Title/ Standard Chapter 2: Carbon Compounds, Alcohols Think pair share
Content
Objective/ Learning Students will be taught to analyze the alcohol Hot seat
Standard
Learning Outcome/ At the end of the lesson, students should be able to: Presentation /
Achievement 1. Define what is alcohol
Standard 2. State general formula of alcohol
3. Identify the functional group of alcohol
4. List the names and molecular formulae of the first four
alcohols

Successful Criteria Students are considered to be successful if: I-Think mind map
1. Students are able to define alcohol verbally
2. Student are able to state general formula of alcohol
verbally
3. Students are able to identify the functional group of
alcohol on diagram
4. Students are able to list the names and molecular
formulae of the first fouralcohol in table given.

Three stray, one
Induction Set  Teacher greets the students Level of Mastery
(5 minutes)
 Teacher brings four types of thing to the class which are
perfume, wet tissue, mouthwash and toner. Then, ask
the student to guess the similarity between these four
things.

Class Development  Teacher gives explanation what is alcohol. TP6

(15 minutes) - Alcohol is an one of organic compound groups that
made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen and
hydroxyl group or –OH

 Teacher give explanation about functional group of

alcohol which is –OH which named as hydroxyl group

 Teacher gives explanation on General formula of alcohol

which is CnH2n+1OH,  n = 1, 2, 3, and so on.
- n=no of carbon atom
- Example: teacher chooses one example of alkane
molecule such as methane which have molecular
formula CH₃OH then teacher state the number of
carbon atom in pentane which is 1 and teacher
substitute it into general formula of alcohol which is
n= 1, then get the answer is CH₃OHwhich it not
alkane molecule anymore but it become alcohol
molecule because present of hydroxyl group.

 Teacher give explanation on how to naming of the

straight chain alcohol and the names of alcohols must
ends with ‘ –ol’.

- Teacher take one example of alkane molecule and

change the alphabet of ‘e’ at the end of the name of
alkane with ‘-ol’.
- Example: Methane become Methanol

 Teacher gives explanation on how to write molecular

formula of alcohol
- Teacher chooses one example of alcohol molecule
and state it general formulae and teacher
differentiate it by three elements which are carbon,
hydrogen and oxygen and state how many of
carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in alcohol molecule.
- Example: Methanol, general formulae of Methanol
is CH₃OH
- C=1 H= 4 O= 1
- The molecular formula must end with number of
oxygen atom in that molecule not the hydroxyl
groupso molecular formula of Methanol is CH₄O

Grouping Activity 1 TP5

(10 minutes)  Teacher apply 21st learning activity which is presentation TP4
 Grouping work
i. Teacher asks students to divide into 3 groups
ii. Teacher asks students to complete the table of
the names and molecular formulae offirst four
alcohol given in 5 minutes.

Carbon Hydroge Oxygen Molecular Name

(C) n (H) (O) Formulae
1

iii. Teacher asks students in each group to select

one representative to explain their answer in
front of the class.
Carbo Hydrogen Oxygen Molecula Name
n (C) (H) (O) r
Formulae
1 4 1 CH₄O Methanol
2 6 1 C₂H₆O Ethanol
3 8 1 C₃H₈O Propanol
4 10 1 C₄H₁₀O Butanol
Conclusion  Teacher asks the student questions about the topic to TP3
(5 minutes) assess student understanding.
 Teacher concludes the lesson. TP2
