Jazz Jammers at the Grampians Jazz
From Colin Garrett
After much trepidation re the state of Halls Gap
following the recent devastating floods we were
pleasantly surprised to find that all was in order and
that the festival proceeded without a hitch. Despite
Stony Creek being widened by a couple of meters
due to a massive flow of water and the slopes,
where people usually sat, denuded of all grass, it
proved to be one of the most successful venues due
to the last minute arrival of a few tonnes of tan bark
and some strategically placed logs to sit on. The
organising committee have made a tremendous
effort for which we were all grateful.
Anne Smith dominated the program with eight sets in
two days and drew a crowd on each occasion. She
made each performance different by changing her
outfit each time and not repeating any number so
she sang approximately 50 tunes.

Other singers from the jams to perform were Paul Bonnington played with Kevin Blaze in a a
Amanda Cox, Anne Hayres (backed by John Curtis) band called "Its a Vibe"

Most entertaining: Morris Ward combo featuring
Annie Smith and Jack Morris. Slick interpretation of

participation. … cont,,
My Favourite: Vintage Suits lead by Steve Silk (who
works at times with Buddy Love) Tightly arranged
standards, originals and popular tunes with rhythms
that varied even within numbers and excellent
vocals. Audience were pleading for more.
Highlight: Jamming alone in Ralphys with an 83 year
old pianist. So good in his genre, so relaxed,,,
Kevin Blaze, Brad Lau and myself performed with Lowlights: Not being able to get to see all the
