TOTAL SYSTEM OVERVIEW

2-1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains an overview of the TOTAL system and a description of the devices that
make up the system.

2-2 SYSTEM OVERVIEW

TOTAL is a modular instrumentation system composed of up to ten, independent devices that
monitor, record, display and print drilling data. The individual system devices are linked via a
communications network, called T-POT

A typical TOTAL system is shown in Figure 2-1. It consists of six devices: System DAQ, Slave
DAQ, Visulogger XC Graphics Display (VXC)*, PC Workstation (PCW)*‘, T-POT Interface Module
(TIM) and DAQ/SPECTRUM Interface (DSI). These devices and the T-POT netwotk are

The System DAQ is the primary device in any TOTAL system. It has four main functions:
. receives and processes raw data from up to 23 analog and 14 digital sensors and
places the processed data on the T-POT network for access by system devices
. communicates with the system devices to send and receive data
. provides output to drive up to 14 instruments, such as chart recorders, meters, relays
and alarms
. maintains all configuration and calibration information in non-volatile memory

2-2-2 Slave DAQ

Slave DAQs are used if the 23 analog sensors and/or 14 digital input/output connectors of the
System DAQ are not adequate. Slave DAQs gather and process raw sensor data and place the
processed data, in engineering units, on the T-POT network for the System DAQ to use. This
processed data can also be used by the Slave DAQ digital connectors to drive other instruments
(i.e. chart recorders, etc.).
As Table 2-1 shows, a TOTAL system can currently support up to three Slave DAQs.

2-2-3 Vlsulogger XC Graphics Display Q/XC)

The Visulogger XC Graphics Display is a monitor, with attaching keypad, used to display and
monitor sensor data. Via the keypad, the operator can select and edit display screens, set alarm
limits and control channel functions (i.e. activate/deactivate channels, zero channel values, etc.).
The keypad also controls an alarm horn that sounds when alarm limits are exceeded. Each VXC
can support three, 9- or 12-inch slave monitors, which duplicate the VXC display.

As Table 2-1 shows, a TOTAL system can currently support up to two VXCs.

2-2-4 PC Workstation (PCW)

The PC Workstation is an IBM-compatible personal computer and monitor, with optional
printer/plotter, that is used to run the Visulogger Interface Program (VIP). With VIP, the PCW can:
. store data from the System DAQ in data files on the PC hard drive
. compare data values for each channel to user-specified alarm limits
. allow DAQ data to be accessed at the rig site and at other locations (master sites)
. display current (real-time) and recorded (historical) data on the monitor and on paper
. reformat data files on the hard drive for import to spreadsheet or database
applications programs
A TOTAL system can currently support up to three PCWs (Table 2-l).

2-2-5 T-POT Interface Module (TIM)

The TIM converts data from the DAQ into a format that a printer/plotter can read and then
forwards the formatted data to the printer/plotter. As Table 2-l shows, a TOTAL system can
currently support up to two TIMs.

MANUAL 60-20 TOTAL SYSTEM OVERVIEW

2-2-6 DAQ/SPECTRUM INTERFACE (DSI)

The DSI converts data from the System DAQ into a format that can be read by a SPECTRUM
1000 display panel, SPECTRUM-type display panel (i.e. Mud Watch) or VIP (Visulogger Interface
Program) software and then forwards the formatted data to the device. It also converts data
entered using the SPECTRUM display panel keypad and forwards the converted data to the
System DAQ.

Currently, up to three DSls can be supported by a TOTAL system (Table 2-1).

2-2-7 T-POT Network

The T-POT network allows communication between the System DAQ and all other TOTAL system
devices. It is a time-division, multiplexed, single-wire, frequency-shift-keying (FSK)
communications media. The network uses a unique protocol developed specifically for the tasks
associated with TOTAL. Each device connected to the network has an assigned identification
number to ensure that data records are routed correctly.

2-3 TOTAL SYSTEM DEVICE DISTRIBUTION

The maximum number of devices that can currently be supported by a TOTAL system is ten. The
distribution of these devices is presented in Table 2-1.

3-3-l Barrier/CGA Assembly

All signals from the T-POT network are routed through the Barrier/CGA assembly. This assembly
also routes signals to slave monitors and to/from the VXC keypad. Voltage and current levels of
signals leaving the barrier assembly through the bulkhead connectors are intrinsically safe.

3-3-2 VXC Communications Board

This board receives intrinsically safe T-POT signals from barrier assembly, converts them to llL
signals and passes them to the 286 processor board.

3-3-3 Processor Board

The 286 processor board receives and processes TTL signals from the VXC communications
board and transmits the processed signals to the EGA video interface board.

3-3-4 Solid State Disk Board

This board holds two EPROM’s that contain the VXC application software. It also holds the
operating system software and RAM chips for archiving data.

3-3-5 EGA Video Interface Board

The EGA video interface board receives processed signals from the 286 processor board and
converts them into video signals for screen display. The video signals are then sent to the CRT
chassis assembly and, in some cases, to barrier boards and slave monitors.

3-3-6 CRT Chassis Assembly

This board receives video signals from the EGA video interface board and drives the CRT display.
The contrast adjust dial is part of this board; turn the dial clockwise to brighten the display and
counterclockwise to dim the display.

Hazardous voltages are present inside the monitor. Exercise extreme care
when adjusting contrast.

3-3-7 Monochrome Monitor Power Supplies - 12 VDC and 5 VDC

The monochrome monitor has a 12 VDC power supply and a 5 VDC power supply. The 12 VDC
power supply converts 110 VAC to 12 VDC. This is used by the Barrier/CGA assembly to drive
the keypad and slave video signals. It is also used to drive the CRT chassis assembly.
The 5 VDC power supply converts 110 VAC to 5 VDC to drive all components except those that
require 12 VDC (see above).

3-3-8 Color Monltor Power Supply

The color monitor has one power supply that converts 110 VAC to 12 VDC and 5 VDC.
Paragraph 3-3-7 describes how this power is distributed.

3-4 PURGE COMPONENTS

The interior of the VXC can be purged with dry nitrogen or other approved inert gases for safe
operation when hazardous gases are present (Groups C and D, Class I Division 1 and Class I
Division 2). Figure 3-2 shows the pressure switch and purge indicator board, inside the VXC
monitor. Figure 4-11 shows the purge features located on the VXC front and rear panels.

3-4-l Pressure Switch

This switch measures the pressure difference between the inside and outside of the VXC monitor.
If the internal pressure exceeds the external pressure, normal purge conditions exist and the
switch remains closed, signaling the purge indicator board to allow the green LED to blink. If the
interna! pressure is less than or equal to the external pressure, abnormal purge conditions exist
and the switch opens, signaling the purge indicator board to allow the red LED to blink.

3-4-2 Purge Indicator Board

This board reads the pressure switch signal and then allows either the green LED (normal purge
conditions) or red LED (abnormal purge conditions) to blink. It is battery backed, so that if AC
power is lost, the appropriate LED will continue to blink.

3-4-3 Purge Indicators

Two LED indicators are located in the upper right wmer of the VXC screen (Figure 4-11):
l Green Indicator - If the green indicator is blinking, normal purge conditions exist;
i.e., the internal pressure is greater than the external pressure.
. Red Indicator - If the red indicator is blinking, abnormal purge conditions exist; i.e.,
the internal pressure is less than or equal to the external pressure.

3-4-4 Purge Rate Indicators

There are two purge rate indicators on the front of the monitor (Figure 4-11):
. High Purge Rate Indicator.- indicates the rate of inert gas flow into the VXC
monitor, from 0 to 100 scfh.
. Low Purge Rate Indicator - indicates the rate of inert gas flow into the VXC monitor,
from 0 to 1 scfh.

3-65 Flow Rate Adjust Knobs

These knobs are used to regulate the rate of inert gas flow into the VXC monttor.

3-4-6 Purge Inlet

Inert gas flows into the enclosure through the purge inlet.

3-4-7 Relief Vent

The relief vent allows the inert gas to escape from the monitor during purge.

3-4-8 External Pressure Port

The external pressure port is that part of the pressure switch that provides the external air
pressure reference to the pressure switch.

3-5 THE VXC KEYPAD

The VXC keypad (Figure 3-4) is used to select and edit screen displays, set alarm limits and
control channel functions (i.e. activate/deactivate channels, zero channel values, etc.). It is also
used to route channel alarm control signals from the VXC to the alarm horn wntrol box and to
turn the alarm horn ON or OFF. It is intrinsically safe and powered by 12 VDC, which is supplied
by the VXC. Refer to Paragraph 5-4 for instructions on operating the keypad.

Figure 3-4. VXC Keypad

3-6 ALARM HORN CONTROL BOX

The alarm horn control box (Figure 3-5) houses an alarm horn and horn control circuitry. All
electrical components in the control box are sealed, to prevent an electrical spark hazard.
However, it should always be mounted in a nonhazardous area, where adequate air circulation
will prevent a hazardous accumulation of combustible gases.

The control box is powered by 110 VAC and is connected to the VXC keypad, which turns the
alarm ON and OFF. Alarm control signals for each channel are routed from the VXC to the
control box through the keypad.

4-l 1 STEP SEVEN: PURGE THE VXC MONITOR

If the monitor is installed in a Class I Division 1 area, a Type X purge is required. lf lt is installed
in a Class I Division 2 area, a Type 2 purge is required. Dry nitrogen is recommended for
purging; however, rig air or any other inert gas may be used, provided it meets with local safety
code requirements and is clean and dry.
Refer to Figure 4-l 1 and follow the steps below to purge the monitor.

1. If rig air or instrument air is used, use an instrument air

filter-regulator assembly (PN 270244-l 03, Manual No. 26-58), with
a setting of 10 psig (69 kPa). When 10 pslg is obtained, proceed to
Step 7.
If dry nitrogen is used, place a dry nitrogen cylinder, with purge
system, as close to the monitor as possible, without hindering rig
operation and proceed to Step 2.
2. Secure the cylinder to a rigid part of the rig structure.
3. Connect a length of nylon tubing from the flow rate meter on the
nitrogen tank to the purge inlet on the monitor rear door.
4. Ensure that the monitor faceplate is securely fastened to the
enclosure and that the rear door is securely closed.
5. Ensure that the gas regulator valve on the nitrogen tank is OFF.
Then slowly open the nitrogen cylinder valve until the valve is
completely open.

6. Open the gas regulator valve on the nitrogen cylinder until a 10 psig
(69 kPa) reading is observed on the outlet pressure gauge.
7. Fully open the Low Flow Rate Adjust knob. Turn the High Flow
Rate Adjust knob until the high purge rate indicator shows a flow
rate of 75 scfh. (The low purge rate indicator should read
maximum.)
8. Maintain the 75 scfh purge rate for 7 minutes. Air is exhausted from
the monitor enclosure through the relief vent on the rear door.
9. After purging at 75 scfh for 7 minutes, ensure that the green LED
(normal purge indicator) is blinking. Then use the monitor’s high
flow rate adjust knob to reduce the flow rate until the high purge rate
indicator shows minimum flow, or near minimum flow. The green
LED must continue to blink when the high purge rate indicator
shows minimum flow, or near minimum flow; if the red LED blinks
during adjustment, increase the flow rate.

6-2-l Channel Data

Six VXC screen types are available for displaying channel data. As Figure 5-I shows, channel
data can be displayed numerically, in horizontal bar graphs and in vertical strip charts. Refer to
Paragraph 5-3 for a description of how channel data is displayed on each of the six VXC screen
types.

6-2-2 Status Lines

As Figure 5-I shows, each VXC screen contains two status lines.
Status Line 1 is displayed along the top of the screen. It contains the five fields described below:
Screen Name -the name assigned to the screen using the VXC ADD SCREEN function.
Note that screen names can also be assigned using TOTAL Configuration and
Calibration Software.

Rig Activity - Rig activities that are configured for the VXC are displayed here. A rig activity
is a category, such as drilling or tripping, under which related screens might be stored
so that only screens pertinent to the current rig activity are displayed. For example,
only screens displaying channels related to drilling might be stored under DRILLING.
Primary Channel - The value of the primary channel is displayed in the top center of all VXC
screens. The Primary Channel is specified from the VXC Device Configuration
screen of the TOTAL Configuration and Calibration Software (Manual 60-40).
Bar Graph Labels - tells which label (Limits, Marks, Peaks or Scales) is currently displayed
above the horizontal bar graphs
Date/Time - the current date and time are displayed on all VXC screens.

Status Line 2 is displayed along the bottom of each VXC screen, above the Menu Bar. It contains
the three fields summarized below:

Master Horn Status - tells whether the master horn is ON or OFF. If the master horn is OFF,
then no alarms will sound, even if individual channel horns are turned ON and
channel data values exceed the alarm limits.

Message Bar - displays the version number and date of VXC software. If communication
problems arise between the VXC and DAQ, a message is displayed here.

Channel Alarm Status - displays ALARMS ACTIVE if any channel in the system is in alarm;
if no channels are in alarm, then ALARMS INACTIVE is displayed. To see which
channels are in alarm, press the ALARM PAGE key on the VXC keypad (Table 5-3).

6-l INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains routine maintenance and troubleshooting procedures for the VXC. For
reference, this chapter contains illustrations showing the proper jumper settings for the 286
processor board, solid state disk board and EGA video interface board (Figures 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3,
respectively) and interface connections for monochrome and color VXC monitors (Figures 6-4
and 6-5, respectively). Figure 4-3 shows dip switch settings on the VXC communications board.

6-2 ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

Routine maintenance is minimal for the VXC monitor and associated devices. Check the interior
of the VXC monitor periodically for corrosion and replace the corrosion inhibitor as needed.
Ensure that all devices are kept clean and protected from weather and other adverse conditions.

6-3 TROUBLESHOOTlNG
The following paragraphs provide general troubleshooting procedures for the VXC monitor and
related devices.

6-3-l General Checks

Field experience indicates that minor repairs can correct 90% of all electronic equipment failures,
avoiding replacement of major assemblies. Complete the following checks before performing the
more extensive troubleshooting procedures.
. Verify that the required primary power is supplied to the system (See Table 3-l).
l Check for loose, crushed, frayed, cut or otherwise damaged cables.
. Verify that all system components are properly interconnected and seated in their
mating connector or socket (See Chapter 4 - Installation).
. Before replacing the 286 processor board, solid state disk board or EGA board, refer
to Figures 6-l through 6-3 to ensure that jumpers are properly connected.
. Before replacing VXC communications board, refer to Figure 4-3 to ensure that all
dip switches are properly set.

Ensure that AC power is OFF before opening the VXC monitor in a

hazardous area and before removing or replacing any parts.

6-3-2 Fault Isolstlon Table

Table 6-l lists possible malfunctions, their probable causes and corrective actions for restoring
the VXC monitor and associated devices to normal operating condition.

6-3-3 Procedure for Testing Coaxial T-POT Cable

If communication between the DAQ and VXC is interrupted, it may be due to shorts or opens in
the coaxial cable connecting the two devices. The recommended procedure for detecting shorts
or opens is presented below:
1. Check for a short in the cable by disconnecting the cable from both
the DAQ and VXC.
2. Use a digital muttimeter (See Related Tools and Test Equipment) to
take a reading between the cable’s center pin to its outer shell. If it
reads “open”, with the meter set on “Ohms”, the cable is not
shorted. If not, the cable is shorted and must be replaced.
3. To check for an open, use a small piece of bare wire and short the
cable from the center pin to outer shell at one end.

4. At the opposite end of the cable, set a digital multimeter on “Ohms”

and take a reading between the cable’s center pin and outer shell.
If a low reading is obtained, the cable is good. If it reads “open”, the
cable is damaged and must be replaced.

6-3-4 Procedure for Testing Fuse

Follow the steps below to determine if the fuse is blown:
1. Disconnect AC power from the monitor; then open the monitor rear
door.
2. Remove the fuse from the AC line fitter harness.

3. If the fuse appears blown (i.e., broken filament, darkened glass),

replace it. If it does not appear blown, go to Step 4.
4. Use a digital mutimeter to take a reading across the fuse by placing
a lead at each end of the fuse and setting the meter to “Ohms”. If
the reading is “open”, the fuse is bad and must be replaced.

6-3-5 Procedure for Testing VXC Monltor Power Supplles

To test the monochrome or color monitor power supplies, refer to Figure 6-4 or 6-5, respectively,
and follow the steps below:

The VXC monitor must be in a non-hazardous area before performing the

following procedure.

1. With the AC power connected, open the monitor rear door.

2. Use a digital multimeter to take a reading of the power supply
output voltage by setting the meter to VDC and placing one lead at
the appropriate test point (5 VDC or 12 VDC) on J8 and setting the
other lead to ground.

3. If the required voltage is not displayed, the power supply is faulty

and must be replaced.

Page 6-4 August 21,1992

MANUAL 60-20 MAINTENANCE

6-3-6 Procedure for Testing lslatrol

To test the islatrol, follow the steps below:

The VXC monitor must be in a non-hazardous area before performing the

following procedure.
1. With the AC power connected, open the monitor rear door.
2. With a digital multimeter set on “Ohms”, take a reading by placing a
lead on each of the two “Line In” terminals. If the meter reads
“open”, proceed to Step 3. If any other reading is obtained, the
islatrol is faulty and must be replaced.
3. Take a second reading by placing a lead on each of the two “Line
Out” terminals. If the meter reads “open”, proceed to Step 4. If any
other reading is obtained, the islatrol is faulty and must be replaced.
4. Take a third reading by placing one lead on the top “Line In”
terminal and the other lead on the top “Line Out” terminal. If “O”, or
a very low value, is obtained, the islatrol is working properly. If any
other reading is obtained, the islatrol is faulty and must be replaced.

6-3-7 Troubleshooting VXC Purge Features

The red purge indicator blinks under abnormal purge conditions. However, if the pressure switch
or purge indicator board is faulty, the red purge indicator may blink under normal purge conditions.

When the red LED blinks, follow the steps below to determine if the pressure switch or purge
indicator board are faufty. Refer to Figure 4-11, as needed.

1. Observe the purge rate indicators. If both read “zero”, use the high
flow rate adjust knob to increase the flow of gas into the enclosure
until the green LED blinks. If the red LED continues to blink while
the purge rate indicators show an increase in flow rate, the pressure
switch or purge indicator board is faulty.
2. Disconnect AC power to the VXC enclosure.

-
Ensure that AC power is OFF before opening the VXC
1
enclosure in a hazardous area.

3. Open the enclosure and disconnect the pressure switch.

4. Connect a digital multimeter (See Related Tools and Test
Equipment) to the two terminals on the pressure switch.

CAUTION
Do not overpressure the switch.

5. While forcing air into the high side of the switch, take a reading, with
the muftimeter set to “Ohms”. If the reading is “open”, the pressure
switch is faulty and must be replaced. If the reading is “O”, the
purge indicator board is faulty and must be replaced.

CHAPTER SEVEN
ILLUSTRATED PARTS BREAKDOWN

7-l INTRODUCTlON
The Illustrated Parts Breakdown contains illustrations of major components and assemblies, and
their associated parts lists. For each assembly, parts are listed in disassembly order. When an
assembly-level illustration cannot show the necessary subassembly detail, additional illustrations
are furnished. The main features of the Illustrated Parts Breakdown are described below.

7-2 INDEX NUMBERS

On the illustrations, each part of an assembly is assigned an index number. The index number is
used is the accompanying parts list to identify the part.

7-3 PARTS LIST

The five columns of the parts list are described in Paragraphs 7-3-l through 7-3-5 below.

7-3-l Figure 81Index Number

This column lists the Figure and Index Number of the component, assembly or part described.

7-32 Part Number

This column contains the M/D TOTCO pan number. For each assembly, the parts are listed in
disassembly order.

7-3-3 Description
This column contains the name and description of each assembly, subassembly and part.
Descriptions of subassemblies and/or parts that make up the main assembly are listed below the
main assembly and indented one period (. ) relative to it. Descriptions of parts that make up a
subassembly are listed below the subassembly and indented one period (. ) relative to it, or two
periods relative to the main assembly (. . ). The number of indents ( i.e.,the number of periods) in
a parts list is dictated by the number of subassemblies in the main assembly.

7-3-4 Units Per Assembly

This column lists the number of units required for one Next Higher Assembly (NHA).

7-3-5 Use On Code

This column is used only when there is more than one model of an assembly. Each model is
assigned a Use On Code (A, B, C, etc.). Then, each model’s constituent assemblies or parts
receive the Use On Code assigned to the model.
For example: There are two models of the alarm horn control box. One model is assigned a Use
On Code of “A” and the other, a Use On Code of 9”. Assemblies or parts wmmon to both
models are assigned a Use On Code of “A, B”, whereas assemblies or parts that are used in only
model A are assigned a Use On Code of “A”, and likewise for B.

APPENDIX B
DRILLOFF OPERATION

B-l INTRODUCTION
DRILLOFF is an application of the TOTAL system. It enables the operator to view drilloff test data
on a Visulogger XC Graphics Display (VXC) at the time that the tests are conducted. This
appendix explains how to use the VXC to view drilloff test data, which consists of the following:
. using the VXC keypad to view, create and edit DRILLOFF screens
. running drilloff tests.
DRILLOFF channels, recorders and display screens are initially specified during system
configuration, via a laptop PC connected to the DAQ (see Manual 60-40, TOTAL Configuration
and Calibration). The configuration software includes a default DRILLOFF screen (Figure B-l).
However, like all VXC screens, DRILLOFF screens can be created and edited using the VXC
keypad (Chapter 5).

B-2 PURPOSE
Drilloff tests are used to select the bit weight and rotary speed (RPM) that result in optimum rate
of penetration (ROP). The tests are typically performed at the top of a rock formation or
whenever ROP changes by a significant amount.
Drilloff test data is displayed as a curve that represents how ROP changes as bit weight changes,
for a fixed rotary speed (Figure B-l). Up to three curves can be plotted on one graph. By
comparing the curves, rig personnel can select the optimum bit weight and rotary speed.

B-3 METHOD
A drilloff test is conducted by applying a high bit weight and drilling at that weight until bottomhole
conditions stabilize, to insure a reasonable starting ROP. At that point, the brake is locked
and the bit continues to drill without further movement of the traveling block. As the bit drills
ahead, bit weight decreases and string tension increases because the drill string is unable to
move downward at the surface. This increase in string tension is used to calculate drill pipe
stretch, which is equal to the distance the bit travels. Pipe stretch is recorded versus time and
converted to ROP, which is then plotted versus a filtered bit weight, *BIT WEIGHT* (Figure B-l).
Drilloff tests are typically repeated at different rotary speeds and used by rig personnel to select
the bit weight and rotary speed that optimize ROP for given rig capabilities, hole and bit
conditions, and depth.

NOTE

Because the brake is locked, the ROP displayed in a drilloff test is a

theoretical ROP calculated from pipe stretch versus time. Actual ROP may
vary from the predictions of the graph.

B-4 THE DRILLOFF SCREEN

The default DRILLOFF screen is shown in Figure B-l. Up to ten alpha channels can be
displayed on the left side of the screen. These values are updated at a rate of more than once
per second.
The DRILLOFF screen can also display three test curves. Each curve represents how ROP
changes as bit weight changes for a fixed rotary speed. The rate at which data points are plotted
on the graph is determined by the recorder.

Drilloff tests are initially named DRILLOFF 1, DRILLOFF 2, and DRILLOFF 3 and the names are
displayed above the chart. However, as each test occurs, the test name automatically changes to
reflect the rotary speed of the test; the rotary speed is then displayed above the graph and
color-coded to match the associated curve.
A horizontal line is drawn through the names of inactive drilloff tests, as shown in Figure B-l. For
example, when drilloff test 3 is running, a line is drawn through the names of tests 1 and 2.

B-5 DISPLAYING THE DRILLOFF SCREEN

To display the DRILLOFF screen, follow the steps below:
1. From VXC Menu Bar 1 (Figure 5-l), select SCREENS. A menu bar
of screens available under the current rig activity is displayed.
2. Select DRILLOFF. The DRILLOFF screen (Figure B-l) is displayed.

B-6 DRILLOFF MENU BARS

DRILLOFF has two menu bars. Menu Bar 1 (Figure B-l) enables the operator to start the display
of drilloff test data and Menu Bar 2 (below) enables the operator to stop the display of drilloff test
data or to edit the DRILLOFF screen during a drilloff test.

DRILLOFF Menu Bar 2: 1 STOP DRILL-OFF TEST 0 MORE

To display DRILLOFF Menu Bar 1 below the DRILLOFF screen (as shown in Figure B-l), select
“0 MORE” from VXC Menu Bar 1 until the DRILLOFF menu bar is displayed. DRILLOFF Menu
Bar 2 is automatically displayed when one of the START TEST options is selected.

Table B-l summarizes each DRILLOFF menu bar function.

NOTE
Tests 2 (and 3) can be re-run without clearing other test curves from the
display chart. However, if test 1 is re-run, all displayed test curves are
erased.

B-7 CREATING/EDITING DRILLOFF SCREENS

DRILLOFF screens can be created and edited by following the same procedures outlined in
Chapter 5. The screens can be edited either before starting a drilloff test or during a drilloff test.

To edit a screen during a drilloff test, select “0 MORE” from DRILLOFF Menu Bar 2. VXC Menu
Bar 1 is displayed (Figure 5-l) and the DRILLOFF screen can be edited. To return to DRILLOFF
Menu Bar 2 after editing, select “0 MORE” until the DRILLOFF menu bar is displayed.

B-7-1 DRILLOFF Recorders

The horizontal axis of the DRILLOFF chart represents *BIT WEIGHT’ values (Table B-4). The
range of *BIT WEIGHT* values displayed on the chart is dictated by the recorder assigned to that
screen. Thus, to change the range of *BIT WEIGHT’ values displayed on the DRILLOFF chart,
select a different recorder for the screen.
The configuration software contains two default recorders, listed in Table B-3. Additional
DRILLOFF recorders can be created during configuration (Manual 60-40).

NOTE
Recorders can not be created using the VXC keypad. They can only be
created during system configuration and calibration.

Refer to Paragraph 5-l O-2 for instructions on selecting a recorder.

B-7-2 Creating a DRILLOFF Screen

Follow the steps below to create a DRILLOFF screen.
1. From VXC Menu Bar 3, select ADD SCREEN. The following
message is displayed:

USE CURSOR KEYS TO ENTER SCREEN NAME: _ PRESS ENTER WHEN COMPLETE
2. Use the arrow keys to spell out the screen name, as follows:
Down Arrow Key - begins at the end of the alphabet and advances
one letter each time it is pressed (i.e., Z, Y, X, . ..). after the letter A is
reached, press this key to advance through punctuation marks, the
numbers 9-O and then more punctuation marks.
Up Arrow Key - presents letters, numbers and punctuation marks
in the reverse order of the Down Arrow Key.
Right and Left Arrow Keys - move the cursor one space to the
right or one space to the left.
When the screen name is spelled out, press ENTER. The EDIT
SCREEN Menu (Paragraph 5-l 2-3) is displayed.

3. Select “1 ADD LEFT ALPHA”. A menu bar of available channels is

displayed.
4. Select the channel to add. The selected channel is added to the
bottom of the channel list and the channel menu is redisplayed.

5. Repeat Step 4, as needed, to add left alpha channels to the screen.

6. When the necessary channels have been added, press EXIT The
EDIT SCREEN Menu is displayed.
7. Select RECORDER. A menu of available recorders is displayed.

8. Select the DRILLOFF recorder to use. The new recorder name is

displayed in the upper right wrner of the screen and the EDIT
SCREEN menu is displayed.

9. Select “3 ADD STRIP”. A menu bar containing channels available

to add is displayed.

NOTE

The VXC software considers the DRILLOFF screen as a “Four Strip

Charts” screen. Thus, four strip chart channels must be selected in
order to create a DRILLOFF screen. However, because a
DRILLOFF chart can currently display data from only three
channels, the fourth strip chart channel added must be the channel
named [BLANK].

10. Select DRILLOFF 1. A vertical strip chart is displayed and the

channel menu presented in Step 9 is displayed.

11. Repeat Step 10 to add the following three strip chart channels to the
screen: DRILLOFF 2, DRILLOFF 3 and [BLANK].
12. When DRILLOFF 1, DRILLOFF 2, DRILLOFF 3 and [BLANK] have
been added, press EXIT. The EDIT SCREEN Menu is displayed.
13. Press EXIT. The following message is displayed:
1 SAVE CHANGES 2 EXIT WITHOUT SAVING
14. To save the new DRILLOFF screen, select SAVE CHANGES. VXC
Menu Bar 3 is displayed.

B-7-3 Editing the Range of ROP Values Displayed

The STRIP CHARTS: CHANNEL SCALING option enables you to edit the range of ROP values
displayed on the DRILLOFF chart vertical scale. The scale values assigned to the first drilloff test
are automatically assigned to drilloff tests 2 and 3. This is because all three drilloff test curves
are displayed on the same chart; therefore, the vertical scale must be the same for all three tests.
Follow the steps below to edit the range of ROP represented by the vertical scale.
1. Select STRIP CHARTS from VXC Menu Bar 1. The STRIP
CHARTS menu bar is displayed.
2. Select CHANNEL SCALING. The following message is displayed,
where XXXXXis the name of the first drilloff test:

ENTER XXXXX CHART BOTTOM SCALE: OR ARROW KEYS TO SELECT

3. Key-in the minimum vertical scale value and press ENTER. The
new value is displayed. The following message is displayed, where
XXXXXis the name of the first drilloff test:

ENTER XXXXX CHART TOP SCALE: OR ARROW KEYS TO SELECT

4. Key-in the maximum vertical scale value and press ENTER. The
new value is displayed.
5. Press EXIT to return to the STRIP CHARTS menu. Press EXIT
again to return to VXC Menu Bar 1.

B-6 RUNNING DRILLOFF

Follow the steps bebw to display drilloff data on screen, during a drilloff test.
1. Refer to Table B-4 to insure that values for ail DRILLOFF manual
value channels are correct. If PIPE STRETCH is a derived channel,
insure that PIPE I.D. and PIPE O.D. are present and wrrect.
2. Have the driller lifl the drill string off bottom and zero BIT WEIGHT.
3. Press the “0” key until DRILLOFF Menu Bar 1 is displayed.
4. Establish the desired RPM and starting bit weight. Drill at this initial
bii weight until stable bottomhole conditions are established, then
lock the brake and select 1START TEST 1 (Figure B-l). The curve
for Drilbff test 1 is displayed.

NOTE
The initial ROP value used by the DRILLOFF algorithm is the value
of ROP at the time START TEST 1 is selected. Thus, it is critical to
insure that stable bottomhole conditions are established and,
consequently, a reasonable starting ROP value is reached.

5. When the bit weight reaches a fairly constant value and a

substantial decrease in ROP occurs, select STOP DRILL-OFF
TEST.
6. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 at different rotary speeds to run a second and
third drilioff test, selecting 2 START TEST 2 and 3 START TEST 3,
respectively.

Table B-4. DRILLOFF Channel Deacrlptions
