SOALAN TUGASAN /ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

You have been invited to present (A) a paper, and (B) an oral presentation entitled Oral
Communication in English: Forms, Functions, and Strategies to a group of English
language instructors at a local college/university. Your oral presentation must be based on the
content of your paper that will be distributed earlier.

Do the following to complete this assignment:

(A) Use the following ideas in the introduction of your paper entitled “Oral
Communication in English: Forms, Functions, and Strategies in the Malaysian
Context”. Remember to use your own words as far as possible and add any other
relevant ideas.

Being able to communicate orally in English in a wide variety of social contexts is

one of the most important skills that we may have acquired or are in the process of
acquiring. We may use this way of communicating through language in several forms
depending upon our communication needs in particular situations. Intrapersonal
communication occurs more or less continuously within ourselves, and we use it to
think, to reason, to solve problems, etc. We also need to engage in interpersonal
communication, small group communication, and public communication, among
others, to satisfy our communication needs in a range of other situations/contexts.

Use the following headings to organise your paper:

1) Introduction
2) The Oral Communication Process
3) Interpersonal Communication
4) Small Group Communication
5) Public Communication
6) Conclusion

You may use suitable sub-headings to describe and explain concepts, functions,
processes, skills and strategies that are relevant, especially under headings (2)–(5)
above. Highlight the need to speak fluently in acceptable English and give examples
where appropriate.

Most importantly, relate your argument to the Malaysian Context and use example
from the Malaysian experience.
(20 marks)

2
(B) Prepare 12 -15 MS PowerPoint slides based on the content of your paper for a 10
minute talk titled “Oral Communication in English: Forms, Functions, and Strategies
in the Malaysian Context”.

1) Use phrases rather than whole sentences to write the text of your slides. Use
numbered/bulleted lists to organise and present main/supporting ideas on a
given slide.

2) Make your slides visually interesting by using suitable colours for the
background and embedded symbols and pictures as appropriate.
(10 marks)

[Total: 30 marks]
