“Medium” (material) and “Technique” (ways of handling

material).

These are the important components of form through

actual and hands-on activities. Medium and techniques
involve all our senses (sensing), which enable us to
understand or make sense of a work of art.

Medium and techniques are not neutral or accidental but

are part of the meaning of the work. They also determine, to
a very large extent, the ways in which we experience and
respond to the artwork. In contemporary art, medium has
become increasingly independent of conventions; artist
explore and invent new medium and techniques, thereby
expanding the range of artistic resources.

Medium defined as the material, or the substance out

of which a work is made. Through these materials, the artist
expresses and communicate feelings and ideas.

Local Materials Used in Creating Art

What Do I Need To Know

“Medium” (material) and “Technique” (ways of handling material).

These are the important components of form through actual and

(sensing), which enable us to understand or make sense of a work of art.

Medium and techniques are not neutral or accidental but are part of the
meaning of the work. They also determine, to a very large extent, the ways

Other local materials used in creating art

RAFFIA

A fiber extracted from unopened buri leaf in three

stages, it is loom woven into fabrics or used as wall
coverings, upholstery material, folding doors and
window hangings. Raffia fibre is widely used
throughout the world. It is used
in twine, rope, baskets, placemats, hats, shoes,
and textiles.
The fiber is produced from the membrane on the
underside of each individual frond leaf. The membrane
is taken off to create a long thin fiber which can be
dyed and woven as a textile into products ranging from hats to shoes to decorative
mats.

ABACA

Abaca belongs to Banana family

and its fiber has a natural luster with
colors ranging from pure white to
ivory and dark brown. Due to its
strength, it is a sought after product and is
the strongest of the natural fibers.[6] It is
used by the paper industry for such
specialty uses such as tea bags, banknotes[16] and decorative papers.[6] It can be used to
make handcrafts such as hats,[17] bags, carpets, clothing and furniture.

RATTAN

Rattan belongs to the palm family. There

are different types of rattan palms, such as
high or low climbers, single stemmed or
clustered rattan species. Many of the
properties of rattan that make it suitable for
furniture also make it a popular choice for
handicraft and art pieces. Uses include
rattan baskets, plant containers, and other
decorative works.
Due to its durability and resistance to
splintering, sections of rattan can be used
as canes, crooks for high-end umbrellas,
or staves for martial arts. Rattan sticks
70 cm (28 inches) long, called baston, are
used in Filipino martial arts, especially Arnis/Eskrima/Kali and for the striking
weapons in the Society for Creative Anachronism's full-contact "armoured
combat".[32][33]
PANDAN

Pandan is a tropical plant and

it is processed and transformed
into splints that are being used as
raw materials. Its leaves and fibers
are used widely in the Philippines for
thatching, ropes, and weaving various
traditional handicrafts like baskets and
mats.

BAKBAK

Bakbak is the outermost part

covering or leaf sheath of the abaca stalk.

17 | P a g e Writer/s : Aime L. Gulpan

School/Station: HNCHS
District: Hinatuan North
It is a flat thick durable sheath as twine or braided. The strong brown
fiber used to make furniture.

COIR

Coir is the fibrous materials surrounding

the fruit of the coconut tree and used in
products such as floor mats, doormats,
brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous
material found between hard, internal shell
and the outer coat of a coconut. Other uses of
brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in
upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture.
White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is
used for making finer brushes, string, rope and
fishing nets.

TIKOG

Tikog belongs to sea grasses. It is

a native reed plant used as a raw
material for mat weaving. The reed
plant thrives well in densely forested
areas and grows even in the rice
fields. Fully grown tikog reaches up
to three meters. Its width ranges
from the finest at 1.5 to 6 millimetres
(0.059 to 0.236 in). The weavers of
Basey use the finer tikog.

The tikog stems are first cut to the

desired length and then dried under the sun. Some of these stems are dyed
with the desired color and again dried. Then these are flattened just before
they are woven into mats.

TIKIW

A large, erect and aquatic or marshy

herb plant. It is found in Central Luzon to
Mindanao. It abounds in fresh water swaps
and in newly opened rice land at low
altitudes.
