Oil Temperature Is High


SMCS - 1348-035-TA

Use this procedure to troubleshoot high oil temperature. Also, use this procedure if one of the following
event codes is active or logged.

Troubleshooting Test Step Value Result

1. Check for Codes Codes Result: An associated


code is active.
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool
connector. Repair: Troubleshoot
any associated codes
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for before continuing with
the event code. this test.

Result: A code is
active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.

Result: The coolant


temperature is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The coolant


temperature is NOT
OK.
2. Check the Engine Coolant Temperature
Temperature
Repair: Refer to
A. Determine if a high coolant temperature condition exists.
Troubleshooting,
"Coolant Temperature
Is High" for additional
information.

If the problem is not


resolved, proceed to
Test Step 3.

Result: The oil level is


OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The oil level is


NOT OK.
3. Check the Engine Oil Level Oil Level
Repair: Add oil and
repair any leaks.

If the problem is not


resolved, proceed to
Test Step 4.

4. Check the Oil Temperature Regulators Regulators Result: The oil


temperature regulators
A. Make sure that the engine oil temperature regulators open are OK.
according to the correct values. Refer to Specifications, "Engine
Oil Temperature Regulators" for additional information. Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: The oil


temperature regulators
are NOT OK.

Repair: Replace the


oil temperature
regulators.

If the problem is not


resolved, proceed to
Test Step 5.

Result: There was not


debris or restrictions in
the oil cooler.

Proceed to Test Step 6.

Result: There was


5. Check the Oil Cooler for a Restriction

A. Check the inlet side of the oil cooler for debris or blockage.
Repair: Clean or
replace the oil cooler.

If the problem is not


resolved, proceed to
Test Step 6.

6. Inspect the Valves
