DISCUSSION

a) As we can see at the experiment data, when the thermal load increased the COPref
decreased. COP or the coefficient of performance is basically the ratio of heat extracted
at the cold and the effort needed. To make the COP increase, the thermal energy needs to
show high value compare to the work done.

b) The cooling medium used in experiment A is water for the condenser while using air as
the cooling medium in experiment B. For the evaporator, air is use through out the both
experiments. The COP value will be affected by the cooling medium used. As the result
for the both experiment, experiment A shows a bigger value than the experiment B. The
difference between the 2 experiment is because the condenser in experiment A using the
water flow to cool the refrigerant. This shows that, water is a better cooling medium than
rather using air. It is because the rate of heat removal is better in the system. Plus, water
also has the large heat potential and also have high thermal conductivity.

c) The meaning of load in this experiment is actually the amount of heat needed to be
extract by the refrigeration system. It is important to know so that it can maintain the
environment temperature. The loads can be divide into two which is the heating and
cooling.

As example of the application is the domestic fridge used in food industries. Domestic
fridge mainly used to store food such as meat, vegetables and many more to make sure
that the food stays fresh when it will be use later. The heat released by the food will be
absorbed by the evaporator. Then the heat will go through the cooling process by the
refrigerant and the cold air from the evaporator will blow inside the fridge.

As in the room space, the loads is refer to the environment, human, electrical appliances
such as computer, phones which will produce heat to the surroundings. So in order to
absorbed the heat from the room, air-conditioning system will do the job to release the
heat to the outside of the room.

In a large scale industries, they also use the industrial refrigeration. Industrial
refrigeration is used to remove heat from large-scale processes as in Chemical and
Petrochemical Industries. The type of process that is used to make certain product are
called distillation, crystallizations and condensation which are the process that required
the removal of heat. Huge cooling plants are used in their processes. Compression cycles
and absorption cycles are one of the ways to cool down the hot stream after the heat has
been released in other operations.

CONCLUSION

As conclusion, the objective of this experiment is achieved which is to find the difference
of output coefficient of performance (COP) of vapour compression refrigerant system at different
cooling load. By the results, we can analysed that the COPref load is high in the water cooling
medium which is in experiment A. Basically, the coefficient of performance will drop when the
energy needed to absorb the heat is high. This is due to the flow of fluid in the unit system. As
we can see in the result, it can be concluded that using water as the cooling medium will improve
the performance rather than using the air as the cooling medium. By using water as the cooling
medium, it can improve the COP and water is better in conducting higher thermal than air
cooling. With this experiment, it can help to choose better cooling medium in HVAC design in
industry. Some improvements can be done to lower the error in the experiments which is to
improve the effects of surrounding temperature that will give effect to the refrigerant system.
