Alternator Problem - Charging Problem and/or Noisy Operation


SMCS - 1405-035

Use this procedure to troubleshoot a problem with the charging system. Also, use this procedure if one of
the following event codes is active or logged.

J1939 Code and Description Comments

167-0 The voltage from the alternator charging system has fallen below the

High - most severe (3) The code is logged.
167-1 The voltage from the alternator charging system has fallen below the
Charging System Potential : trip point for the programmed delay time.
Low - most severe (3) The code is logged.

167-15 The voltage from the alternator charging system has risen above the
Charging System Potential : trip point for the programmed delay time.
High - least severe (1) The code is logged.
167-17 The voltage from the alternator charging system has fallen below the
Charging System Potential : trip point for the programmed delay time.
Low - least severe (1) The code is logged.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results

1. Check for Codes Codes Result: An associated code is active.

in damage to the alternator.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test
Step 3.

3. Check the Condition of the Result: The alternator drive pulley is OK.

A. Look for deep grooves that have
been worn into the pulley by the belt. Result: The alternator drive pulley is NOT OK.

4. Check the Alternator Bearings
