13
DISCUSSION:

a FOLDER on our computers can help organize things. The files

that we already have can be moved to the folders that we
created. We can also save the apps that we use in the folders.

Let us create a folder on the desktop by doing these steps:

1. Using the mouse, right-click any part of the desktop. We might need to
minimize some windows to see our
desktop.

2. Hover the mouse on the word new found in

the menu.

3. Select Folder from the menu.

a folder icon will appear on the desktop.

4. Let us name the folder we created My-New-Folder. Right-

click the folder icon, and select Rename. Type the name of
the folder, and press Enter.

14
Managing Folder
Another way to organize or manage our files is to create a
subfolder. We can create a folder named school. Then inside this
folder, we can create different subject folders where we can save our
files.

Let us create subfolders by doing these steps:

1. Open My-New-Folder.
2. Right-click the folder, and create a new folder.

3. Name the folders as the subjects we have in school.(example: Filipino, Math,

Science, Reading, etc..) Our folders should look like this.

15
4. If we want to rename a folder, simple right-click the folder, hover on the
Rename option, and click.
5. If we want to delete folder, select the folder then press the Delete Key. This
will delete the folder we selected.
ENRICHMENT:
Activity 3
Arrange the Steps. Number the steps from 1 to 4. Write the numbers on the lines.

Lesson 4
Naming and Managing Files

In this lesson you will learn how to

differentiate good file names from bad
file names. Also you will able to learn
how to sort, organize, and manage your
files in your computers.

PRE TEST:
Name the characters. Go around your house. Ask someone if they know the
names of these special characters. Write the names on the lines.

1. & ________________________________
2. ! ________________________________
3. @ ________________________________
4. # ________________________________
5. $ ________________________________
6. % ________________________________
7. ^ ________________________________
8. {} ________________________________
9. : ________________________________
10. * ________________________________

17
DISCUSSION:

When we are working on our computers, we will need to save our file.
When we need to look for it again, we should be able to identify it from
the other files we already have.
Let us remember that there are good file names and bad life names.
Here are some ways to create good file names:
1. Make file names specific. A good file name should tell us what the file is about.
Try to be specific as possible.
2. Do not make file names too long. Long file names do not always work well with
all types of software.
3. Avoid using special characters. Some special characters are:
~!@#$%^&*(){}:”<>
4. Do not use spaces. Use underscore, dashes, no spaces, or camel case instead.
Character Example
Underscore File_name
Dashes File-name
No Spaces Filename
Camel Case FileName

18
Managing Files
Was there a time when you were looking for your pair
of sock and could not find it anywhere? The same can
happen on our computers. When our files are
disorganized, we waste time looking for the things.

To organize our computers, we need to manage our folders and files properly.
FILE MANAGEMENT is the sorting, naming, and maintaining of computer files. It
aims to organize, label, and classify computer data to remove unwanted files.
Let us start by renaming our old folder My-New-Folder found in the past lesson.
Rename that folder using your first name.

We already know how to make good file names. Let us now learn
how to put them in the correct folder.

It is good to know right at the start

where the file belongs. Start Microsoft
Word, and open a blank document.

19
Type the sentence “Today, I will learn how to use the Save As option in the
FileMenu”..

Now we have our sample documents, let us save it in one of our folders..
1. Click the File menu.
2. Select the Save As option. Select Desktop.

20
We will be directed to the Save As dialog box.

Another method of managing Files well is naming it

directly in the folder.
1. Open the folder with your file name.
2. Look for that folder on the desktop, and
double-click to open the folder.
3. Look for Practice-01 file.
4. Right-click the file, and choose the Rename
option from the choices.
ENRICHMENT:
Activity 5
Give Short Answer. Write short answers in the boxes.
1. What is file management?

2. What are the two (2) ways of renaming files?

3. Where can we find the Save As option?

21
Lesson 5
Navigating through This PC and Desktop Folders

In this lesson you will learn how to be

efficient in file management by using This
PC.

What do we do when we fix our school papers?

That is right! We put them in envelopes, folders,
and boxes. We also write our names on those
containers. Let us apply the same principle when
we organize our files on the computer.

PRE TEST:

What ICON is this???

________________________________

22
DISCUSSION:
If we are using Windows 10 for the first time, we will notice that the usual icons of
Window are not shown. To make these icons appear, right-click on the desktop and
select Personalize.

This action activate the Settings dialog box of our computers

Check the boxes labeled Computer, User’s Files, and Recycle Bin. These are the
icons that are found in the earlier versions of windows.

23
Let us now look at This PC. It gives us a quick look of everything inside our PC.
Click the This PC icon to open the content.

This PC replaced My Computer in older version of Windows.

If we open This PC, all available drives found on our computers will be
shown. It will also show where our files are located.

DOCUMENT FOLDER- is the default location of all files we created when

we save our work in Windows. We can practice good file management
techniques in two (2) ways:
1. We can san use the default My Documents folder.
2. We can choose to create folders on our desktop to organize our
files.

24
ENRICHMENT:
Activity 6
Arrange the Steps. Number the step from 1-6. Write the numbers on the lines.
_____ Remove duplicates.
_____ Paste the files into the destination folder.
_____ Identify the files create the folders.
_____ Open the destination folder.
_____ Select the files to be moved.
_____ Copy the files from the source folder.
Activity 7
Performance Task: Manage Files in This PC.
1. Open This PC.
2. Move one (1) subfolder into desktop.
3. Ask the Teachers to browse through the files in the folders.
4. Select which files is good to be moved to the desktop.
5. Make sure to remove the duplicate.

GENERALIZATION:

We humans created the computer. Computers do what we tell them to do. If we

program computers well, they function well. Computers are only as good as what we
tell them to do.
We learned how to make Windows work for us. We looked at the correct ways to take
care of ourselves and our computers. We learn to create folders and manage our files.
We Organized!
