processes to evaluate ideas and move them on to new
product or service development hence that is when Knowledge Management comes in.

Another difficulty many corporates face is determining which ideas will have market acceptance and
viability. Evaluation criteria are often generated on a case by case basis with little consistency or
knowledge of the market or opportunity. Additionally, innovation does not have its own standard
evaluation metrics, so often a traditional business case or other discrete metrics are used to evaluate
ideas. Since ideas often do not have the supporting data, research or intelligence that an existing
product or service has, they are frequently ruled out.

After the success of the 1st Innovation & Knowledge Management (IKM) conference the 2nd aims to
bring together policy makers, innovation leaders, knowledge management experts, business leaders,
government officials, inventors and academics to examine the impact of sustainable innovation and
KM in today’s business organizations and showcase the significance thereof in far more detail.

The conference will explore the theme: “Stimulating Sustainable Development, scaling up for
success - The Role of Innovation & Knowledge Management”. The management of innovation is,
however, not so well established. Governments are paying attention to the development of national
systems of innovation, at the same time as business is just developing innovation practice within
firms. How then is innovation practice faring in these difficult times? Are business organizations
paying more attention to the strategy and practice of innovation, or are they instead, focussing upon
the essentials of Knowledge Management?

Despite an enormous amount of innovative thinking in South Africa, questions remain as to how this
can be transferred into action. The Innovation & Knowledge Management Conference 2011 will
address these questions with particular emphasis on current cutting edge developments in the South
African and global innovations landscape. Offering a rare and valuable insight into the current and
future achievements of research and development bodies as well as private initiatives from
established enterprises.

Knowledge Management (KM) is a discipline concerned with the analysis and technical support of
practices used in an organization to identify, create, represent, distribute and enable the adoption and
leveraging of good practices embedded in collaborative settings and, in particular, in organizational
processes. Effective knowledge management is an increasingly important source of competitive
advantage, and a key to the success of contemporary organizations, bolstering the collective
expertise of its employees and partners.

As custodians of the Innovation & knowledge imparted on future leaders in the business world, IIPM
has taken up the challenge to organise this conference yearly. We are more than confident that this
conference brings brilliant information sharing endeavour as it targets the entire African Continent and
the world at large. We trust that the programme planned for Innovation & Knowledge Management
Conference 2011 will be appealing to a broad spectrum of organisations and businesses.
