Officers . T-1 advised on March 31, 1954 that NIKOLA TELESHANIC continues to be the vresident and principal figure of the subject organization. No debate ensued and inasmuch as no objections were raised, TULISHANIC stated that these individuals were considered elected and would form the new administration of the club, NIKODA DULESIIAY IC T-1 advised on March 15, 195) that RIKOLA ‘TULESMANIG was a member of the Yugoslav Section of the Communist Party, USA as far back as 1947. The informant based this contention on the fact that in November, 1947, he observed TELESMANIC in attendance at meetings of the Yugoslav Section of the Communist Party, These meetings, the informant stated, were open only to members of the Communist Party and their credentials were checked prior to their being admitted to the meeting all. ‘The informant further said that following the Tito-Cominform, split in July, 19,8, TSLESMANIC immediately aligned himself with the pro-Pito faction among the Yugoslavs md has been active ever since as one of the foremost spokesmen of the pro-Tito groups in Kew York City, He was one of the organizers of the subject organization as well asa member of the Founding Committee of shareholders of "Novi List", pro-Tito Croatian language newspaper _in Wew York City, In addition he owns stock in the Yugoslav-American Home where he maintains a position of strict opposition to the controlling pro-Cominform group. TILTSMANIC is a house painter by profession and is employed at the Dakota Apartments, 1 West 72Ha Street, New York City. He resides at 2357: 33rd Street, Astoria, Long Island, Apartment A and is a naturalized American citizen. -2- “ HY 105-2290 Regarding the above mentioned newspaper, "Novi List", it is to be noted that T-1 has repeatedly stated that "Novi List" is the foremost pro-Tito propaganda organ among the Yugoslav element in this country. It is to be noted thet the Yugoslav- American Cooperative Home in New York City has been designated by the Attorney General of the United States pursuant to Executive Order 10450, ANTHON CUKOVIG T-1 stdted that ANTHON CUKOVIC is @ close personal friend of NIKOLA TELESMANIC and a member of the captioned organization from its inception. He has frequently been observed by the informant in attendance at public functions held under the sponsor- ship of pro-Pito-groups. In addition the informant stated that CUKOVIC owns stock in the Yugoslav-American Cooperative Home, - On December 1h, 1939, T-2 advised that ANTION CUKCVIC, 110 West S3rd' Street, New York City, was then a subscriber to the Croatian language newspaper, "Radnicki Glasnik", published in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. ~ t is to be noted that the Hagsachusetts House Corimittee on Un-American Activities tas cited "Radnicki Glasnik" as "A Croati@n daily which the Communist Party admits is under Communist influence." (Massachusetts House Committee on Un-American Activities, Report, 1938, page 280). Information furnished by T-3, of unknown reliability, on May 19, 1953, reflected ANTHON CUKOVIC, as of 1950, was a ‘subscriber to "Novi List", STANEEY HRONCICH A review of the United States Attorney's files in the Bastern District of New York by SA ROBERT C. x HY 105-2290 DAVIS disclosed that STANLGY HRONCICH, 30-76 35th Street, Astoria, Long Island, New York had been prosecuted in the United States District Court, Eastern District of New Yorls on an indictment, filed ay 26; 1036 changing hin with 03 lation of Section ETE Ungeee Sates ae? (Naturalization Petition number }10)31) On July 16, 1945 HRCFCICH was interviewed for pardon to restore civil rights, ,He stated that he was not a Commnist or Fascist and“ not interested in either doctrine and that he firmly believed in democratic principles and the American form of governnient. He also stated he was a member of the Yugoslav Unity Club and said that the aims of this organization were to promote solidarity arid friendship among Yugoslavs and the rest of the Slavs in New Yori City. HRONCICH advised that there were probably some Communist minded individuals = - in the Unity Club, but that he Had no specific informa- tion regarding such persons. J by SA ROBERT C. STBVE VIDOVIC T-1 advised on March 29, 1954 that STEVE VIDCVIC .» is at present in Yugoslavia oh a vacation trip of three months duration. According to the informant, VIDOVIC has, an the past, been one of the most active members of the subject organization and is a close personal friend of ‘NIKOLA TRLESMANIC, chairman. the files of thé New York Office disclosed that T-5 advised on Hay 18, 1949 that STEVS VIDOVIC. assof 1949, was a subscriber to "fhe: Slavic American", organ of ~ the. American: Slav Congress. "The Slavic American" was cited as the official organ of’ the American Slav Congress by the Congressional Committee on Un-American Activities; Report on the.American Slav Congress “and assodiated organizations, House report number 1951, Ap#il 26, .1950, page 1. It is further noted-that the American Slav Gongress was designated by ‘the Attorney General of the United States pursuant to Executive Order 10450. in 2.23, 1949 T-6 advised that SPivE VIDOVIG was in attendance At a banquet given on Nay 13, 1949 at the: Yugoslav Arierican Home in honor of the Yugoslav Delegates to the United Nations. IVAN BUDINIG T-1 advised that LVAK BUDINIG iho owns and operates a cleaning store in New York City, has a reputation among pro-Tito Vugoslavs of being a strong sympathizer of the present regime in Yugoslav: However, sccording to the. informant, BUDINIC,Zalthough a member of the subject organization, was not active in this or any other Yugoslav organization in 192 and 1953. The inforriant stated the fact that, FUDINIG Has now acoésted the position of Vice Secretary and Acting Secretary of the Club of American Yugoslav Friéndshio during the absence of ST? VIDCVEC, is to be attributed to his desire to visit -S- 3 WY 105-2290 Yugoslavia in the near future. The informant. stated. that BUDINIC feels that ar: gemenstretion of his pro-fito loyalty at this tiris might be of great value to him once he reaches Yugosiavig and might insure his safety: from molestations by: the Yugoslav Secret: Police. In this connection the informant stated that BUDINIC upon @ previous visit to “jurope about four years ago only travelled as far as Trieste on the Yugosiavia border while his wife went on to Yugosiavéa. He remained in Trieste for a period of two months wiile his wife visited with relatives in Yugoslavia prior to their _ ‘return trip to this country, The informant stated thé strange fact that. BUDINIC. did not accompany his wife into Yugoslavia was entirely due to his fear of the Tito Secret Police. ~ TOMA LAPIN %-1 stated that TOMA LATIN is van individual of advanced age who resides in-Hobokéen, New Jersey: and ‘doés not ‘seem to be working. “He became,’a member of the Founding Committee of "Novi, List" when this paper first organized in 199. and occasionally writes for "Novi List". — - The informant stated that LATIN .came to. the: attention of the Yugoslav colony in New York City when "Wovi, List" some years ago published a poem by -hin glorifying Tito and his regime. ‘The November 9, 1950. issue of "Novi List" page 5 carries en: item reflecting that TCMA LATIN had been in’ attendance at a banquet held’ at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. in New York City on November l, 1950 in honor of members of the Yugoslav Delegation to the Uiited Nations, : GUORG! SPANTA T-1 on November 22, 195C advised that GECRG? SPANTA, .an American citizen of Yugoslav. oxtraction, priop to the Tito-Comihform split, had been a member of he Yugoslav Section of the Communist Party, USA and in addition had been connected. with the following orgenizations: NY 105-2290 American Association for Reconstruction in Yugoslavia which organization, according to this informant was completely ommunist controlied. Yugoslav-American Home, According to the fnformant, SPANIA™jn 1946 was one of the founders of the Yugoslav-American Home. "Novi List". The informant stated that ‘SPANIA. was the treasurer of "Novi List" in 1952 and 1953. Club Sibenikz, The informant stated‘that SPANIA was one of the founders and is a past president of the social club Sibenix. This organization is composed of individuals born in or near the city of Sitemix in Dalmatia, Yugoslavia. The informant stated that the Club Sibenikis a completely pro-Tito organization, In addition, the informant stated that SPANIA maintains close contact with the officials of the Yugéslav’ Consulate General in New York City and attends all social fumetions held under the auspices of the Yugoslav. governiient agencies. » The informant further advised that SPANTA owns and operates the Express Trading Corporation, 2718 Oth Street, Long Island City, New York, a business firm which specializes in selling and shipping food packages te individuals in Yugoslavia. 2-6 advised on Harch 19, 1952 that MIL WALSSEV, Yugoo}av Gongul in few York City, prior to his departute for Yugoslavia on larch h, 1955’nad stated that SPAINTA controls several bundred Yugéslavs in the Yugoslav- American colony'in Astoria, Kew York and as a result, was considered to be an important contact by the officials of the Yugoslav Consulate General in New York City. The informant went on to say that SPANIA entertained no political sympathies with Tito's government, but continued his interest and cooperation with the Consulate for resons of personal prestige and personal financial profits. ACTIVITIGS, On February 4, 1954, T-7, of wilmown reliability, advised that the subject organization was 4 ¢o-sponsor of -7- WY 105-2290 & concert and social affair held on January 23, 1954. at the Yugoslav American Home in New York City. This affair was attended by the devarting Yugoslav Ambassador to the United States, VEADITAROPONIC and numerous personnel of the Yugoslav Consulate’General in New York City2 Ambassador POPOVEC had been recalled €o 2 Yugoslavia and, according to the informant, this was hia test publ eopearance in New York City. The informant stated that the net proceeds of this affair amounted to approximately 1,000 and were donated to "Novi List," In thig connection it is to be noted that ‘Novi List" issue of January 28, 1954 (page 11, colums 1 through 7) carried an article’ concerning the above nentioned concert and reflecting that ALEXA! ea RL as master of ceremonies and Captain ANTHONYARADOS Ras the principal speaker, Regarding Captain ANTHONY RADOS, T-1 has repeatedly advised in the past that this individual is a strong Tito sympethizer. The informant also stated that RADCS is a prominent member of the captioned organization, According to a Statement of @mership And Henagement published in "Novi List" on Cetober 7, 1952, pace hy column 6, ALEXANDR JURIGIis one of the owners of “Hova List." . 2-8, of unimown reliability, who was comnected with the administration of "Novi List" in 1951 and 1952, advised on October 27, 1952 that ALTXANDT? JURTC directs the editorial policy of "Novi List" and that he associates freely with the Yugoslav officials in this cotintry and is in complete sympathy with the Tito government. The aforementioned article in the January: 88, 1954. issue of "Novi List" further reflected that in his speech delivered at the concert at the Yugoslav-American Home on January 23, 1954 ALKANDER JURIGHpaia tribute to thé departing Yugoslav Ambassador VLADIMIR “OPOVIC stating that - 8- » \A HY 10542290 POPOVIC will be remembered by sll Yugoslav-Americans as an outstanding man and true “representative of the new Socialist Yugoslavia." JURLG| further said that POPOVIC during this three and one half years in Washington, D. C. had been extremely successful in cementing cordial relations betueen this country and Yugoslavia. In conclusion JURICH said that while the Yugoslavs in this’ country regrcttéd to see PO20VIC go, they réalized that the Yugoslav government wants to use his great ability in some other important cavacity for the benefit of the Yugoslav veople. 4mbassador POPOVIC in his reply stressed the~ spirit of friendship and cooperation existing between the United States of America and Yugoslavia, He stated that Yugoslav-Americans such as those sponsoring this affair deserve great credit in having established and deedened American-Yugoslev friendship. He urged the audience to preserve and expand the friendly relations existing between the two countries. Among those presenting toasts to the departing Gonsul LONCAR, was NIGKCLA TSLESMANIC, chairman of the subject organization and ALEXANDER JURIQg chairman of Novi List, Incorporatéd. LUNCAR#in a short speech expressed his thanks and gratitude for all assistance vendered him by the members of the Yugoslav colony during his stay in this country and he assured those present that even after his departure the doors of thé Yugoslav Consulate will always be open. ~. OG o6 Gt iAL WY 208-2290 T+1 who, although not a member of the _ subject orgeriization, 4s personally well acquainted with nany of its members and some officers, advised on: Harch 29, 195 that all efforts on the part of NIKOLA @pystiavic to rouse and intensify interest in the activities of this organization among the Yugoslav element have completely failed to bear fruit. The informant stated that, even the members of the orgenization continue to display an inaiffetent attitude tovards the club as demonstrated by vne fact that membership meetings are usually attended by not more than ten or twelve members and frequently only five or six.
