One of the oldest civilisations in the world began by its banks. The ancient
Egyptians lived and farmed along the river Nile. It provided water, fish and
excellent soil for growing food as well as transportation. The river was the
quickest and easiest way to travel from place to place. Reeds called
papyrus grew alongside of the Nile. The Egyptians made paper and boats
from these reeds.
