PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA - There has been a spike in the number of baby-dumping
incidences since 2010. After dropping from 102 cases in 2008 to 79 in 2009, the figure
increased to 91 and 98 in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

So far this year, 31 cases were reported, said Harjeet Singh, the Women, Family and
Community Development Ministry deputy secretary-general. He said the increasing
numbers could be due to more reports being made and society becoming aware of the
problem. He said feedback from counselling sessions and case studies at several
shelter homes for those aged less than 18 listed lack of knowledge about reproductive
health as the most important factor that led to unwanted pregnancies. “Many of the
young were not educated on how to avoid getting into such situations,” he said after
launching a “Say No to Baby Dumping” seminar here.

TASK 2:
In your opinion, what are two possible solutions to address the issue? Write your
response in TWO paragraphs. Each body paragraph should be written in 180 – 200
words. Your paragraph must contain a topic sentence, supporting sentences,
supporting details and a concluding sentence.

Body Paragraphs:

First and foremost, one way of to overcome this problem is the Ministry of Educatio should

take initiative in implementing sex education in school as a subject of it's own. Actually, this idea

already being thought in subjects such as Biology, Islamic studies and Moral studies but only as

in subtopics. Teenagers can recognize good sex practice and prepares students to become

healthy and sexually responsible adults. The results of the Malaysian Population and Family

Survey 2014 revealed that many teenagers in the country were still clueless about reproductive

health. It reported that among adolescents who experienced premarital sexual intercourse, 72%

of them did not use any contraceptions. School authorities should also bring their students on

an organised trip to a health care center or a contraceptive clinic as apart if their curriculum

where students will get an exposure about the types of pregnancy prevention methods.

Teachers can teach the students about the female and male analogy, the pros of a healthy and

responsible relationship among students and the consequences of unplanned and unprotected

sex. To sum up, the government should actually consider to implement sex education at various

levels and in large numbers to increase the impact nation-wide.

Besides that,Non-governmental organisation (NGO) should set up baby hatcheries at place

with high statistics and cases of baby dumping. The main objective of the baby hatch is to offer

the mothers out there who do not want their babies to surrender them in a safe place instead of

abandoning them in highly risky and dangerous areas where their chances of survival is

minimal. Mothers can bring their babies, usually newborns to the nearest baby hatch and safely

leave them into a hatch, which has a small door to open to incubator bed. The staff will be

alerted about the baby's presence by the ringing if a bell after the mother has left.Non-

govermental organisation van also collaborate with government hospitals to provide a baby

hatch in the hospital where the mothers can leave their babies there. Orphan Care, Malaysian's

fiirst baby hatch reported that by the end of 2015, the lives of 207 babies were saved thanks to

the baby hatch programmes. However, the number of babies dumped yearly up to 2015 did not

show a corresponding reduction. To wrap up, the Non-governmental organisation should join

forces to raise funds and establish more baby hatcheries across the nation.
