RYINI'S - TOP 10 TIPS FOR QUALITY

RECORDING IN STUDIO

I know nobody is perfect, but how accurate is your timing on your singing or freestyles?

✔ One of the biggest thing that separates a FIRE artist from a decent artist is their accuracy.
When I hear someone is noticeably off it ruins my impression…

As someone who records live instruments each day to a metronome, I can sense even the
smallest timing and pitch issues. ♂

Recording live guitar is very much like recording vocals. The condenser mic can pickup the
slightest sounds, and there are many aspects of the recording that need to be near flawless if you
want a worthwhile recording.

✔The worst thing you can do is have a hit song idea, but rush the recording process and ruin the
quality… ✗

That is why I generally do about 20 - 50 takes of each main section and ONLY keep the best of
the best... It only takes a few minutes when you do your takes on loop without pause. Sometimes
I get lucky and get a near perfect take fast, but there is so much to consider!

After thousands of recordings day-after-day in front of the microphone, I have figured out the
perfect distance, volume, tones as well as mastered timing and external sound reduction. This is
one of the things that separates me from most producers is I record my samples for my beats live
in studio...

And I want to share with you what I consider when getting that perfect recording. Some of
it you may not consider currently… Next time you are recording or practicing, I invite you to
work on each of the elements below until you can nail each aspect consistently.
2.

1.) Confident 😃 vs Frustration zone 😡

Every recordings situation is a little different. And the way you feel that day in that situation will differ.
So its good to understand how you feel and be honest about this situation. If something is making
you uncomfortable you must face it head on.

For example, when I record at home, often my roommate sits in the room next door angry that I am
making noise. He often gets mad at me recording music daily and I sense his bad vibes and
frustration, and I start to hold back. I start to play quietly, weak, with no confidence or feeling. It is
sucked out of me from the external environment. And there may be something distracting you as well
from unleashing your true potential. This could be the environment you are not used to… Someone
is giving off bad vibes… Judgement...

Or even possibly your lack of practice or preparedness, so its really important to be aware of what is
holding you back so you can make a choice to overcome the obstacle and ultimately achieve top
quality recording…

If something is throwing you off, address it. Remember that recording is a dope experience
especially when you stay cool and focused on the recording, not the distractions.
Its YOUR time to shine

I record the same small section over and over again until I truly sense, feel and hear the recording in
the headphones as I perform and can sense that all of the elements described below are up to par
with my current expectations. 90% accuracy and above in my opinion is an A, and its really hard to
nail every aspect to 90% of what it could be, so it often takes a lot of practice and many confident/
humble attempts to get the whole song sounding professional…

Don’t rely on the mixing engineer to make you sound good… True artist know that the actual
microphone recording is more important than anything else. Especially regarding the overall feel.

If you enjoy the recording experience and stay confident, you have a great setup.

It is important to make arrange that you have a place of expression as such.

But there is a lot more to consider!

2.) Timing - This one is fairly obvious and when I was just starting out this was main thing I
focused on. Having accurate timing oftentimes separates a decent rapper from a really
sharp sounding true G rapper/singer.

To test your quality, use the snare drum test.. Can you tap the vocal rhythm using your
fingers

You should be able to take any of your vocal patterns and play it by hitting something like a
snare drum for each syllable or note change in the vocals.

The patten should be clear...

Timing is hugely important when recording, but once you master timing and comfortability,
you will start to notice other improvements.

3.)Tone and Clarity

When recording there is a proximity effect where the closer you are to a microphone, the
more bass is picked up exponentially.

Interestingly, there is also an effect where the volume of the instrument or voice can affect
the EQ.

Being aware of what the EQ looks like when you record will allow you to use a tone
strategically to blend in with the music, or contrast and stick out just as the best producers
and audio engineers use gain staging to allow each instrument an area to shine in the mix.

Tone and clarity also goes a long way in terms of the mood you are trying to create in the
song. For example, if you have a soft song that is recorded at low volumes, but you sing
very loud and powerful. Its likely not going to sound that good.

If you are singing to a sad song, and you are singing really loud, you will also likely ruin the
vibe. The tone relates directly with volume and mood. When all 3 are used strategically
together (tone volume & mood), magic happens.

Without this understanding, hit songs can be ruined.

4.

4.)Volume of Recording
Some people record where the input volume peak is just below 0.db or the red “clipping”
area.

Depending on the situation, I have generally found that recording with the peak volume
around -14 D.b leads to minimal sound leakage and unnecessary high end buzzing around
5k HZ.

When recording any louder, too much sound is being picked up by the microphone initially.
And when recording to far below 14db, the noise increases as the instruments volume or
gain is increased during the mixing and mastering process.

You can experiment, but its good to be aware of.

5.)Unnecessary Sound Issues

Some recordings can be amazing but have some kind of glitch in the sound. Examples of
this could be external noise picked up from the microphone, too much air blown in the
microphone, lack of pop-filter, glitch in microphone/cable/DAW.

6.)Room Acoustics
Shape of room - Squares are not ideal due to phase cancellation which could cause volume
and Eq issues.

Amount of Objects - Less objects generally = more unnecessary reverb.

Size of room - Larger = longer reverb tail

5.

7.)Headphone/ Vocal Volume

For the recording to be perfect you must have a proper balance where the song is at the
appropriate volume level for the mood of the song so you can hear your self properly.

I've seen so many struggle because they couldn't hear themselves, the music, or the
metronome.

Small issues like that many artists wouldn't notice to optimize so the volume is loud and
powerful if you need to sing something to that energy and volume level.

8.) Headphone purpose/quality

Proper recording headphones help reduce noise bleed which may be picked up and could
ruin a good take.

If you're working on your own setup, look into which headphones are best for recording
purposes.

Some are better designed for recording, mixing, or casual music listening.

9.)Microphone purpose/quality
Every microphone is different and its important to have one best suited for the purpose.

Condenser microphones are generally the highest quality for vocal recording, however they
need an external power source and are very sensitive.

Dynamic microphones are also good, but they pick up less sound and are more durable and
preferable for live performances.

There are other types of mics, but those are the main ones I would recommend looking into.
6.

10.) Feel -
I ask myself, “How did that feel to me as I recorded it?”

Was I “in the zone” and feeling the music as I recorded it?

Often times, my best recordings are those that had a feeling during the recording, and that
feeling is now heard through the music in the quality and variety within the volume, tone,
timing and every other aspect of the recording.

This allows the audience to really feel what you felt, increasing their connection to you as an
artist, but also enjoying that song that much more.

BONUS

11.) The record button working but NOT ACTUALLY RECORDING.

The worst thing is when you press record but somehow the recording is not picked up.

This happened to me once and I lost one of my best recordings.

I almost ended up in tears that night.

Always make sure you actually see and hear the sound wave if your'e in control.
