Annotation: The article is devoted to the analysis of the French сaper war of 1688-1697 against
the League of Augsburg. The king of France, Louis XIV, pursued an expansionist policy in the
lands of Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs, for which he carried out a great reform of the navy,
which has confirmed its ability to compete with the grand powers of Europe in previous wars.
But the government decided to move away from the strategy of naval squadron battles to conduct
сaper war. The author aimed to find out what this strategy was and what results did France
achieve in the war with the transition to this strategy. The author came to the conclusion that
raids on enemy trade caravans weakened the allied foreign trade, and the captured prize went to
overcome the domestic crisis in France. With that, this strategy put the navy in second roles,
which significantly weakened it. The novelty of the article lies in an objective and complex
review of the сaper war as a strategy with the identification of both positive and negative sides.
Keywords: the war of the League of Augsburg, Louis XIV, Colbert, Pontchartrain, French
capers.
