Content Analysis
Case: The Philippines a Century Hence

The Philippines a Century Hence is an essay or document written by Philippine National Hero

Jose Rizal to predict the future of the country within a hundred years. This work of his definitely

gave a sense of pleasure and sadness of the history. I was caught up by what he wrote that, “in

order to read the destiny of the people, it is necessary to open the book of its past. It needed a

proof logical perception and a firm argument. The Philippines was the place of battles where the

collision of cultures, compound of races or racial discrimination and wretched bloodshed was

done.

Analysis of the Content:

 He visualized our past clearly.

 The depth of his work and writings was an evidence of so much sorrow and grief.

 His mission for his country is to save and protect it from the terror and cruel Spaniards.

 He is a son of liberalism but he chose to be open-eyed through his ways of writing.

 He understand the pattern of the causes and effects in terms of our world with the use of

his researches on world history.

 Jose Rizal carefully become an observant of the present and past situation of the world

and forecast our future.

 Without any fear, he told the public of the plans of domination and colonization of other

countries.
 He was giving clues of hope to Filipinos that they will be free from the oppressive rule of

Spain.

 His urge to put freedom in the Philippines through decent and peaceful negotiations with

the Spaniards.

 Every sentence and ideas expressed discontent of the author from the rules and authority

of tyrants.

 There were patterns that can make the world change in his work.

 He presented a clear idea of how the Philippines will end up centuries later.

 He presented that the Philippines will try to cut the ties from its colonizers.

 He tried to read between the lines of his researches regarding the History of different

nations to come up with his recommendations of how the Philippines would look like or

end up in the future.

 He exposed the several issues that concern his homeland which is the abuse of human

rights most particularly lack of freedom of the press in Spanish Courts.

 He did not view Philippines as an independent country, he just wanted liberty from Spain

but not a total separation.

 This essay reminds of the wrong-doings of Spain that they did in the Philippines that

really affects the ancient traditions, cultures, recollections, and other ground of being a

Filipino.

 By formulation of present conditions and circumstances, this work of Rizal arrive with

the concept of the predicted future of his homeland.


 The Campaign they called “Propaganda Movement”, Philippines is in the oppression of

Spain, but by the use of word in form of speeches and pieces of his writings, his goal

which is to bring peacefulness to his homeland was done.

Context Analysis

Case: Oppressive rule of Spain

The colonization by the Spaniards which started centuries ago, Filipinos lost their traditions,
cultures, gave up their writings, their songs their poems and including their laws. Philippines was
reminded of the colonization of the tyrants that really affects them till now. Spain left a big scar
in the hearts of Filipinos.

The Philippines a Century Hence tells about the forecast of the future of the Philippines. Jose
Rizal is pursuing the occurrence of arousing of the Philippines and Filipinos. This document or
essay is a considerable request to avoid a chaotic and complicated separation between the
Philippines and Spain. He only expressed that Spain will let loose hold of his homeland and gave
hints to Filipinos that there will be other countries that will save and protect the Philippines from
the oppression of the Spaniards.

Content Analysis
Case: Dasalan at Toksohan

Dasalan at Toksohan is written by Marcelo Hilario Del Pilar y Gatmaitan during the Propaganda
Movement in the year of 1887-1888. His propaganda was believed very effective since he used
simple, yet strong and confident Tagalog that influenced people’s thoughts and ideas. Due to the
effectiveness of his propaganda, it was feared by the Spaniards. He was described by Governor-
General Ramon Blanco as “the most intelligent among Filipino Politicians, the true soul of the
independence movement who is very superior to Jose Rizal”.

Analysis of the Content:

 Marcelo H. Del Pilar was the most feared Filipino by the Spaniards
 Published in year 1887-1888, time of colonization of Spaniards.
 He was together with Mariano Ponce and Jose Rizal as a part of the triumvirate that led
the Propaganda Movement in Spain.
 He was the one who exposed the ills of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines up to its
last issue in 1896.
 It was written in Tagalog.
 Use of crude burlesque against the friars
 Parody of Prayers, a literature to use as a tool of rebellion to friars’ hypocrisy.
 He was one of the most influential intellectuals to fight against the oppression of
Spaniards.
Context Analysis

Case: Colonization of Spanish

The racism and hypocrisy of the Spaniard friars to those impoverished victims by their racial
discrimination in the Philippines. His battle against Spanish tyrants, with the use of his native
language, Tagalog, it enabled him to arouse the consciousness of the masses to the need for the
unity, sustained resistance and end of racial discrimination.

Marcelo H. Del Pilar also known as his pen name, “plaridel” is living in 19 th century in the
Philippines where the Spaniards started to oppressed and cause racial discrimination in Filipinos.
He used his native language, Tagalog to expose the abuses of the friars by parodying Spanish
creeds and prayers. His propaganda was effective that it feared the Spaniards.

The content of the Dasalan and Toksohan talks about crude to the friars and their religion. In the
parody of prayers, he explores and revealed how hypocrite the Spaniard friars are. He disclosed
the piousness of the friars to Filipinos and even cause racial discrimination and inequality
between them.

Case: Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa

Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa is a poem that is written by Andres Bonifacio which was published
in the first issue of the Kalayaan in year, 1896. This poem summed up to this, “The loss of
Nationalism is tantamount to the loss of the country’s as well and most importantly, the people’s
identity.”

Analysis of the Content:

 The poem was written on Tagalog


 It was published on March, 1896.
 He was able to prove his versatility in writing through this poem.
 The poem speaks about patriotism.
 It is composed of 28 stanzas wherein each stanza was written traditionally.
 Each have 4 verses, a rhyme and a measure of 12’s.
 This way of writing became popular during 19th century.
 It revolves around the conflict between the citizens of the Philippines and the Kingdom of
Spain.
Context Analysis

Case: Conflict between Spain

Injustice and Inequality between the citizens of the Philippine and the Kingdom of Spain became
a conflict. The colonization of Spain cause a lot of trouble in the Philippines making it more
complicated. Since Andres Bonifacio is much better known as fighter than a writer, it enabled
him to persuade Filipinos to fight for their right to liberty and equality.

Historical Context of the Case

 To urge Filipino citizens to fight for the Philippine Independence and to join crusade
 Speaks about patriotism
 Strong pieces to encourage the Filipinos to fight for their country as it states that the
greatest love is the love for one’s country.
 He also said that this love should be the reason to learn to seek for justice and
independence against the tyranny of the foreign invaders.
 He provoked the emotions as well as the intellects of the Filipinos for nationalism.

Andres Bonifacio, the Father of the Philippine Revolution, led the Filipinos in asserting and
protecting the right to liberty of Filipinos from the Spanish colonization. He wrote this poem to
open the eyes of Filipinos and awaken their hearts to protect and save their country from abused
and cruel Spaniards. Philippines is being tormented and maltreated, he only made a way to
express his perception and sentiments for the citizens of the Philippines to not step back, don’t
hesitate, fight, raise their words and speak for their rights.

Content Analysis

Case: Ang Kartilya ng Katipunan

Ang Kartilya ng Katipunan is written by Emilio Jacinto,only 19 years old who served as a
guiding philosophy for the members of the secret patriotic society. It was published in year of
2013 and adapt by the Katipunan as it is a code of conduct. The objectives are political, which is
the separation of the Philippines from Spain to secure independence of the colony.

Analysis of the Content:

 Wrote the ideas based on Right and light were the utmost importance.
 Its concept of virtuous living as lessons of self-reflection, rather than direct prescriptions.
 It asserted that it was internal, not the external qualifications.
 It has twelve “guiding principles”
 It has fourteen “teachings”
 Published on year 2013
 His own version of rules
 Guidebook for new members of organization
 To avoid people from having change of heart in choosing to join
 To ensure people understand that joining brotherhood is not easy, they need to di it
wholeheartedly.
Context Analysis

Case: Fight against Spaniards

Katipunan created a complex structure and a defined value system that would guide the
organization as a collection aspiring for single goal. The document was written by Emilio
Jacinto, despite his youth, Andres Bonifacio recognized the value and intellect of Jacinto that’s
why Bonifacio realized that Jacinto’s Kartilya is much better than the Decalogue that he wrote.

Historical Context of the Case

 Emilio Jacinto is also known as “Utak ng Katipunan”.


 His pen name is pinkian and dimasilaw.
 He is the advisor on fiscal matters and secretary to Andres Bonifacio.
 Continued the fight against Spaniards until the Americans even after death of Bonifacio

The document, Ang Kartilya ng Katipunan speaks about the importance of living a purpose-
driven life, the right thing and decision to do. It also tells what kindness really means. True act of
kindness for a Katipunero is in the love and service he render and lend to other individuals and
not the other way around. The equality and fairness is also mention in the document. It was
written for the reason to vision of the Katipunan to be morally right around Filipino and present a
concept of virtuous living for self-reflection.
