WELCOME TO SPORTING NEWS' 2009 FANTASY FOOTBALL DRAFT KIT

Imagine for a minute your life without fantasy football.

There'd be no smack talk with your buddies. No celebratory dances after that garbage-time Kevin Smith touchdown. And you couldn't make fun of the Al Davis-like owner in your league who was "gutsy" enough to take Darrius Heyward-Bey in the 12th round.

Then, when co-workers gathered around the water cooler on Monday morning to complain about losing a game by two-tenths of a point thanks to a replay reversal, you'll have nothing to offer about your weekend besides how you really hated that movie your significant other dragged you to see.

Scary, huh? But trust me, that's "exactly" what would happen if you let a season pass by without fantasy football.

It doesn't have to be that way. Even if you haven't had much time to prepare for a draft, you don't need to sit on the sideline. That's where Sporting News' 2009 Fantasy Football Draft Kit comes into play.

Available in different sizes, you can print out however much or however little of the kit you need to take to your draft.

If you just want a quick Top 200 list along with schedules, depth charts and an injury report, use our basic version. But if you want more, we have a super-sized version for you, too.

Sporting News' Fantasy Source editors have been combing through scouting reports and analyzing stats to help you get ready for your draft. We've done the heavy lifting for you so all you have to do is log in, hit the print button and dash off to the pub or chat room to take part in the fun of draft day.

In addition to rankings, strength-of-schedule ratings, depth charts and injury reports, our draft kit has the latest player updates, stat projections, bye weeks, dollar values and more. Don't miss out on the Draft Tracker, either, so you can chart the draft needs of other owners in your league.

See, that was easy. Problem solved. Now, you're in the game and will be part of the conversation. And the best part is you won't have to be locked in your basement for hours, days, weeks studying stats.

Enjoy the draft kit and good luck this season!

LATEST EXPERT COLUMN - Point taken

By Brad Pinkerton Sporting News

Wouldn't it be nice if we got points for doing the little things in life? Showing up for work on time would earn you one point. Remembering your significant other's birthday? Another point for you.

Essentially that's the concept behind points-per-reception (PPR) leagues. This simple bonus system rewards running backs and receivers by giving them a set amount of points (usually one) every time they haul in a pass. That seems fair since points typically are deducted for mistakes (i.e. fumbles, interceptions).

The extra points lead to higher-scoring weeks and more interesting matchups. But they also change the values of certain players relative to leagues that don't reward receptions. PPR leaguers may be missing the point(s) if they're drafting with rankings based on a standard scoring system, as most are.

To see who is more (or less) valuable in PPR leagues, let's compare final 2008 rankings based on fantasy points per game in a standard scoring format and one that rewards receptions. That will show which players had the biggest gains (or losses) last season based on the scoring.

The standard format is 0.1 point for every yard gained (rushing plus receiving) and six points per touchdown (rushing and receiving only); the PPR format gives each player one point per reception. Then, players' total points in both formats are divided by the number of games played and ranked accordingly. Fluke plays like fumbles lost and return touchdowns were omitted to keep the comparisons simple.

Enough with the math lesson. Let's take a look at the running backs first:

Player PPR rank Std. rank PPR +/- Brian Westbrook, PHI 1 5 +4 Steven Jackson, STL 2 3 +1 Matt Forte, CHI 3 7 +4 DeAngelo Williams, CAR 4 1 -3 Maurice Jones-Drew, JAX 5 12 +7 Michael Turner, ATL 6 2 -4 Thomas Jones, NYJ 7 8 +1 LaDainian Tomlinson, SD 8 10 +2 Steve Slaton, HOU 9 9 0 Reggie Bush, NO 10 17 +7 Adrian Peterson, MIN 11 6 -5 Chris Johnson, TEN 12 13 +1 Frank Gore, SF 13 14 +1 Brandon Jacobs, NYG 14 4 -10 Clinton Portis, WAS 15 11 -4 Marion Barber, DAL 16 16 0 Marshawn Lynch, BUF 17 15 -2 Kevin Smith, DET 18 19 +1 Ronnie Brown, MIA 19 18 -1 Pierre Thomas, NO 20 20 0 Kevin Faulk, NE 21 32 +11 Dominic Rhodes, IND 22 31 +9 Derrick Ward, TB 23 29 +6 Joseph Addai, IND 24 27 +3 Le'Ron McClain, BAL 25 22 -3 Willis McGahee, BAL 26 28 +2

Larry Johnson, KC 27 23 -4 Warrick Dunn, FA 28 35 +7 Sammy Morris, NE 29 25 -4 Ryan Grant, GB 30 24 -6 Leon Washington, NYJ 31 36 +5 LenDale White, TEN 32 21 -11 Cedric Benson, CIN 33 34 +1 Mewelde Moore, PIT 34 37 +3 Jamal Lewis, CLE 35 33 -2 Willie Parker, PIT 36 26 -10 Darren McFadden, OAK 37 38 +1 Chester Taylor, MIN 38 43 +5 Tim Hightower, ARI 39 39 0 Jonathan Stewart, CAR 40 30 -10

In PPR leagues, Brian Westbrook (+4) jumps to No. 1. This is based on fantasy points per game, and you can't expect the fragile Westbrook to stay healthy for 16 games. Even though you shouldn't draft Westbrook first overall, he certainly has increased value in PPR leagues.

Matt Forte (+4), who led all backs with 63 receptions, makes a great case to be the No. 1 pick in PPR leagues as Chicago's workhorse. Maurice Jones-Drew (+7) saw the biggest jump among the elite backs, while Reggie Bush also leapt up seven spots. Kevin Faulk (+11) saw the biggest increase, confirming his flex-play appeal in PPR leagues.

Notice that elite backs Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner lost four spots each in the PPR format. That's not a significant enough drop to bump them out of the top three on draft boards, however. PPR leaguers should be more concerned about the bruising backs who are used more as bulldozers than pass catchers. LenDale White (-11), Brandon Jacobs (-10) and Jonathan Stewart (-10) all saw drastic drops in their scoring ranks in the PPR format, so think twice before drafting any of these guys if there is a comparable pass-catching option available.

The difference between the formats among running backs and wide receivers, as you'll see, shouldn't cause much shuffle among the elite. It's the mid-tier players who typically see the biggest rise or fall in value. That becomes increasingly clear when examining the wide receivers:

Player PPR rank Std. rank PPR +/- Anquan Boldin, ARI 1 1 0 Andre Johnson, HOU 2 4 +2 Larry Fitzgerald, ARI 3 2 -1 Steve Smith, CAR 4 3 -1 Brandon Marshall, DEN 5 8 +3 Calvin Johnson, DET 6 5 -1 Roddy White, ATL 7 7 0 Greg Jennings, GB 8 6 -2 Antonio Bryant, TB 9 9 0 Wes Welker, NE 10 21 +11 Eddie Royal, DEN 11 15 +4 Terrell Owens, BUF 12 10 -2 Randy Moss, NE 13 11 -2 Reggie Wayne, IND 14 14 0 Lance Moore, NO 15 13 -2 Dwayne Bowe, KC 16 17 +1 Hines Ward, PIT 17 16 -1

Santana Moss, WAS 18 18 0 T.J. Houshmandzadeh, CIN 19 27 +8 Vincent Jackson, SD 20 12 -8 Derrick Mason, BAL 21 23 +2 Donald Driver, GB 22 24 +2 Matt Jones, FA 23 33 +10 Kevin Walter, HOU 24 20 -4 Laveranues Coles, CIN 25 25 0 Steve Breaston, ARI 26 31 +5 Bernard Berrian, MIN 27 19 -8 Jerricho Cotchery, NYJ 28 34 +6 Muhsin Muhammad, CAR 29 28 -1 Isaac Bruce, SF 30 26 -4 Lee Evans, BUF 31 29 -2 DeSean Jackson, PHI 32 32 0 Justin Gage, TEN 33 22 -11 Santonio Holmes, PIT 34 30 -4 Ted Ginn Jr., MIA 35 35 0 Marvin Harrison, FA 36 40 +4 Torry Holt, FA 37 41 +4 Donnie Avery, STL 38 37 -1 Chad Johnson, CIN 39 43 +4 Braylon Edwards, CLE 40 36 -4

There are a few small shifts among the top receivers, thanks to receptions, but the most movement occurs in the lower ranks. A player like Matt Jones, who logged a lot of catches without a lot of scores or yardage, will see a big increase in value in PPR leagues. Conversely, someone like Justin Gage, who relies on a few big plays for most of his points, will see a big drop in value when receptions are factored in.

We already knew Wes Welker (+11) carries more value in PPR leagues, but it's important not to overvalue that. The chart shows Welker would have outscored teammate Randy Moss last season in PPR leagues, but let's be honest -- you're not drafting Welker before Moss in any format.

Instead of using these charts as PPR rankings, use them as tiebreakers between two players who match up on paper. If you go with the option that can get you consistent reception points without needing big yardage totals or touchdowns, you'll have the advantage.

And if you take time to customize the formula to fit your league, give yourself a point.
