Module Description:

Criminal Law-I

This course introduces students to the general principles of criminal law and to the social,
political and moral context in which they have developed. The course will generally include
provisions of the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860, with other related enactments. This module will
provide students knowledge and understanding regarding criminal law, general explanations, Of
punishments, general exceptions, of abetment, criminal conspiracy, of offences against the state ,
of offences against the public tranquility, of false evidenced and offences against public justice.

c. Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

 Understand fundamental principles of criminal law .


 Define how crimes are categorized and types of punishments.
 become familiar with and understand the legal terminology used in the area of criminal
law .
 Demonstrate both verbal and written communication skills through problem solving in
different areas of criminal law.
 Articulate and discuss the structural framework of criminal statutory law
 Explain the classification of crimes and related offenses against the state .
 Explain the classification of crimes and related offenses against the public tranquility
 Explain the of false evidences and related offenses against the public justice describe
limitations on criminal law.
 Identify types of offenses
 Identify the various serious property crimes
 Identify hybrid crimes against the person and property
 Explain the difference between crimes against public order and property crimes
 Identify the common types of murder
 Identify the common types of assault and battery
 Analyze criminal acts, their elements, parties to offenses, and application.
 Express an increased awareness of the legal principles of criminal law and its application

d. Indicative Content:

 Discussion of importance of general principles in criminal law.


 Definition of the four important principles of criminal law;
I. Innocent until proven guilty,
II. Burden of proof,

III. Right to remain silent,


IV. Double Jeopardy.

 Definitions of legal terms used in criminal law.


 Issues of different kinds of punishments in different circumstances.
 Discuss the general exceptions regarding, act of judge, act of child under seven years of
age, act of person of unsound mind, act done in good faith for benefit of child, act causing
slight harm etc.
 Critical issues of abetment inside and outside of Pakistan and its punishments.
 Basic consideration regarding criminal conspiracy and its punishments.
 Challenges of offences against the state like collecting arm, sedition etc.
 Describe the offences against the public tranquility like unlawful assembly, rioting,
assaulting or obstructing public servant, affray and their punishments.
 Study of false and fabricating evidence, dishonestly making false claim, harboring
offender, impersonation of a juror or assessor etc.

e. Delivery:

A variety of teaching approaches are used, including lectures, seminars, case analysis, teamwork
and extensive use of the Internet for guided research.
