It is a monument built to commemorate the sesquicentennial (150th)
birth anniversary of the Philippines’ National Hero and the greatest
son of Calamba, Dr. Jose Rizal. It was cited as the tallest Rizal
Monument in the world before former Laguna Governor E.R Ejercito
Estregan inaugurated the 26 ft bronze Rizal Monument in Santa Cruz,
Laguna.

The statue depicts Rizal holding a book in his right hand and is made
of bronze. It stands 22 feet (6.7 meters) which symbolizes the 22
languages and dialects Rizal mastered during his time such
as Spanish, English, German, Japanese, Chinese and others. It is
placed on top of a 2.8 meter podium consisting of 15-step stairway
which symbolizes one decade since Rizal was born in 1861. It also has
a granite pedestal of 7.87 feet and a 13.12 feet circular stairway base.
The monument's total height is 43 feet (equivalent to a four-storey
building) and its weight is 2 tons.

The Rizal monument in Luneta consists of the bronze
sculpture of Jose Rizal, while an obelisk serves as a
backdrop mounted on a pedestal to which Rizal’s
remains are stored. A plaque is secured to the
pedestal and includes the message “To the memory of
Jose Rizal, patriot and martyr, executed on
Bagumbayan Field December 30 1896.”The perimeter
of the monument is patrolled 24/7 by The Philippine

Our national hero is of great influence — not
only in the Philippines, but also globally. It’s
unsurprising that several countries celebrate
Dr. Jose Rizal’s life through the numerous
monuments around the world erected in his
honour. One of the most famous Rizal
monuments stands in Madrid, Spain. This city
was where Rizal lived for almost a decade after
finishing medical school at the University of
Santo Tomas. To pay homage to the life of our
national hero, the city commissioned Filipino
sculptor Florante Caedo to build an intricate
bronze statue of Rizal.
