PIP0255 INTRODUCTION to PHYSICS

ELECTRIC CHARGE

1. What net electric charge would one million protons have?

2. A glass rod rubbed with silk acquires a charge of +8.0 × 10 10 C
a.) What is the charge on the silk?
b.) How many electrons have been transferred to the silk?
3. In walking across a carpet, a person acquires a net negative charge of
5.0C. How many excess electrons does the person have?

Answers:
1) +1.60 × 10 13 C
2a) 8.0 × 10 10 C b) 5.0 × 10 9 electrons
3) 3.1 × 10 13 electrons.

ELECTRIC FORCE.

1. An electron and a proton are separated by 10 cm. (k = 9.0 × 10 9 and q p = q e = 1.6 ×

10 19 )
a.) What is the magnitude of the force on the electron?
b.) What is the net force on the system?
2. Two charges originally separated by 30 cm are moved farther apart, until the force
between them has decreased by a factor of 10. How far apart are the charges then?
3. Two charges are attracted by a force of 25 N when separated by 20cm.What is the
force between the charges when the distance between them is 90 cm?
4. Three charges are located at the corners of an equilateral triangle, as depicted in
Figure 1. What are the magnitude and the direction of the force on q1?
(The distance between q1and q2, q 2 and q3, and q3 and q1 is 20 cm )

5. Four charges are located at the corners of a square as illustrated in Figure 2.

What are the magnitude and the direction of the force on
a) q2 and
b) q4? (The distance between each charge is 0.10 m)

q1 = 10 μC q2 = 10 μC
0.10 m

0.10 m 0.10 m

0.10 m
q4 = +5 μC q4 = +5 μC

Answer:
1a) 2.3 × 10 26 N b) zero because they are internal forces of the system.
2) 95 cm.
3) 1.2 N
4) 3.6 N, +ve x direction.
5a) F 2 = 96N, 39 below the +x axis.
b) F 4 = 61N, 84 above the x axis.
