Abstract:
In this project, I described about the general structural design applied on crude oil ship’s structure .
Here, I first design a scantling for the structure and then used a local analysis approach describing how
lateral pressure are distributed to the ship’s internal framework and allowable stresses for the different
structural members. After that using von misses providing global hull girder loads and their impact on
longitudinal strength had been discussed.
Finally, according to the load and its impact, I modelled and some important requirements dimensioning
tertiary, secondary and primary strength components.
PATHAK PHARINDRA
S203000
Scantling:
Plate: Plate in ship building is generally a rectangular shaped steel (material) with certain thickness. In
this question,
Plates are given all around the ship to provide water and weather tightness and also provide longitudinal
strength to the ship. These plates are prone to bending when they are subjected to lateral pressure.
Also, plates are vulnerable to buckling when they are subjected to compressive or shear. So, plates here
are designed to withstand these pressure cases without failure. So, to sustain these loads, plate
thickness needs to be very high. But increasing the thickness of ship won’t be good option so as an
alternative, a combination of stiffener and girders should be added to plate panel to withstand all these
provided loads.
Stiffeners:
Stiffeners are a kind of beams used in ships which increase the load bearing capacity of the plate they
are attached and avoid that plate structure from bending. Stiffeners are secondary structural plates
which are attached to the plates to stiffen them against any kind of out of plane deformation by external
loads. The plate of the stiffeners which is connected to the plates are called web. The plate of parts
connected to the web at its other end could be called as flange.
The stiffeners are used to control the local buckling of plate when they are subjected to compression of
shear. The reason of adding stiffener to the plate is already discussed above in plate section.
S203000
Angle stiffener
The stiffeners are designed to avoid any kind of distortion or crack. For this, a specific ratio between
height of web, thickness of web and flange only after the research but in this assignment, I assumed by
my own.
The extend of stiffeners are limited between the adjacent primary members. For longitudinal stiffeners,
which is described here in the above scantling , these longitudinal stiffeners on deck are continuous
only after transverse girders or web.
Girders/ Web:
Girders or Web are primary structural plates which are attached to the plates to stiffen them against
global load and bending moments. These members carry the loads from secondary members or
stiffeners are then transfer to adjacent primary members. The load transfer in ship structure is
maintained mainly by these girders and webs.
S203000
Girders
The girder at center of bottom plate is larger among all the girder called as Keel Girder of size 650 X 16/
200 X 20.
Frame:
These are the primary supported members which prevent the shell and deck plating of ship from
collapsing.
The plate is subjected to a lateral pressure. The pressure here is from sea water, crude oil pressure. The
plat itself can’t carry load; hence it has to be stiffened. The stiffener, acting as support for the plating,
also needs to be supported to prevent yielding and collapsing. Here, girder are support for stiffener and
supported by longitudinal panels.
Unbalanced lateral pressure acting on the panel field is absorbed and distributed in the following
pattern:

Von-Misses Hypothesis:
Using Von-Misses hypothesis to evaluate an equivalent stress to check against the material yield limit.
This hypothesis is based on energy considerations and concludes with that a material will yield if the
strain energy for a multiaxial state is equal to the strain energy for a uniaxial state.
If σx = bending stress in x-axis
σy = bending stress in y-axis
σz = bending stress in z-axis
τxy = shear stress in xy plane
τyz = shear stress in yz plane

Assumption:
• All the scantling dimensions are assumed.
• Half symmetric mid ship section is considered for calculation for inertia and first moment of
area.
• All the measurement for the centroid of scantling is done in AutoCAD.
• Chine pressure doesn't affect bottom pressure.
• The frame is a simply supported beam structure
• The stiffener is a simply supported beam structure.
• The plate is a simply supported beam structure.
• Points on plates that are selected for Von-Misses stress are at maximum bending moment point
,so shear force is zero ,thus the shear stress.
S203000
For local pressure on exposed deck, referring to DNVGL, minimum local pressure on exposed deck is
34.3 KPa .So, here I assume 35 KPa on deck.
Calculation of Stress:
Primary stress:
Due to hull girder, there exist primary stress which can be calculated using :
My
𝜎= , where M= bending moment ( Sagging case is considered in this assignment as it gives
I
maximum bending moment and shear force value)
y = eccentricity i.e, distance of the point of consideration from neutral axis.
I = Moment of inertia
σ = Primary bending stress
And,
VQ
𝜏= , where V= shear force ( maximum at 90 m from aft and value considered as zero at midship)
It
Q = first moment of area of that section
t= thickness of that section
I= moment of inertia of whole section.
𝜏 = shear stress
Secondary stress:
Due to transverse frame, there exist secondary stress which can be calculate as:
My
𝜎= , where
I
M=bending moment calculated as
M=p*a*b2/8 (Simply supported beam as assumed in this assignment)
a= frame spacing
b=girder spacing
p= net pressure i.e, difference of hydrostatic pressure and crude oil pressure at bottom
= local pressure on exposed deck as per DNVGL (Part-3 Chapter-4 Section 5)
And,
VQ
𝜏 = , where
It
V=shear force calculated as
V=p*b/2 (Simply supported beam)
Tertiary stress:
Due to longitudinal stiffener, there exist tertiary stress which is calculated using:
My
𝜎= , where
I
PATHAK PHARINDRA
S203000
And,
VQ
𝜏 = , where
It
V=shear force calculated as
V=p*b/2 (Simply supported beam)
Also,
Here I consider the point on the deck between the stiffeners at the maximum bending moment location.
So, it will experience primary bending stress from the hull girder while the primary shear stress is zero.
Since stiffeners and frame are attached to the deck plate, they will also contribute to the stress on it.
As we are talking about the exposed deck so local pressure comes to action and from DNGVL (Part-3,
Chapter-4, Section-5) I got minimum 34.3 KN/m2 pressure exerted on the exposed deck mid-ship
PATHAK PHARINDRA
S203000
section. So, I consider 35 KN/m2 as pressure on exposed deck. Due to this load, the transverse frame
exerts secondary bending and shear stress while the stiffener exerts tertiary bending and shear stress.
When we come to deal with plate, it also bends so there comes an action for plate bending in both x and
y-direction.
I here first considered both x and y-directional stress as positive and in the next slot taking them as
negative depending on the plate section i.e, outer or inner.
The calculation regarding these stresses are attached as annex while the von misses calculation is
tabulated below:

S203000
Since stiffener itself give tertiary stress as described above while due to plate attachment and
longitudinal stiffener system, hull girder also contribute as a primary stress to the stiffene r.
It is assumed that transverse frame affect only attached plate not the stiffeners so, no secondary stress
present.

PATHAK PHARINDRA

Here, in this assignment i consider transverse frame system with dimension already described in above
scantling section of frame.
Since its nature is transversal so hull girder does not exert any pressure on it while stiffener play no role
on stress as well.
So due to frame itself, it exerts secondary stress both bending and shear whose value is used in Von-
Misses calculation which is tabulated below:
Stresses Σx Σy Τ
Primary 0 0 0
Secondary 0 98.83 1.78
Tertiary(Stiffeners) 0 0 0

PATHAK PHARINDRA
S203000
Here I consider the point on bottom plate between the stiffeners at the location pf maximum bending
moment. So, it will experience primary bending stress from the hull girder while the primary shear stress
is almost zero.
Since stiffeners and frame are attached to the deck plate, they will also contribute to the stress on it.
As , we know that bottom plate is exposed to sea water from surrounding and it has crude oil in interior
portion, it exerts the net pressure that’s is the difference of hydrostatic pressure and crude oil pressure.
Due to this load, the transverse frame exerts secondary bending and shear stress while the stiffener
exerts tertiary bending and shear stress.
When we come to deal with plate ,it also bend so there comes an action for plate bending in both x and
y-direction. As we are going to consider both plate section, here I first consider as both x and y-
directional stress as positive and in next slot taking them as negative.

Conclusion:
One can observe from the Von-Misses calculation of each point, von-misses stress is less
than yield stress of steel(i.e, 235 MPa) so those points are safe and similar scantling can be
preferred.
