RATIONALE

The product PERICULUM is a diamond-shaped perfume bottle

to reflect a social phenomenon that people are being insecure
about themselves. The diamond-shaped body is a metaphor
for people are always pictured as a shiny diamond from others’
view, and we only tend to see others good characteristics but
easily ignoring the good ones in ourselves. The bottle won’t
be able to stand on its own so it reflects the vulnerable quality
in a lot of insecure people. There is also no liquid in the bottle
because the product is telling people that they are beautiful
enough so they don’t need any enhancements.

We decided use transparent acrylic sheets for the 4 walls and

a wood-like texture paper board for the base we wanted the
perfume bottle, who represents a person, to feel vulnerable and
uncomfortable. It would seem as though everyone would be able
to see through the walls, which exposes them to the public eye.
The wood-like texture base because when people think about
wood and the colour of wood, they would feel very warm and
comfortable because it may remind them of home. Therefore,
this juxtaposition of the board and the acrylic sheets helps to
enhance our theme.

The scratch on the acrylic sheets reflect the vulnerability in

us, and also relates the idea back to the imperfect and insecure
diamond bottle. We then decided to attach the acrylic sheets to
the board with just 2 jump rings on each side instead of securing
it really tightly with some other material because we wanted
to make it seem that it can fall apart easily. We attached the
sheets to the board that way because we wanted to be able to
open up all 4 walls that were attached to the string. This is
because when people untie the bow that connects the walls,
all 4 walls would fall down and the perfume, which stands on
a base that is supported by the walls, would fall down as well,
leaving it vulnerable. Then, people would be able to see that the
diamond perfume bottle won’t be able to stand up on its own.

STAGE 1: CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Rough Concepts:

• Object as a sculpture to represent a some kind of social aware-

ness (for example, it can be some trendy topics like mental
health, littering, etc...)

• Interactive 3D object, something that can be interacted with

people pass by (for example, like a small artistic sculpture that
can somehow record different people’s sound or steps’ sound,
located at Dundas square )

• Light box-- acrylic sheets, colourful/rainbow coloured light

bulbs can be placed somewhere on church st (but somebody
already made a rainbow chair)
The box does not have to be a square, it can be a very abstract
or more representational shape. After we decided our location
and the topic we want to express, we can engrave key words or
representational glyphs/images/shapes onto different sides.

• Placing a random object in AGO and document how the audi-

ence treat it. or having an artwork label beside the piece to pre-
tend it to be an artwork and question about the essence of art or
the conformity behaviour (I’ve noticed that if there’s a person
standing in front of a work long enough in a gallery/museum,
other people will tend to stay.

Developed Concept 1-- Insecurity

In conclusion, our first concept is to create a mirroring/acrylic

textured cube, with one side made in reflective material and
the rest three can highlight on different social issues that are
related to our theme insecurity.

Developed Concept 2-- Chaos

Our second concept is to make an object that symbolizes for the

rapid consuming culture. Things happen and disappear very
fast, we can not capture the essence or valuable things. We
want to present the object in a form of kaleidoscope, which can
represent changes and movements very well, and also hard for
people to capture. We have not decided what to put inside yet.

STAGE 2: FINALIZING CONCEPTS

FINALIZING IDEAS

•Furthering the light box idea-- Our topic is generally about

self awareness and insecurity, which is something that tightly
relates to each individuality. With a problem like this, people
should be taking some time to have a conversation with them-
selves, or feeling conflicted when they are battling with the
insecurity. Light bulbs symbolize for encouragement, boldness,
hope, etc...It lits from inside to outside, and from bottom to
top. As to reflect these qualities of a light bulb in a human
being, they can represent that people can shine from inside,
looking confident and bright, and accept themselves completely
with hope.

• Interesting point: Imagine the object itself is an insecure per-

son who does not have a lot of self confidence.

•We don’t put any liquid in the bottle because we are telling t

• We can use diamond shaped object to deliver the message that

everyone looks like a shiny diamond from other people’s view.
We tend to see other people’s good characteristics easily but
constantly ignoring the good ones in ourselves.

• A Latin name in because it relates back to the Italian Re-

naissance where idealized forms are preferred over natural /
ordinary forms

• Nowadays, a lot of people translate words in English into

Latin for aesthetic purposes > beauty

• Beauty salons > fits out concept the most about insecurity

FINAL IDEA

•3D Printing a diamond-shaped bottle

• Laser cut the package with transparent acrylic sheets

•Name the perfume INSECURITY but in Latin

• Working on how to present the diamond and the box

• Branding card

• Place at the Face Shop at Eaton Centre with their agreement
