Background Information for Learners

Mental Addition
Mental math is about performing math calculations in your head without a calculator or paper.

Brother, Dad says that we have 28 guest and 21 family members attending the party. How many chairs do we
need to prepare?
Strategy 1 Add the tens, and then add the ones.
Add 28 and 21.
First add the two tens. 20+20 = 40
Next add the t wo ones.8+1= 9
The sum of the sums of the tens and ones is 49.

Strategy 2 Make one addend a multiple of 10.

Add 18 and 26.
Add a number to the first addend to make it a multiple of 10.
Subtract from the second addend the number that you added to the first addend.
Therefore (18+2) + (26-2) =20+24= 44 or (20 +26)-2 = 46 -2 =44

Strategy 3 count on by 2s or 10s

14 +8 = 14, 16. 18, 20, 22
15+30= 15, 25, 35, 45
Strategy 4 Look for pairs that make 10.
2+ 6+ 5 + 9+ 8
=2+ 6+ 5+4+5+8
=2 +8 +6 +4+5+5
=10 + 10 +10
=30
You can invent your own strategies to add numbers mentally.
