Lailatul Qadr: The Night of Power

Lailatul Qadr: Means the night of honour/dignity and power.

Significance of the Night

One of the most unique aspects of the month of Ramadan is that it includes Lailatul
Qadr (the night of power), which is the most blessed night of the year. This is that very
night in which Allah Ta’ala chose to reveal the Holy Qur’an upon our beloved Rasul
(SAW). A complete Surah (97: Al Qadr) is revealed regarding this night. It is mentioned
in that Surah that this night is better than a thousand months (83 years & four months) as
Allah himself speaks:

“The night of al Qadr is better than a thousand months.” [(Al Qadr,

97:3)].
This means the worship performed in this night brings more reward than that worship
carried out for the period of a thousand months. Every year in the month of Ramadan,
this night is given to the Ummah. Muslims engage in prayers, recitation of Qur’an and
praying to Allah:

"The person who offered prayers to Allah in the night of Qadr with
faith and with hope of reward from Allah, all his past sins have been
forgiven." [(Bukhari)]
Since this is the night wherein Allah sends his special blessings from the heavens upon
the earth, being so blessed that even the angels from the heavens come down upon the
earth and convey SALAAMS to every believer as it is narrated on the authority of Ibn
Abbas (Ra) that Rasul (SAW) had said:

“All those angels who are placed by the [“Sidratul Muntaha”] (The tree of the
utmost boundary beyond which none can pass) come down with the angel Jibreel (A) to
the earth and there remain no male or female believers whom they do not convey
SALAAMS to, except the person who drinks or consumes pork” (Bukhari & Muslim)
WHEN?
The most correct saying is that it occurs in the odd nights of the last ten nights of
Ramadan and this is shown by the Hadith of 'A’ishah (Ra) who said:

“Allah’s Messenger (SAW) used to practice I'tikaaf in the last ten nights and
say"Search for the Blessed Night in the odd (nights) from the last ten (nights) of
Ramadan." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Also 'A’ishah (Ra), narrated:

"The Prophet (SAW) used to tighten his waist-wrapper (Izaar/Lungi) - (meaning
detached himself from his wives in order to worship, and exerted himself in seeking
Lailatul-Qadr), spend the night in worship, and wake the family in the last ten
nights." (Bukhari, Muslim)

Although there are different reports in different traditions regarding the exact night, it is
almost unanimous that the blessed night occurs in one of the last ten nights of
Ramadhaan and more probably in one of the last ten odd nights i.e. 2lst, 23rd,
25th 27th or 29th night.

The popular opinion is, however, in favour of the 27th Night of Ramadan but that is
not absolutely certain. It was therefore the practice of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and his
companions to make I'tikaaf in the Mosque for the whole time offering Divine service
during the last ten days of Ramadan.

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE IN THIS NIGHT

Verily, one who does not derive benefit, and does not value this golden opportunity for
the worship of Allah Ta’ala is a sign of total ignorance. This is the reason why
Rasulullah (SAW) has stated:

“The person, who deprives himself from the blessings of Lailatul Qadr, indeed has
deprived himself of all good and none other than an ignorant person is deprived
from such good.” (Ibn Majah)

In this night a person should make worship of Allah Ta’ala exclusively, even though
there is no special form of worship prescribed for this night. One can engage in the
offering of nafl prayers as much as possible or in supplications, in the recitation of the
Holy Qur’an, Du’a can be made, and any form of Dhikr should be constantly uttered, or
by any other good deed, which is not contrary to the Shari’ah.
ª Seeking Forgiveness:
Hazrat A’ishah (Ra) asked the Prophet (SAW) that if she will get the night of
Qadr what Du’a she should say. The Prophet (SAW) replied that she should say the
following Du’a:

{"Allâhumma innaka `afuwwun tuhh’ ibbul `afwa fa`fu `annee”}:

“Oh, Allah you are surely most forgiving and merciful, you love
forgiveness, so forgive me.” [Recorded by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmizi]

WHAT SHOULD NOT BE DONE IN THIS NIGHT?

We should also keep in mind that this night is meant for developing a special connection
and bond with one’s creator, this is a night for devoting oneself to Allah Ta’ala with
one’s soul & heart. It is rarely that this purpose be achieved in congregations &
assemblies. This is the reason why it is not advisable to hold ceremonies or deliver
lengthy talks and lectures or illuminate the mosques. Rasulullah (SAW) never tended to
celebrate this night through lectures, meetings, gatherings, distribution of food or even by
offering prayers in congregation; rather he used to individually perform acts of
worship in loneliness.

Indeed the blessings of our Lord are innumerable, but fortunate are those who
harvest them and regard them as significant.
