Steels Cast Irons

2. Fill up the blank box. State the advantage disadvantage of cold working over hot working.

Hot working Cold working Metal fabrication methods

Forming Casting Miscellaneous

3. Metal alloys isothermal transformation. State the conditions that lead to respected transformation.

Austenite

4. Describe the difference between fine and coarse pearlite.

5. Using the isothermal transformation diagram for an iron-carbon alloy of eutectoid composition, specify the
nature of the final microstructure present (in terms of microconstituent present and approximate
percentage of each) of a small specimen that has been subjected to the following time –temperature
treatment. In each case, assume that the specimen begins at 760 oC and that has been held long enough to
achieve a complete and homogeneous austenitic structure
a. Rapidly cool to 700degC, hold for 10 4 s, then quench to room temperature (P + B)
b. Rapidly cool to 575degC, hold for 20s, rapidly cool to 350degC, hold for 100s, then quench to room
temperature (P)
c. Rapidly cool to 250degC, hold for 100s, then quench to room temperature in water. Reheat to
315degC for 1 h and slowly cool to room temperature (M  TM)

6. After the cold work process, the carbon steel alloy was then subjected to heat treatment in order to increase
the properties of the metal.

a. State THREE (3) heat treatment methods that can be applied.

b. Describe ONE (1) of the heat treatments stated in (a) on the effect of tensile strength, ductility and
microstructure of the rods. Justify your answer.
7. Answer the question base on the diagram below.

Figure 1: Phase diagram of iron-carbon alloy (the diagram terminates at 6.7 wt% C)

a. For a 2.0 wt% C, draw schematic sketches of the microstructure that would be observed for
conditions of very slow cooling at the following temperatures: 1500 oC, 1000°C, 800°C, and 700°C.
Label all phases and indicate their approximate compositions.
b. Determine the temperature for complete solidification at 4.3 wt% C for slow cooling

c. Sketch the solidified microstructure you would expect to observe at 4.3 wt% C for slow cooling,
